As we are licking our wounds and recovering from what was an absolute nightmare today, I was thinking of something for the past 4 weeks but wasn’t letting myself reeeally think about it because I was all in on the tank... Isn’t it kind of silly that in a league with a 16 game schedule and a draft that’s so important that there isn’t some sort of lottery system? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Agree that NFL has tanking problem. Maybe it’s time for NFL to Reconsider how the draft order is done especially at the top. Personally I don’t like that SOS is tiebreaker, if tied at end of season then need some kind of lottery/coin toss. SOS is assigned, so not fair to hold the teams to it when tied records. Head to head would be better, or common opponents... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sucks how it turned out, but SOS is probably the fairest way to do it. For instance, if we'd had last year's schedule this year, we probably wouldn't be 1-13 right now.
There should be a lottery system like the NBA...sick of openly rooting against my team for most of the year because of what’s at stake in the draft.
Rewarding teams for sucking never made sense to me. The best idea I've heard is to create the draft order by rewarding winning as many games as you can. This entices every team to play balls out until the end. No tanking. The first pick goes to the team with the best record that misses the playoffs. The second pick goes to the team with the second best record that misses the playoffs. And so on, until you finally get to the playoff teams. At that point you can reverse it. In this scenario, teams like the Raiders, Cardinals and Patritots would be picking in the top 5 and dogshit teams like us and JAX would be picking 17th and 18th. Then the 14 playoff teams would be ranked in reverse order with the SB teams picking 31 and 32. People say it's not fair, because teams like us and Jax will never improve. I say ... too bad. Do a better job of running your organization. I don't see the Steelers, picking in the top 10 ... but I do see them always loaded with good players, a no nonsense coach, and making the playoffs every damn year. To me, the draft should be a tool for competent organizations to restock and reorganize. Not some scratch off ticket for crappy organizations to pin their hopes to every year.
This is beyond stupid a league is aiming for every team to have a shot to keep fans interested this system would basically mean that the bad teams could NEVER improve idiocy
You can't do this. The problem is that picking 15th-20th every year would make some teams perpetual cellar dwellers. Like 'no reason to come to the game/watch the game, etc' bad. It's true that a few franchises manage this under the current situation but it would be like 6 forever bad teams under the system you propose. The NFL can handle having the Lions, the Jets and the Jaguars suck every year. They really couldn't handle having the Cards (no Kyler Murray under your scenario), the Browns (no Baker Mayfield) and the Rams (no Jared Goff) also in the full retard sweepstakes every year,
I never understood the idea of a lottery exactly how do you think it would prevent tanking? if the worst team has more chances than the next worst team, and so on, there is still an advantage to be the worst. it’s not as clear cut as the current system, but it is still there lottery is bullshit and opens up to corruption and allowing for the lottery to be rigged it’s not a good idea
This Ido agree with...the SOS tiebreaker isn’t the best measure...I get that objectively it looks good on the surface, but to me, head to head should trump it, then common opponents would be the next best thing. But SOS is too dependent on divisions and the set schedule, and it leads to bad outcomes too there was one year where we lost to Denver in the season and ended up tied with them, but since we had the Patrioypts in our division our SOS was higher and they picked ahead of us, even though they had beaten us head to head. makes no sense they should do it like they do the playoffs seedlings....head to head, then common opponents, then conference record, etc
Your kind of whining is EXACTLY the problem I just spoke about. See us winning any Super Bowls? You think it's because we haven't been drafting high enough??
I can't possibly disagree more. It would force teams to do a better job. The reason bad teams are bad, has very little to do with not drafting high enough. It's 90% because they have no idea what they're doing.
The system described would allow the 8-8 Steelers, which is where they bottom out most of the time in their cycles, to pick top 3 or 4 in that draft. It would allow the Packers to pick top 3 or 4 when they had a down season. It would allow the top teams to retool too easily. Who would have had the #1 pick in 2008 the year Tom Brady got knee-capped? The Patriots. It just does not work. A weighted lottery system that gives the worst team maybe a 25% shot at the top pick? That would work.
exactly! but the reason we suck so bad is not because the system is set up to hurt us. it’s because we have idiots making the decisions, and they don’t know what the fuck they are doing, they hire terrible GMs, they hire terrible coaches, and they probably make 100 other terrible decisions behind the scenes that we don’t even know about. what you’re proposing is very different. You are proposing a system that makes it even harder for teams to improve. It systematically penalizes the worse teams. It sets up a system that ensures irrelevance and then fan apathy for the bottom teams the problem isn’t with the system...it actually gives every team a chance to improve. What the teams do with those opportunities is what separates the cream of the crop. It’s why teams like the Steelers and Seahawks and Ravens can be consistently good even though they never have the top picks...because they know what they’re doing. Your system would give those teams an additional systematic advantage. no idea why you can’t see that
You make some valid points, but the goal isn't to make it difficult for good teams to retool. They seem to be able to do that no matter where they draft. The goal is to not have numerous teams tanking and getting rewarded for it. There has to be a way to take away the incentive to lose. Maybe you're right about the weighted lottery.
It's somewhat amusing that the same people who were celebrating the drafting system yesterday want to reengineer it today.
Nothing wrong with the current system. The number of winless teams since the league’s inception would attest to that.
Good organisations, with good people running the show, do well no matter where they draft. Bad organisations, with idiots running the show, do badly no matter how many times they pick sixth or third or first. Good organisations find solid pros with the 20th pick. Bad organisations find busts with the No.3 pick. The draft just underlines which franchises know what they're doing and which don't.
Folks I am not convinced that Trevor will be the answer to the Jet's prayers. Yes, the QB is an important position. The Pats fans are finding out the hard way this year. Recent history has shown that the #1 QB pick is not always the best selection. As Jets fans, we can't be upset for our team playing their asses off. This was a great victory but the stupid draft centric media will tell you it was not. We have a lot of draft picks in the future, lets see what happens. The team will have a lot of holes to fill either with or without Trevor. In the meantime, Thank God 2020 is coming to a close!
