Mahomes had & has extremely rare spatial awareness & instincts to go along w that crazy arm strength. He’d make those last second dimes down the seam or EZ w unbelievable command & precision. Wilson has a similar game but he lacks the skill level referred to above. He’ll make those same last ditch throws but alot of his get picked in the NFL. While Wilson has more carries than Mahomes did in college,I think PM is a much better athlete too.Wilson isnt a bad athlete or anything but likely an average ball carrier at NFL level.
Have you seen the stat about Darnold being the worst QB in the NFL from a clean pocket? I really don't think throwing more resources at OL is the move. Our OL can and should be improved but it's not this major disaster that's preventing us from having good QB play. Our QB is preventing us from having good QB play.
I'm really starting to like Wilson, but one thing he does that drives me nuts is when he turns his back on the LOS in spinning to move left. It's totally unnecessary. He loses sight of his receivers and where the pressure is. In the play at around 1:30, he almost runs himself into a sack doing that. When he turns his back and spins, it's a tell that he's going left, he has no option to roll right. IMO he needs to stop doing that, drop straight back so that he can keep seeing the field, see where the pressure is and can move left or right. That will prevent some sacks, possibly strip sacks, and will enable him to run in either direction to escape pressure, and run to pick up yardage when his receivers are blanketed.
Clemson isn't loaded at every position. Sorry, but that's silly. BYU has a very good OL, maybe better than Clemson's. His WRs look as good as Clemson's do this year. It may have been an anomaly due to lack of preparation time and fatigue, but against Coastal Carolina he was not great at reading defenses or going through his progressions. He was staring receivers down the whole game. I need to see a lot more game film and not just highlights to determine if I agree with you on his ability to read defenses and go through his progressions. Hopefully, you're spot on. I want to agree with you, certainly. I do love his accuracy, ball placement, and throwing motion, quick, smooth release, and arm strength.
Yes, the Jets fucked us, but we knew (or should have known) that Gase was going to keep trying to win and that the players were going to keep fighting for wins. In terms of his receivers having to make circus catches, yes, on a few, but certainly not on "Almost every play." One can also look at it that he put the ball where only the WR could make a play on the ball, and the DB would have no chance to break it up or intercept. I have some question as to whether he has the arm strength to be able to fit balls in tight windows in the NFL against superior DBs like he has done at BYU, but he looks like a far superior prospect than any other QB in this draft not named Trevor Lawrence, and like a far superior prospect to Sam imo.
I’m kinda torn on him...he is like a poor man’s Pat Mahomes, which could be very good or a complete bust in the NFL. I think he has the same kind of tools but to a much lesser degree. I’m not sure if it’s enough to be successful against NFL defenses because it’s a risky type of playing style. I personally like Fields better as of now, which I know is an unpopular take on here (but not really on the national scope). He is atleast an elite level athlete with the tools needed. You will just need a great coaching staff and system to get it out of him
How tall are Drew Brees (6'0"), Russell Wilson (5'11"), Kyler Murray (5'10"), Lamar Jackson (6'2"), Baker Mayfield (6'1" if that), Tua Tagovailoa (6'0") ? Their lack of height doesn't seem to hurt their play. I'm not worried about his lack of height. Actually, one of the things that concerns me about Lawrence is his height.
I may wind up agreeing with you, but not at the moment. Even if he's not, if Douglas likes him, he's going to have to take him at the #2 spot or some other team will grab him. He better not get greedy and try to trade down and then take him. Someone will leap frog us and take him. He's already better than Sam.
GTFO with that crazy shit. And Brees isn't hunched over. His legs are straight and body are straight and his chest high. If anything, Wilson isn't standing up straight as one of his knees is bent. If you don't like him fine, but don't make up shit about him.
He’s 6’3. I saw a picture of him and Drew Brees, he’s a good 2-1/2 to 3 inches taller than Brees.....and that’s counting Brees’ forehead.
He doesn't seem to have lost any strength in throwing the ball due to the torn labrum, but having experienced one of those myself, and after seeing how it affected Chad, it's definitely a concern. I would hope that he will adjust his mechanics to throwing mostly overhead rather than 3/4, as that will put less strain on his shoulder. His height doesn't concern me at all. In another post in this thread I listed some pretty darned good QBs in the NFL who are 6'2" and shorter and their lack of height doesn't seem to hurt them. He can put on some more weight and probably won't lose much speed or mobility.
