It's the same two mistakes every freaking time with these guys. They're either giving people power who have no interest in what's best for the Jets, or they're playing Whack-A-Mole with the coach and GM jobs: 1. Woody fired Tanny and kept Rex, which made the GM job less attractive. 2. He hired a consulting firm that couldn't care less about the Jets to pick the new GM. Predictably the firm recommend a guy who had no business getting the job, Idzik. 3. He refused to fire Rex, incentivizing Idzik to tank the 2014 season so Rex would get fired. 4. He fired both Rex and Idzik, which was the one smart thing he did. 5. He hired Charlie Casserly and Ron Wolf, who couldn't care less about the Jets, to pick the new GM and coach. Predictably they recommended a guy who had no business getting the GM job, Mac. They also recommended Bowles, who wasn't the worst hire but didn't work out either. 6. Switch to Chris. After retaining Mac and Bowles a year too long, he fired Bowles but not Mac and decided that the new coach would have to have Gregg as the DC. This made the HC job unattractive, though Sam's promising rookie season gave the Jets a chance. 7. He let Peyton Manning of all people talking him into hiring Gase. Peyton couldn't care less about the Jets. 8. Mac and Gase lasted for less than one offseason before Gase talked Chris into firing Mac. This ensured the new GM would have to like Gase, and I'm still suspicious that Douglas still does like Gase. (Even if he doesn't anymore but once did, what does that say about his evaluation skills?) 9. The Jets hit rock bottom under Gase but got lucky enough to do so in the year Lawrence is coming out for the draft. One problem: Gase knows he's getting fired at the end of the season, so he's been doing everything in his power to get a win even though that's the worst possible thing for the Jets. And it finally happened. And that's why I'm now this close to giving up on the Jets. Not because it's impossible for a team in our position (i.e. most likely no Lawrence) to ever become a contender. But because, unless the Johnsons finally see the light, which they've shown no indication they ever will, it will be impossible for this team to ever become a contender.
Man, this hurts to read. Especially when it comes full circle at the end with Douglas and Gase not being on the same page regarding the tank and it costing us Lawrence. Ugh.
Shah Khan giving money under the table to Marrone to tank. There is nothing else going on in JAX. Whats weird is Minshew has not been awful either
If Gase were fired, we would win even more games and wouldn't even be in the conversation for Lawrence. The guy has the absolute worst offense in NFL and has no input on defense. We won one game all year, and that's due mostly to defense. As far as Lawrence/tank is concerned, I don't think anything could have been done any better by the owner. If Jags starting QB weren't injured for so many games, we probably have #1 pick locked up. Or if they make a FG last week. We won one game all year. Normally this is more than enough to secure top pick, but ...maybe it still will be. And short of a coach being GM as well, pretty much anyone with 0-13 record would try to go for a win. So, at least on this point, I do not blame the owner.
One would hope they care about wins and losses but who knows. Johnson bought the Jets in 2000 for 635 million. Today they are worth 3.55 billion so I doubt he is looking to sell.
Besides, if the Johnsons are truly the imbeciles that most of us (all?) think they are, then inevitably, they would have found a way to screw it up, and the team would have wound up winning, or they'd have bragged about it to the press and the NFL would have taken the Jets #1 pick away.
Absolutely right. And that has been my worry for weeks and why I kept focusing on Fields. This outcome was too predictable. The Jets never played like they were tanking. Gase is just that inept and had ruined almost every single game with his play calling and poor adjustments. The Raiders game was the first time he actually earned a win all season, and then lost it because of Gregg Williams, who instantly was fired. You could argue they did not even win the Rams game. The Rams malfunctioned pretty much every way you possibly can, and still almost won. Douglas made some roster moves, and traded some vets, but that was not enough to be considered a tank. They kept starting Sam, got all 3 WR healthy again, so you knew this could happen. Did not expect it against the Rams, but the Browns and definitely Patriots were possibilities. Wouldn't shock me if they go (3-13) now either.
Look...I hate Gase as coach and he never should have been the hire, but I have to give him credit where credit is due. this team was 0-13 and we never heard about much finger pointing, at least not by the players. Also, they have played hard all a long...we didn’t have a bunch of guys mailing it in and rolling over. that’s a credit to the character of the players and also, as much as we may not admit it, it is a credit to Gase....he has kept this team together. it is what it is....his record sucks and he needs to go....but in this area he did well
Personally...I think the Browns will beat us...they are a good team and they are fighting for a playoff spot and possibly the division now that Pitt lost last night. I do think we have a great shot at beating the Patriots...they suck regardless, now they lost Gilmore, and our guys are riding high right now and playing for pride. On top of that, it IS the Patriots, so I’m sure we’ll be up for it...at least as up as a 1-13 team can be.
That truly is a surprising part about Adam Gase. The team started (1-7) in 2019 and (0-13) in 2020 yet the teams never quit on him. Not sure why that is or how that happened, but it is true. Now, it doesn't matter when your record is a combined (8-22) in 2 seasons, you have to go, but I agree he gets credit for that.
Its why he simply needs to let Douglas needs to make the hire and have full responsibility. His job is then tied to the success of his coaching hire, he will make every effort to bring in someone good. OR (if Johnsons must pick someone) they need to work connections with people who do care about the success of the franchise such as Jets alumni who hold connections to quality coaches. Basically you don't want a firm or NFL insiders not related to Jets to pawn off their friends onto us like they're doing that candidate a favor.
I don't think Idzik tanked to get rid of Rex. He had a cap mess that he had to clean up before he could rebuild through the draft and accumulate assets. He was unfortunately a horrible talent evaluator and probably operated in a timeshare for who was selected in the draft with Rex (see; Louisville Slugger and big hitting trash linebacker Jeremiah George).
I agree but I think it also speaks to the lack of talent and the youth of the roster. Very few of these players can afford to quit. They're still trying to make it in the NFL.
