why would you move a guy who is playing at a pro bowl level in his rookie season and was a 1st rounder last year to a new position for a rookie? this isn't madden
we already have becton at LT and a ton of needs and this draft is deep at OT and we can get a good starter in the mid rounds and we have fant who has been solid and edoga still. it's the OG position we need to look at more C and OT has been good for us this year
because he's better suited to play right tackle than left tackle. If you can acquire a great LT prospect, you move him to the position he's better suited for
If we have an opportunity to create a dominant offensive line with this lick then do it. Ball control, more time to throw, ground and pound. That pick at 2 would make the biggest impact in my opinion. I'm not against trading it for a haul, but I'm not passing on the next Orlando Pace. No exaggeration with the comparison. Now if Becton can't slide to right tacke, different story, but i don't see why not.
based on what? the fact he could make the pro bowl as a rookie LT? the fact he protected darnolds blind side great all year and shut down the best edge rushers?
Small correction. Our 33 is now a 34. You know what else is ironic. Jacksonville's other first rounder this year is the Rams pick. So we helped both of their number 1 picks improve by winning.
Honestly, I think drafting Sewell would be nonsensical. The Jets had a terrible offensive line for so long that half our fans now think the trick to competing is that you must have 3 pro bowlers on the o line. Becton and Sewell in back to back drafts would be committing way too much premium capital towards our line. It's overkill. It's important to have a decent offensive line, yes. But let's not get carried away. This team needs a QB followed by weapons on offense and then CB/edge on defense.
The last time the Jets were any good they had 4 1st round picks on the offensive line. I'll forgive you if you can't remember, its been a long time. Like 10 years. But it wasn't "overkill", it was a winning roster.
It was a winning roster 10 years ago, yes. The game has changed a lot in that time. We also had one of the best defenses in the league at that time, something we do not have now. To win in the modern NFL you either need an elite QB or an elite EVERYTHING ELSE. It's way harder to consistently field an elite "everything else" than it is just to find an elite QB and pay him whatever you need to keep him. The best teams nowadays are teams with top tier QB's and elite offenses. The offensive line is a piece of that, yes, but an elite QB makes up for a lot of other weaknesses on offense. None of it really matters without an elite QB. In fact a lot of the sharpest analysts are now considering sacks to be more of a QB stat than an offensive line stat.
Becton and Sewell may be overkill, but I would not be opposed to grabbing another good prospect with the second first-round pick or the second-rounder, depending on who's available. I still think the offensive line is the foundation of a team. A good line can make a mediocre quarterback serviceable. A poor line can get a really good quarterback killed. See Burrow.
But outside of Lawrence, there might not be an elite QB prospect. I would never argue that offensive tackle is more important than QB. No position is more important in any sport than QB in NFL football
Yep. Every team in the playoffs will have one thing in common. A top o-line. People think having a "servicable" o-line is good enough to go places. Its not unless you have an all star team at every other position. We need to build up front.
Yeah, I guess the takeaway is that there are no easy answers now that we're not getting Lawrence. Everything else was riding on that and we screwed it up.
totally agree You make excellent points ...with Sewell and Get the best FG Guard ..now you talking about us having arguably one of the best offensive lines in football...get a RB in the draft become a more run dominated team then we won’t have have to rely on Sam passing us to victory....it work in 09 &10 with Sanchez and I believe Darnold is better than Him...Look no further than the Titans and their run game with Henry.... running the ball keep the defense off the field and Fresh ....Lastly picking a quarterback other than Lawrence at # 2 would be a reach i’m not impressed enough with fields or Wilson to take them with the # 2 pick in the draft.... The Bengals will take Sewell at three if we don’t
One of the options would be to trade down from the #2 but stay in the top 5. Any of Sewell, Ja'Marr Chase, Micah Parsons or the better of the two Alabama WR's fits a need and has All-Pro potential. I mention the two Alabama WR's because when they played with each other they were unstoppable. When Jaylen Waddle went down Devonta Smith just kept rolling despite not having another top WR opposite him. Nick Saban has turned Alabama into a WR factory at this point and it is the odd year out when an Alabama WR is not a top 10 prospect that translates well to the NFL. Waddle is the speedster but Smith looks like the second coming of Marvin Harrison.
We should still be at 33 at least. The SOS tiebreaker alternates in subsequent rounds so I believe the Jets would still be at 33. As for what they should do? I have no freaking clue as I have been so wrapped up in the idea of Lawrence I haven’t even considered any other options. First thing is they must hire the best HC possible that would be crucial with Trevor but even more crucial without Trevor. The next decision will be in regards to Fields vs Darnold. Although I am down on Fields after his performance on Saturday he should certainly not be out of the discussion at 2 and that is going to have to be a real serious conversation between JD & the new HC.
Oh?? What about the Titans ?? With there running game they were able to go to the AFC championship game... Tannehill wasn’t throwing more than 20 times a game
