If JD's OL acquisitions were any good at all, Darnold wouldn't look as awful as he does every Sunday. JD's plan was to try and fix the OL via FA. It simply hasn't worked out that way. The OL is still a work in progress and if improved, why every Sunday do we see Sam getting his ass kicked? We saw that last season too. Sorry, but JD should have stated he was going the stopgap route. His mission was to address the OL, not pull a MacCagnan and sign driftwood to one year deals. Outside of Becton, the OL is barely mediocre. So, looks like JD has to go back to the drawing board again for the OL. TL's career depends on it and if JD doesn't do anything on the OL, TL had better keep his ass in school if he knows what's good for him. If the OL is that much improved, then it has to be the OLC...right?
If you agree to come be the GM of a team, and it is your first job as a QM , you must believe in the coach you are being joined up with. JD s first mistake. Signing Khaldi (sp) the second, choosing to be a GM for the Jets with there weird chains of command , the third When you are replacing Adam Gase ( who is stepping down ) as GM it is bad. The whole handling of the Osemule situation. The handling of the Bell situation, JD knew Gase hated the signing like all of us did when he took the job, knowing Gase as a casual fan I knew he should trade Bell as soon as possible. Signing Frank Gore ,especially with Bell on the roster. I could see it if you traded Bell, but....The handling of the Jamal Adams situation, you let both side become so toxic that you need to trade Adams, the dolphins traded a good left tackle that nobody in the NFL would trade straight up for Adams. Adams who is a much better player and is much cheaper as far as contract. The dolphins got 2 number 1s and a three from Houston. Houston picks any smart man could see could be very good based on the team they were trying to build, and the picks that the dolphins will get this yr could be from 5-12 first round and same level pick in the second rd. Tunsil stinks and I believe that Houston iis paying 18 million per. Adams still has a good contract, and we are going to get 2 1st rd picks in the mid to late 20s and a third late pick , for a cheaper , star of a player. The worst part is the formula was already there. This is what houston paid if you want Adams here is what you need to do. Robbie Anderson, enough has been already said. Except Sam was even more destroyed by Anderson leaving. Sam Darnold , as a GM you were brought in to surround him with a team to win ,. This was the third overall pick in the draft JD as a GM has to be able to find the right players to make a qb better and a coach better When JD came here he had one of the best prospects in the league in Sam. Yes the mono hurt but JD did nothing to make this team better. Even the trade of Leonard Williams ,which as a casual fan I loved , can we replace his talent as he is playing on the the Giants , for the money and picks? That is close. Even the GMs before JD drafted Adams, Q.Williams, Maye, Darnold, JD I think lucked into sucking for Lawrence because he is a bad GM much more than it was his great rebuild plan, why would you come out and support Gase ? A true GM would say everyone is responsible and needs to do a better job. I think JD is Gase 2.0
JD doesn't have to explain everything to the media and fanbase. He has said that he believes in building through the draft and not with expensive FAs. Based on that, all one has to do is look at the players he signed and their contracts and it's easy to see. It's not rocket science. There was a lot of discussion on this site about the OL and JD's moves following FA. I think you have forgotten. Darnold looks awful, because he IS awful. He's had time to throw. Flacco had time to throw. Sam's decision making is slow, he has trouble reading defenses, and he probably PTSD from his previous two seasons. That's the major problem with Sam now, not the OL. The OL definitely needs to be upgraded, and it will be. As a former OL, JD isn't going to stop. Have you forgotten all the holes that the Jets had (still have) and that it would have been impossible to fix everything in one offseason? You also can't have 5 new starters on the OL. As it was, having 4 new starters, with no mini-camp and OTAs, and no preseason really hurt the OL play early. Again, that's common sense that most of us recognize. As I said earlier, reports were that JD was also limited in what he could spend in FA this year, there were also limited options in FA. He can't just snap his fingers and make really good OL available in FA. The best OL never make it to FA unless they have off-field issues, are clubhouse cancers, or are older, very expensive, and have injury issues. JD's plan was never to fix the OL via FA. You dreamed that.
