Check out this game for Zach Wilson--this was a tough defense! My favorite part was that cross body throw, that's a special type of throw. The part of his game that I love, that we currently lack with Sam, is his composure under the gun (see the near game winning drive at the end) and his ability to perform even when he's getting beat up in the pocket. If it wasn't for TL--this kid is the talk of the draft. His numbers back it up to.
Always love to dialogue with you, NC. I think we agree on the larger points. I trust experts in the industry over my own opinion--especially those with a solid track record like our current front office. Furthermore, if we get a good coach in here, that's another set of trustworthy eyes to make decisions. If they think the benefits outweigh the risks with Wilson, I would be OK getting him at 2. It is comforting to know that there are a few intriguing QB options this year and at the worst we will have the pick out of the majority of them (except the generational one ha). One way to think about it is that there is going to be at least one good QB out of (Field, Wilson, Jones, Lance, Trask)--all of them are productive college prospects with potential....it would be ridiculous to assume everyone is a bust except Lawrence. That's just being a pessimist. So I agree in the sense we need to do some mining for the diamond here and find out who that other star is going to be. TL makes things easy.... We will have a lot of ammo to build around Wilson, if he's the guy. I'm predicting a 3 and 5 for Sam....that's my guess.
I don't know... I like Wilson. But I like Darnold too. I'm just not seeing anything on that video that makes me go "oh yeah we definately gotta use the #2 pick on him" And I'm also not seeing anything in that video that Darnold can't do. And even if you want to say he'd develop into a slightly better NFL player than Darnold lets actually assume that is a true fact. Is that difference going to be enough to pay the #2 pick in the draft for? Instead of an impact offensive player like Sewell, Chase, or perhaps even a trade down for more talent your going to invest your prime resources into whatever "may" be the slight difference in QBs? We'll find out in 4 months but I'm going to be pretty surprised if thats the way JD decides to go. Despite some of the absolutely wild stuff being posted on this message board referring to Darnold in the past tense, worst QB in NFL etc. We'll see. Especially if Darnold plays decent to well in the last two games we're not drafting Fields or Wilson is my prediction. Now if our Quarterback was Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh McCown? Holy shit yes.... sign me up for Zach Wilson. Take the chance. But you've got a guy who was just recently a higher rated prospect, has conducted himself very well (says me) on and off the field, and has been given an appalling lack of support on (and off) it. Get him some freaking help.
He threw the ball just over 60 yards in the air. Also, I think he will be the guy the Jets pick if they pick 2nd. The reason is his drive to improve; he worked hard and improved his skills dramatically between seasons. JD will really like that. JD won't be picking any guys that never watch their own tape!
Darnold was a good prospect, and so is Wilson, no argument here. Not all good prospects pan out. The difference, and that difference is enormous and is the key, is that Sam was given 3 years to develop in NFL, and he developed into the worst starting QB in NFL. With Zach we just don't know, he may become a star FQB in 2-3 years. Just because Sam was a good prospect and didn't develop doesn't mean we now have to pass on all others, who may.
After losing the closest thing to a sure thing QB in a long time in TL I am having a difficult time wanting to take another QB with a high risk of failure. I am interested to see how the 4 other potential 1st rd QBs rise and fall between now and April. But at this point I would rather take a blue chip player with the 2 pick such as Sewell, Chase, Adams or trade down. Sign a veteran QB to compete with Sam and build a team. Draft a QB in a year or two once we have a better offensive foundation.
I hear you, losing a sure thing prospect really blows in a ways that are hard to describe. However, if we do indeed end up losing him (75% chance of that), we need to move on as if he doesn't exist and basically forget we ever had a shot at him. We still have a very high pick in the draft and we still need a FQB. Staying with Sam to me is just not a good option when there is a guy like Zach available. Is there a high risk of failure? I suppose, perhaps as high as we had with Sam. But there is also reasonably high chance he succeeds. In the Sam's draft top 10, I would say Baker and Allen succeeded, while Sam and Rosen failed. I think we have no choice but to take that risk. If we wait for a guy like Trevor coming out to align with us getting a #1 pick, if it does not happen this year, we might have to wait forever. And in a year or two we may not have a high pick at all if new coach is any good. The only way I see us not taking a QB with #2 is if JD feels Jones, Lance, Fields, Wilson, Trask are all kind of similar. Then he might trade down where can get one with a later pick. But my gut tells me #2 will be a QB.
