He's a pocket passer with little to mobility AFAIK. Today's young QB's all have some degree of mobility and don't just drop back and throw. He'd be an exception in that regard.

I've seen most of his "important" games since they finally gave him the shot over Fillipe Stanks, and have been singing his praises to my homer Gator alum friends who still thought Franks didnt suck (because he was more athletic)

Pluses: VERY smart with the football. Puts the ball where it needs to be and leads the receivers.
Cons: Average arm at best. He can definitely push it down the field on big arcing throws, but he's not the guy that can throw darts and lasers in tight windows. (not sure how this translates in the NFL)
Mobility is MUCH less than Sam.

He's benefited from having good targets. When Pitts didnt play vs LSU it showed.

Ive made the Pennington comparison earlier.... has potential to make in NFL, but will have to walk into a solid franchise, solid protection and surrounding pieces.... and I dont think the JETS are it.

    GO GATORS

He'll definitely need to be heavily protected because he moves in quicksand. Unfortunately he doesn't shrug defenders much in the pocket either.

I think he'll definitely get a chance in the NFL though and deservedly so. I feel like with his frame he can stand to add more zip on his throws over the middle. I wonder sometimes if it's a physical limitations or if he just tries to throw too many touch passes. Because he's a big boy.

Not a good fit for the Jets though. Might be a good fit in New Orleans actually.

I hear you on mobility, that’s the one negative I see... still the guy doesn’t seem to get rattled. Was sacked 5 times vs Alabama, but still threw for 408 yards, 3 tds, and another rushing td and no int’s.

against LSU, he threw for 474 yards 2 tds and 2 running tds...

against GA (now#9) he threw 474 yards 4 tds...

    against Texas A&M (now #5) he threw 312 yards 4 tds - no int’s...

If Trevor Lawrence put up these stats against these teams people would claim he’s the best college Qb of all time.

Saying Trask is not a good fit for the Jets is like going back in time and saying Mahomes was not a good fit for the Jets and him landing in KC was a better fit...

The kid can play, you don’t put up these stats against these teams any other way...

This is a nice breakdown of a few perfect throws vs Alabama...

This is what separates Trask from other Qb’s.

Also Pitts is a beast + would love to come out of the draft with him vs any of the top WR’s...

Stats aren't a very good measurement of a quarterbacks ability.

Jason White won a Heisman and put up monster numbers and barely got drafted.

As @stinkyB outlined his problem is his arm over the middle and into tight windows. There's no doubt he has good touch on the ball. Can he rifle a ball in between safeties in a cover 2 on a 20 yard sit route? Can he beat the corner to the spot on a 15 yard deep out outside the numbers without floating the ball?

He's a good deep ball thrower though and drops it in the basket. He rarely over or under throws streaking receivers. But the deficiencies over the middle in ball that need zip are a big concern.

I saw this back in early November. Merged our threads. Trask is my guy. Really really like this kid. If we decide to trade down, I hope we pick him up.

    JV,

Not a college football guy. So tell me this, can his deficiences be fixed by a good offensive coordinator or a head coach?

He has the size, football IQ and touch for the ball. I really really like him a lot.

Well. The system can be tailored to his strengths. But at some point, every quarterback needs to make those sort of throws.

I think his mechanics can be tweaked to get more torque on the ball. He swings his hips open and if he drives forward more into his throws it should generate more zip.

He's a big guy and he appears to be pretty coachable. He reminds me of Brees in the way he puts touch on the ball and you can't teach a guy to be a good deep ball thrower. He needs big targets IMO because he sometimes has a tendency to throw high which is why Pitts is perfect for him. It's also gotten Pitts absolutely destroyed a couple times though.

The mobility thing is an issue that can't be corrected. But if he drops some weight (in a good way) he can be more nimble.

Think a WCO similar to the one that Kirk Cousins excelled in while he was in Washington.

I don’t disagree, stats alone don’t mean much...

My point was playing well (w/statistics to back it up) against top teams + being 6’5” - 240 usually means you are getting drafted earlier vs later.

I think he has enough arm to throw all over the field. I saw him fire some over the middle that could not be defended. His arm is not weak by any means, maybe not elite, but enough with his accuracy and timing. He has a lot of nuance to his game, reminds me of Drew Brees.

i think he’s going to be a good NFL qb, but I’ve been both right and wrong before... :)

Where is Trask projected to go ? Could we get him with the 2nd #1 pick if we move up a few slots ?

he’s a super hard guy to project. He gets 1st round all the way to 3rd round grades.

On one hand, he’s got the size, accuracy, results and acumen of a top pick. On the other, he’s not s great athlete, doesn’t move well and has average arm strength. He’s a prototypical pocket passer in a time when the NFL is going away from that sort of player.

Still I expect he ends up the 4th Qb off the board - Trevor, Wilson, Fields... those guys go top 10.

I've been watching some more tape on Trask and slowly talking myself into him at the end of the first/beginning of the second. His touch is not something that can be taught. And I think his arm gets bigger if he cleans up his mechanics.

The lack of mobility is definitely a big concern. But he's decent enough in sliding around the pocket and getting rid of the ball when feeling the rush. It's not ideal though but I do prefer him over Jones.

The thing with Trask is that he absolutely needs to be protected better than mobile quarterbacks.

I’ve watched everything I could find of Trask. He’s a great kid to boot. I think he’s pretty damn unflappable, in college he has been able to take a sack and then have that rare ability to make a clutch throw like on a 3rd and 15. It’s elite Brady/Brees/Manning type stuff in how easy he is able to pick up the 1st. He’s also the polar opposite of Darnold in how he can go through reads and work in the pocket.

How/if this can translate to the NFL, IDK. He’s got some tremendous receiving options that cloudy the waters some.

Definitely going to watch Florida’s bowl game.
So many options for the Jets to build now.

One thought for me is if Jets could walk away from the draft with Sewell, Trask and then a WR like Florida’s Toney or maybe a powerback like Najee Harris...

I have a lot more confidence in Trask with protection than I do with Darnold right now.

For what it's worth, he's playing for Dan Mullen who developed Dak at Mississippi State. Mullen is an Urban Meyer guy (although Mullen is kind of a whacko).

Interested to see where Trask goes. I think his draft position is more up in the air than anyone else this year. Like you said - he could probably be a top 25 pick or a third rounder.

I only saw him against Alabama and I was impressed. I do agree that he doesn't have a huge arm, but it seems adequate, and like you said, maybe can be improved with better mechanics - it's certainly easier to that than to improve accuracy. I'm reminded a little of Brady with him - not saying he can be a HOF'er, but who knows? In the pros QBs who stay in the pocket and aren't so quick to run seem to fare better. I think that's because while in college these guys can outrun most of the pursuit, in the pros they rarely do - 6'5" DL running faster than most QBs is pretty common in the NFL. So not being so mobile may actually make him better as a pro. I do agree, from what I saw, that he has a great feel for making plays, and completing passes. He might be a guy to consider in a trade down situation.

The Jets cannot afford to trade up.