2021 should be about a new QB showing progress through. 2022 should be about the QB taking a jump and a possible playoff spot. 2023 should be about an established QB leading us to the playoffs. In that time frame, there needs to be a #1 CB and #1 Edge added in some way to give the defense the pieces to stop opposing offenses from marching up and down the field.
Well, that was back when I thought this franchise stood a puncher's chance of being decent this season. I don't think that anymore. What JD's plan is I really could care less. I'm only interested in results, not potential. And I'm not willing to wait another 5-10 years for it either. Looking at this team's history of developing QB's, TL would be out of his mind to play for the Jets. Especially with this "stop gap" OL and mediocre WR corps. JD needs to step it up this draft OR face the prospect every other failed Jets GM has faced. Especially if Chris Johnson sticks his inept nose into the hiring process. JD's "plan" had better start showing results. Anybody can hit on can't miss prospects but its the later rounds where the gold must be found. On paper, this team is better. On record, its worse. If this team is what its record says it is, that goes for the GM too. He needs to step up his game period. No more excuses.. Show me the wins or better yet, show TL the commitment to winning. Otherwise, TL is not coming and the Jets will continue to suck.
I totally agree with the bold. With regards to Polian , I remember reading an article a year or so ago that said that Polian had become senile or lost his eye for talent by the time 2011 rolled around and that was why he was fired. He would have been 69 at the time, so it's not out of the question. I don't know what to think regarding Polian. As I said above, I read an article that said that Polian was getting senile, and that his couple of drafts weren't very good, and that was why he was fired. If true, then I doubt it was an intentional tank, and he may have thought Curtis Painter was a viable QB. Following are his last 3 drafts for the Colts. 2009 1 - Donald Brown, RB 2 - Fili Moala, DT 3 - Jerraud Powers, CB 4 - Austin Collie, WR 4 - Terrance Taylor, DT 6 - Curtis Painter, QB 7 - Pat McAfee, K/P 7 - Jaimie Thomas, OG 2010 1 - Jerry Hughes, DE 2 - Pat Angerer, LB 3 - Kevin Thomas, CB 4 - Jacques McClendon, OG 5 - Brody Eldridge, TE 7 - Ricardo Matthews, DE 7 - Kavell Conner, LB 7 - Ray Fisher, CB 2011 1 - Anthony Castonzo, OT 2 - Benjamin Ijalana, OT 3 - Drake Nevis, DT 4 - Delone Carter, RB 6 - Chris Rucker, CB I don't know who Polian may have taken instead of whom he did, and I don't recognize most of the above names. I don't keep up with other teams or the NFL in general, but the only names I recognize are Jerry Hughes who is pretty good, Anthony Castonzo who I think is still starting and is pretty good, Donald Brown who I think was highly regarded coming out of college, Pat McAfee who was a very good kicker/punter, Pat Angerer, Austin Collie, Fili Moala, and Curtis Painter. I'll leave it up to you and others who may know those drafts and/or those players better than I as to what the quality (or lack thereof) of Polian's last 3 draft classes were, and make your own conclusions.
Yeah...Polian was getting up there in age, but I don’t think he was going senile...he still appears on NFL Radio on XM each week...he doesn’t sound senile to me. That guy is a hall of fame GM who built the Bills into a consistent Super Bowl contender, then the Panthers from scratch as an expansion team to the playoffs, the the Colts to a Super Bowl. Not man6 GMs have his kind of resume. I respect the hell out of that guy. and much like Parcells...he didn’t claim success on teams that were stacked when he got there ... he’s more like Parcells ...he built his teams it’s one of the things I don’t understand about Phil Jackson in the NBA...yeah...he’s got a bazillion championships...but he coached Michael and then went and coached Kobe. Ok...two of the best players ever...he didn’t really build from scratch. Not saying it’s not earned, because to be fair, those teams had Michael and Kobe before gone got there and didn’t win, but still, it’s not the same. but yeah, people like Parcells and Polian, who go and build teams...I respect that a lot
I respect what Polian did with Buffalo and Carolina as well. I wanted him as the Jets' GM. I don't know what to believe about his being senile. 69 is young to go senile, but I know that it has happened before. I was just sharing what I had read, not saying that I believe it. The author could have been mistaken, could have been trying to give Polian an excuse, or maybe had an axe to grind and was trying to make Polian look bad.