I agree with your logic but I am not over breaking up with TL yet. It will take time to fall in love with a new QB again. But, until that happens I am in the draft Sewell, Chase, Adams or trade back camp.
This kid has a live arm and can be accurate but he is nowhere close to pro ready. No where close!!! His level of competition and his own teammates will never be professional football players that make an impact. He needs 1-2 years behind a vet to have a chance. Putting him in year one would ruin him more that Sam. Hard Pass.
If anything, this is a compliment. He's looked near flawless throwing to complete nobodies. Not every successful quarterback goes to a top level school--and Wilson took BYU as high as the AP top 10. That's pretty damn impressive if you ask me. I'm more concerned about the guys who never get challenged because they go to the top schools with NFL talent (cough, cough, Justin Fields). He needs some work, but he's definitely a good prospect. Mahomes' and Allen's fundamentals were complete shit when they came out (so much so that I completely wrote off both pre-draft). Even now, they're still not great, but they have such incredible arm talent that it makes up for it. That's kinda what you bank on here with Wilson. I haven't seen a Jets QB with his arm since...ever?
I know it's hard, that long blond hair, impressive tall physique. I hope you will be back together next Sunday night!
Darnold had 19 tds - 13 ints in 2019 and was thought to be poised for a breakout season. JD said after the season to Darnold’s parents that he let them down + promised them he would get him more support / protection... Didn’t happen. The opportunity to draft a HOF player in Sewell will help supplant JD as a good talent evaluator + ensure future years of job security. Lawrence is one thing, but these other guys all have question marks (who is the #2?)... This is not even a tough one to see/call imo. I called the OT pick last year (did not think Becton would be there). I wrote about + predicted James Morgan would be on the Jets radar to which many said no way that happens... At this point (things can change), I’ve never been more confident in a Jets pick than Sewell...
You can't simply brush aside the fact that he was poised to have a breakout season and it just didn't happen because of JD. JD completely revamped OL, and gave Sam protection he promised. We need to recognize a fact Sam just didn't deliver. You can't take the guy who was the worst starting QB in NFL last year, and was poised to have a breakout year, then he regresses drastically even from that, where his washed up old back-up performed way better than him, and not hold him responsible. At this point, Sam's best fit/value is to come somewhere as back-up, where he would still have some chance in case starter got injured to show he improved. Perhaps a team like Stealers? Maybe even become a starting QB at some point. But we cannot bring Sam back as a starter now after what he did this year, that would just be irresponsible. And if we draft a young QB with first or second pick, then this would give us 3 young QBs on the roster, which I think is too many. I for one would be greatly disappointed if we bring back Sam, Morgan, and Flacco as our QBs, unless maybe JD is very high on Morgan. Imagine if we pass on Zach because of Morgan, and Zach becomes Mahomes.
I'm a big Wilson fan, and after Zace called him to out attention, I've been on his bandwagon ever since, so I'd love to see Douglas take him. That said, I think throwing him in right away as the starter would be a major mistake, akin to what was done to Darnold. I think he needs a season of sitting on the bench and learning and getting used to the speed and complexity of the pro game. Hell, even Mahomes needed that, and I was also a huge booster of him. So with that, my best case is that Darnold shows over these next two games that he can be good enough to win and can be the starter for at least next season. Let him and Wilson compete for the job and if it's at least close let Sam start in the beginning until Wilson comes up to speed. Of course if Darnold reverts to 'Bad Sam' these next two games, then yes, unload him and look to find an affordable vet to take that role next year. But if you go back and watch tape of Darnold in college and then look at what he's been able to do here despite massive obstacles, and see what he did last week against a good defense, I don't see why anyone wants to just toss him aside.