Charlie Campbell is nuts if he thinks Wilson is dropping that far imo. I haven't ever see him be right about any prospect. I don't know how he still is in business.
QFT From what I know about JD I believe he will think this way also. People who think we are going to use a first rounder on a QB this draft are probably wrong.
He probably is only a top 30 talent, but you know as well as I that QBs are over drafted due to the lack of them. I truly believe that if Douglas likes Wilson he's probably going to have to take him at #2. If he tries to trade down and then take Wilson, I think some other team will leap frog us and take him. If we don't wind up with Lawrence, at least right now, I want Wilson. He looks much better than Fields to me. I need to see Lance and Trask play, but I definitely think we need to move on from Sam, and draft one of those 5 QBs. Outside of Lawrence, who do you want the Jets to draft?
Sorry, but I totally disagree. Sam has never had the accuracy, ball placement, moxie, or competitive spirit and toughness that Wilson has. Their only similarities imo are being able to extend plays and be accurate throwing on the move. Wilson looks light years better to me than Sam ever did. EDIT: I stand corrected. I just watched that highlight video, and had totally forgotten how good Sam looked. I had totally forgotten how aggressive he was running the ball and how confident he looked. His throws were also stronger and more accurate than I remembered. It's sad to contrast those runs with the TD run that Sam had this season. He stumbled and bumbled, and looked hesitant, not strong and confident. It was almost as if he was afraid he was going to get hit on that run. If Sam isn't ruined and can return to that level, I wouldn't mind his remaining our QB, but there are no guarantees. I truly think he may have to go elsewhere, and sit for a while to regain the magic he had. For certain, whoever coaches him should not try to make a pocket QB out of him. They need to let him run and do his thing. That will keep him loose and more confident.
Relax, man. I have no reason to make shit up. I don't have to like/dislike him to give my opinion on what I think his height is. Looks like a true 6'2 to me. Regardless his height's not going to be the deciding factor on him either way.
I think you misread it. I was talking about Jets Sam looking like Sam in his USC highlight video that was posted, not comparing him to Wilson at all. I don't know enough about Wilson to do so.
with all due respect, NCJetsfan, and I do mean that bc I like you as a poster and don't really want to get into a heated message board argument with you, but with all due respect....come on, dude. You know exactly what I meant when I said that "Clemson was loaded at every position" and you know it is 100% accurate and true. There are literally two schools dominating college football right now, which have been dominating it for the past several seasons. There is Bama and Clemson and then there is EVERYBODY ELSE. You know it...and I know it. These two schools DOMINATE in recruiting, which in college football (unless u have a total numbskull coach like Ron Zook or Larry Coker) leads to dominating on the football field. There is NOT ONE SINGLE POSITION GROUP where BYU has more talent than Clemson. Not one. Except at QB bc Wilson is more talented than TL. That is it. Every other position group has more blue chip talent in Clemson's favor and it isnt even close. You can't argue that : A-TL is surrounded by a ton more talent than Wilson is and B-That the talent gap between Clemson and the schools they play (UNC? Miami? FSU? please....lol) is MUCH WIDER than the talent gap that exists between BYU and the schools they play. That is what I was saying and you KNOW that is true, so come on dude. Suggesting otherwise is not only "silly", but inherently absurd. And you are better than that.
I totally agree with all of this. I wondered about the interceptions thing in the NFL. IMO he seems to have the same type of aggressiveness as Mahomes, and maybe the same accurate ball placement, but not the same strong arm that is able to zip throws in as Mahomes. I think Wilson will have an adjustment period (and that's if he learns) in the NFL. He'll need to learn his limitations, that he doesn't have Patrick Mahomes arm, and that he's going to have to sometimes check down rather than try to zip the ball in there. I think Wilson will be able to pick up some yardage, TD, and 1st downs in the NFL with his feet, but he'll have to be more careful, pick and choose his spots, or he'll wind up seriously injured due to his lack of size. He's not as fast/quick as Kyler Murray, and not as big as Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. I think he'll have to try to emulate the way Aaron Rodgers runs the ball, maybe a little bit more than Rodgers, but about the same way.
