Cowher is not an ideal choice but he would be much better than a coordinator. Moving forward the Jets need to have a "buck stops here - face of the franchise"- type football CEO. The little-guy head coaches aren't getting it done and the guys who are prima donnas with no head coaching experience before the Jets blow out after a couple of years when the weight of the ego is not matched by the results on the field. The only HC the Jets have had in the Johnson Era who had a real chance of being anything was Eric Mangini and he got fired in a fit of pique after the Brett Favre experiment failed. Well, and after his ego got out of control and he started looking at things other than football at times. You wouldn't have caught Bill Belichik getting within a mile of a Sopranos cameo after 7 Super Bowls, let alone one 10-6 season.
He definitely isn't my first choice but I don't think I would be upset about the hire . I'm sure he would be able to put together a competent staff and the team will be prepared each and every week.. something we haven't seen in two years with this AG team.
My big question about the hire would be if Cowher thought Douglas was worth anything and was willing to work with him on an even basis in their two separate spheres of competence. Cowher resigned in Pittsburgh after 2007 because he was having trouble getting along with the GM and the personnel people working under the GM.
That’s the logically sound choice, but that win could be nullified by the Seahawks performing well in the playoffs. If we’re going to win one game this year I want that game to to be epic, and nothing would be more epic than crushing the Patriots playoff hopes in the season finale.
The point is you don't pay Hooper $10mm per year for 30 receptions <300yds and only 2 TD's through 12 games. Bryant has the next most TE receiving yards at 164 through 12 games. That is under-utilizing the TE position. For comparison a guy like Darren Waller is earning on avg $7.5mm per year and has 70 receptions for over 700 yds and 7 TD's. Their mis-use of Hooper is a total Jets-like move to over-pay for no production. The Jets Herndon has < 200 yds so they've used to TE even less but hes only getting paid $750k. Huge difference. Their best win was this past week vs Tenn. Besides that the only quality win was against Indy. The potential is there for them if they do more with Hooper to the short - mid passing game. If you're going to pay a TE that much you need to use him. If they beat the Ravens and the Steelers lose to the Bills this week it sets up a huge week 17 match-up for the division. If they really want it they need to use the tools they have better.
Right and hopefully the Jags beat Chicago the week before thereby sealing the #1 pick for the Jets going into Foxboro.
That's not what the Pittsburgh papers said/say. Cowher needed time off (his wife had just died or was sick) and he was also underpaid. In fact, he would have brought people from the personnel dept. to his next job.
That's my ideal scenario to finish the season. Jags steal one from Chicago/Indy, finish 2-14, the Jets beat the Pats in week 17 to knock them out of the playoffs and avoid the 0-16 season while still getting Lawrence.
If Cowher wants to return to coaching, the Jets would be an ideal situation for him. A competent GM, a top 2 - and likely #1 - pick and other high draft pick, a lot of cap space, and a media machine hungering to anoint him Savior of the Jets. Given that he's stayed in close touch with how the game has changed by being an announcer, added to his proven ability to coach and motivate players, he'd be the best choice for the Jets who desperately need someone like him to lead them. I really hope this rumor is true.
It’s very likely not true. I was listening to the segment at the time and Boomer said nothing. They were all trying to get him to say anything and then finally said something about he’d be crazy to turn down 20 mil. The only reason I give it any credence at all is because Boomer didn’t immediately shoot down the possibility like he has in the past.
Indeed, I was just saying they are using the TE's just spreading it around, they probably didn't need Hooper, it is no wonder Njoku is pissed and wants out, I would have him here btw.
I’m not sure he can put together a good staff. 14 years is a long time to be out. Does he still have the pull i the coaching ranks to bring the right people or will he be bringing a bunch of guys that the game has passed by? That’s my only pause in hiring cowher
Update on the Jets and Jaguars for the #1 pick: Jets Schedule: At Seattle At Los Angeles Vs. Cleveland At New England Honestly, hard to find a win there. Possibly at the Patriots Week 17, but that would have to involve the Patriots purposely trying to lose. As much as I loved the match-ups against the Chargers, Dolphins and Raiders and thought the Jets had a realistic chance to win, I dislike the match-ups against the Seahawks, Rams and Browns. Jaguars Schedule: Vs. Tennessee At Baltimore Vs. Chicago At Indianapolis The Jaguars schedule has more winnable games, but I feel they are purposely tanking, so it is hard to say they can win any. The Titans struggled last week. The Bears are pretty bad and the Jags beat the Colts Week 1.
Keeping Glennon at QB when Gardner is begging to get back in tells you they are tanking. Either way the Jets and Jags wind up with Lawrence and Fields, it's just a matter of who gets Lawrence. My gut is Jets lose out or win 1 and Jax finds a way to beat bears or Indy to secure #1 pick for Jets
Nice breakdown! Browns and NE are both a concern because of poor timing-- Browns if they have a spot locked in could play lazy or rest starters, NE if they don't have playoff hopes. The one bright spot is nobody should want to be a winless teams first win. Well see, just 4 games to go
The Browns will be playing to win for seeding. NE will not lay down for the Jets. The Jets will not win a game this year.
With their loss tonight, Dallas is in the #4 draft slot. I'm telling you now...especially if we get the #1....if Dallas is in the 3/4/5 position....expect "rumours" that Lawrence and/or Fields (maybe) say they won't play for a team drafting ahead of Dallas (and right now, Cincy @ #3 will NOT be taking a QB, that's for sure). Jerry would dump Dak Prescott for Lawrence (or Fields, maybe) in a second....he'd save $32 MM a year and have a potentially better QB. I'm telling you the stories will start in early-2021.