Listening to the hype about Douglas and how he is going to build through the draft, I thought I would look at his resume at the Eagles, as personnel chief. 2017 1 Derek Bennett 14 th DE avgs 6 sacks per 2 Sidney Jones 45th CB bust, cut 3 Rasui Douglas 99th CB backup, cut signed by Carolina is being exposed for his 4.59 as late 4 Mack Hollins 118 th WR waived 5 Donnell Pumphrey 132th RB waived 6 Sheldon Gibson 166 WR waived 7 Nathan Gerry 184 lg seems to be ok special teams player that was switched to safety Bennett and Gerry are still on the team, Bennett very avg or below avg DE 2018 ! Dallas Goedert 49th TE Good Tight end , I liked the kid. I quess production has dropped off 2 Avonte Maddox 125th , many are saying he can not play outside many say should be a safety , hurt this year, third cb pick in 2 yrs 3 Josh Sweat 130 De Has 6 sacks this yr, 2 coming in his last game against the Saints 4 Matt P:ryor 206 Ol avg o-line support 2019 Andre Dillard OT 22nd Not much here , moved to right t after 2020 pick . Injuried and I believe done for the season Miles Sanders RB 53 rd Avging over 5 yds a carry a gem. The rest of the draft is out of football from what i can see. I do not see the amazing drafts that we need from JD based on his past record. Howie seems to be doing a better job since JD is gone The Eagles gave very little resistance in letting JD go. Meanwhile we drafted Jamal Adams, Maycus Maye, Herndon, Q Williams, Sam Darnold. The point is if JD is such a great talent guy with the draft why are the Jets team out drafting him. Plus why are the eagles having better drafts without him? The guys that took these guys are horrible and are out of the NFL , yet JD is the answer
JD sucks, but some on this board thinks he’s Pope John Paul and can do know wrong. JD...let a top-10 WR walk! yo when has the Jets had a legit wideout threat. Robbie was a very good player for us...and homegrown and he spurned him. Why does everyone think this guy has a master plan. Ok. you drafted a big LT. Yeah teams need that, every team needs that. Outside of Becton/Mims, his draft is bad. He’s not a great drafter either. Macc did better with drafting than he did at the Eagles. JD/Gase should be fired. Let’s move on and finally reset with a GM/Coach on the same page.
Robby is a top-10 WR? I like him but there's no way he's a top 10 WR. How is his draft bad?? It's still the rookie year for all of his picks and 5 of them have become starters. Even if they do end up being bad, it's way to early to say his draft is bad.
Admittedly, I don't follow the Eagles closer than others so I might be off on this. But wouldn't JD only bring up suggestions to Howie? Since he wasn't the GM just VP of player personnel.
Yeah it's tough to place the blame on the Eagles for failed draft picks solely on Douglas's watch. And not for anything but he comes a lot more highly regarded than Maccagnan did. Maccagnan still doesn't have a job. Idzik got hired right away. Douglas was sought after in this league. Doesn't mean he'll be a good GM. But he at least has the right concept behind building a team and doesn't seem to panic like taking Hackenberg in the second because someone floats a BS rumor that the Texans are taking him.
Those football metric sites that grade every play must have the answer. This is easily quantified above and beyond looking at sack numbers. What do those say about the Jets line individually and as a team ?
There could be very good OL FAs this year because of the Covid-19 Cap Crunch. I certainly hope and expect that Woody has not put a cash limit on spending. I know all guaranteed money must be set aside and this requires an immediate downpayment but unlike other sports, football was still profitable in 2020. If a quality OL is available as a FA and the price isn't outrageous, we have to pounce.
I saw nothing of that, I think Irsay was really irked that a better backup wasn't around in 2011. Not sure why, since they got Luck. Irsay blew it on Grigson. There were also personality issues.....Polian could be nasty at times, and his son Chris, too. Folks were walking around on pins-and-needles, there were some articles there in the Indy press.
As I said, I was just sharing what I had read for whatever it's worth. The author could have had an axe to grind and been trying to discredit Polian, or may have even thought he was helping cover for Polian's nastiness by blaming it on senility, or he could have just made it all up for the heck of it.
