Becton consistently played better at LT than at RT in college. Run blocking vs pass blocking does not equate to LT vs RT.
How do you know? Your assuming he can't make the switch, while being just as dominant. Move him to right tackle and Sewell to Left. Or vice versa, doesn't matter when both are blowing people off the ball and giving qb all day to throw
It’s a complete luxury and mis-use of resources to draft a stud LEFT tackle at 2 overall...makes no sense when we already have our franchise LT and the interior of the o-line needs more help anyway
LOL it would be nice but it’s just not the correct move to me Trade down, drafting a QB, drafting the top pass rusher or playmaker would all be ahead of this for me Yes he’s supposed to be great but putting one of him or Becton at right tackle is a luxury, one of which we can’t afford at this time when we have a million other issues
Misuse of resources? Dude, building a stout offensive line isn't a complete luxury. You do know that one of them can play right tackle, right? Please explain to me how this pick doesn't make the team better immediately. It is not a complete misuse of resources at all. Its one pick.
I wouldn't be mad if we took Sewell, but I wouldn't be happy. Our tackle spots are locked in for next year with Fant and Becton. The IOL is the problem with the line this year, not the tackle spots. The Jets desperately need a playmaker on the outside.
It's gotta be a bit tough for JD...who to draft...hmmmm. His career depends on the guys he drafts developing into great players...no duds. But the whole 'developing' thing is in the hands of the coaching staff, which is a big ? as this time. Should he draft Fields and 'hope' the incoming HC is great developing QBs? Should he take Sewell and 'hope' the new OLine coach can work some zone blocking magic with two LT's (one playing RT)? Without knowing who the coaching staff is, and their strengths, it's gotta be tough deciding which players to draft. I know the new HC will be on staff, but never working with him before has to be scary for JD when deciding who to draft.
You can find a solid right tackle in free agency or later in the draft....you don’t get the number 2 overall pick often There’s a reason left tackles are usually the only linemen that go top 5...there are better olinemen at other positions but the position itself isn’t as valuable I understand we would have two great tackles, but I’d rather have one great tackle, one solid tackle, and the #2 overall pick to use on other needs
I believe he started his career at UL at RT and struggled. For whatever reason he said he’s naturally much more comfortable at LT and took off from there.
Hopefully he will be given time to get to know the new staff before free agency and the draft. But knowing the Jets, we'll sack Gase and get a new guy in halfway through training camp...
Yeah, ideally. But our new coaching staff will never have worked together before. Yes, JD will have some idea of the kind of offense/defense the new HC like to run. Same with the coordinators and line coaches. But until it all comes together with live games, over a season or two, it's really hard to say just how good the new staff will be as using and developing young players.
The footwork is also completely different. Some coaches even encourage left side offensive lineman to put their left hand down, right side offensive lineman to put their right hand down. And obviously the kick and plant legs are different. Becton and Sewell could both play right tackle. But it doesn't automatically they're both as good on either side. I wouldn't mess with Becton at all. And if you want to take Sewell, then you need to have serious conversations with him about playing right tackle before doing it. And get a look at his footwork doing so. I don't think it's a smart move though. Right tackle is equally as important as left tackle at times but I think Sewell would be too much of a luxury with a quarterback worth taking and two-three receivers. There's also a big tackle from Virginia Tech that supposedly had a great year. @KurtTheJetsFan have you watched Darrisaw play? If that's a route we want to go, maybe we'd consider him at the second first round pick. Fields + two stud tackles.
I totally agree with you regarding Sewell and not paying $60 million for OTs. I will be shocked if JD doesn't trade Sam. I don't believe that JD wants to link his career with Sam's either because of Sam's play or because it was Mac that drafted him. That said, I don't think he should draft a QB in 2021 just to draft one. That would be a panic-type move imo. He has a 6-year contract. He could go with a vet and Morgan next year, then look to get his QB in 2022 or even 2023. He wants to succeed and build a winner. Panicking and taking a QB out of fear or because he thinks he has to, would not be the smart move, and would undermine his other efforts, because unless he got lucky, that QB could prove to be a bust or just meh even though Douglas had built a great team around him. We know that QB is the most important position, so when he does take a QB, it has to be the right one. Most GMs only get the chance to draft one QB. If they miss, they're fired within a few years. Douglas would have to build a situation like the 2009 Jets where the team carried the QB to the playoffs. That could give him the opportunity to draft a 2nd QB, but maybe not.
it's less likely to bust out but still it's not guaranteed which was your point. nothing in the draft is guaranteed or my list would be nothing. not even 1 person
If you keep Darnold, you either have to pick up the option for year 5, just let him walk at the end of the season, or hope that you can extend/re-sign him if he plays well next year. If you were Darnold or Darnold's agent, would you sign an extension/re-sign with the Jets after they tried to ruin your career and then refused to pick up your 5th year option? I wouldn't. I understand not being high on Fields and not wanting to reach for another QB that high. Picking Sewell would not be wise, or an efficient use of draft capital or cap space. The options then would be to trade down, then either take a QB, Chase, Pitts or some other player at a position of need, or the Jets could stay put and take Chase or take Micah Parsons (I haven't watched him, but know that he's rated as a top 5 pick, is supposed to be an impact player at the NFL level, and can rush the passer. He could be our answer at Edge.).
The only problem i have w/ drafting Sewell w/ the No. 2 is at some point, if both Becton and Sewell become top tier OT's (you hope), you simply cannot afford to pay both of them, which means one of them won't be here in the next 4-5yrs. Go the FA route to bolster the line or trade down (if possible) to pick up some stock and draft whatever position you need.
