not to throw cold water on anything but it was only a few years ago the saying was Such for Sam. there are others on this list too Sam Bradford who didn't suck so much as he was always hurt. or Andrew Luck or many others football is a team game. tough for one guy to be a savior. Settling Lawrence up to fail the moment we anoint him savior. And while it sounds nice to say who cares about Sam focus onTrevor, it ends up that success in football is the result of a culmination of lots of good picks and lots of good trades -- not one magic bullet. if i missed the one magic draft pick or one magic trade please let me know. Even in the case of Brady where you get a potential GOAT in the sixth round they had a team full of other major contributors. So it's important that we get as much as we can for Sam too. Again not to minimize the impact someone like Trevor or whoever else can have which can be profound but to reiterate this is a grind where we need good drafts, trades, and development and to a much less extent FA saviors or draft saviors.
it's the frustration talking just like people want one guy to turn the franchise around they think one guy -- if only - is to blame
Like I said in a previous post, QBs are extremely valued in the NFL. A guy like Darnold with flashes of potential and at worst a guy that can make plays and win you a game will be valued by some teams. If no one offers what you want then keep him and trade when/if a starter goes down
No I agree.... I was just talking about what JD could get for Sam if he decides to trade him. If we have the extra cap, I'm all for keeping Sam along with Trevor (or Fields) for at least 1/2 a season. Let the new kid watch and learn for a bit. Then, over the bye week, do what the fins did....Sit Sam and bring in the new kid. Then trade sam at the trade deadline.
That wouldn’t be the worst thing but I’m not sure a new coaching staff would want a “controversy” with the rookie here, and it wouldn’t be that fair to Sam. If no one offers fair value, then it is what it is, but ideally a team like the Colts or Bears or whoever gives us picks in this draft
If we re-signed Flacco to 'guide and mentor' the new QB than we could probably deal sam on Draft day.
I disagree. That only matters for the Jets. They could be getting the #1 or #2 pick and there are very talented QB's there with Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. Paying them a lot less makes more sense than taking a risk on keeping Darnold and having to pay him a lot in 2022. For a QB-needy team, that is not an option for them. Sam could be the missing piece and worth the risk of a late 1st or 2nd round pick. Maybe package a 2nd and a 5th or something like that. If Sam works out, you got a massive steal. If he doesn't, not too big of a loss. People keep talking about this massive contract for Sam, but that is not how the NFL works. He hasn't earned that at all. If he does, you got a bargain of a trade and you will be happy to pay him. Yeah, that makes sense. To me, it is easy to see that Sam has potential, and still does at this moment. Yeah, agreed. That is another reason why saying a 3rd round pick or less is ridiculous. If that is what is offered, then you just hold on to Sam. As you said, an injury could happen headed into 2021 and all of a sudden Sam is worth even more. That won't be the case though. Some team will offer a fair deal for him. Compared to how he is talked about on this site, he was great! Hey oh! I agree with you though, but isn't that saying something? Despite all the negativity and how horrible 2020 has been for the Jets, Sam is continuing to fight and improve. That shows me something if I am one of the GM's around the NFL evaluating him.
Less likely that he improved and more likely that he happened to have a decent game this week. Honestly, he hasn't improved at all as a Jet; he's no better now than he was as a rookie.
Sam was never the prospect that Lawrence is. Even so, we don't tell Lawrence that he's the "savior," but any QB taken #1 in the draft is going to have that expectation. Douglas has already begun fixing the OL and WR corps, and I believe that he will continue to do so in the 2021 offseason. No one is saying that Lawrence is going to be it except the posters who are failing at logic and speaking as if Douglas will add no more talent other than Lawrence. It's mind boggling!! Douglas just had one of the best Jets' drafts in a loooooooooong time. He handled the draft like he's been doing it for years. There is absolutely ZERO reason to believe that he won't add any more talent around Lawrence. It's really ludicrous of you to even say that. Just because there aren't more talented players on the team now, doesn't mean that they won't be there by the time next season starts. It will be nice to get more for Sam, but it's not that important, certainly not at the risk of losing out on Lawrence. Think about what you're saying. You're saying that it's more important to get a 2nd round pick for Sam rather than a 3rd, or at best, a 1st round pick for Sam rather than a 3rd, when losing Lawrence could cost us hiring the HC that Douglas wants, could cost us the multiple SBs we could win with Lawrence at QB, and it could cost us 3-4 other great players that we'd take with the #1 pick in each round. The two are in no way equal. Your reasoning is a fail. Your last paragraph is flat out wrong imo. It doesn't have to be one or the other, and an elite QB can cover for a multitude of flaws on a team. You are minimizing the impact Trevor could have with your comments.
Yeah, I meant this season, which has been a struggle. That is my main concern about Sam. How hard he has worked, yet minimal improvements and as some have said: regression. I attribute a lot of that to coaching. We will see if that is true once Gase is gone and Sam has a new coach either here or somewhere else.
Sam didn't have a TD pass since week 3 before the Raiders game. Not really sure we can say Sam has improved this year. Statistically this has been the worst season of Sam's career by far, and the others weren't exactly good.
I'll definitely be waiting. Christian Ponder was 10-6 and brought his team to the playoffs only to lose a tough game on the road in Green Bay. Josh Freeman was 10-6 and threw almost 5x as many touchdowns as interceptions. Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston were both allowed to walk from their respective teams in free agency after having their fifth year option declined. Did these guys not have potential as well? Mariota + Winston are backups. Ponder only got a couple camp invites over the last three years of his career before getting cut and Freeman was a backup for a year or two before being out of the league. Teams don't just give up the farm for another teams trash quarterbacks.
No, not for another teams 'trash'. And GOOD QBs never make it to the open market. Until now. Jets/Sam are in a bit of a unique situation. Many do not perceive Sam as trash. And the Jets are ONLY thinking about trading Sam b/c they have a shot at Trevor. If the Jets were 4-8 right now, we'd all be talking about getting Sam more weapons.
The Jets aren't 4-8 right now. They're 0-12. He's 11-23 as a starter with only four more touchdowns than interceptions. He averages 215 yards per game with a quarterback rating under 78. Do you ever bring anything to the table other than ridiculous hypotheticals or bad comparisons to decent players in this league?
I agree that young QBs have a higher value than your average player. However...I think the league knows that we're drafting a QB and we need to move Darnold. Or at best, he'll be off the team in a year. That undercuts his trade value tremendously. I can't imagine there'll be a huge bidding war for him. No team is that desperate for a backup/project.
Well, I'd say Sam looked better, not necessarily good. You can't have three turnovers in a game and call that "good". And it was a very low bar for him to look better: he hadn't thrown a TD in what, 8-9 weeks? I agree that most people here have labeled him as "trash", and despite his flaws, he is not that, but an honest evaluation of him shows him to still have some major issues that will prevent him from being anything more than maybe a .500 QB unless he corrects them, and I don't think he can do that as a Jet. He still has accuracy issues. That INT was due to him A) Locking onto Perriman and staring right at him the whole time allowing the CB to jump the pass, and B) Was thrown off target - it should've been thrown to the outside where only Perriman could get or, if it was intercepted it would've been out of bounds. He still has bad pocket awareness, running too soon or not running soon enough, which caused the two strip fumbles. His arm strength is not what it needs to be. I'm not sure if this is due to injury, or, more likely, due to his poor footwork/platform that robs him of velocity. He gets rattled easily. As soon as he had that first turnover I KNEW it wasn't going to be his last, and sure enough, the next possession he throws a pick. Some of all of these can possibly be corrected, but I doubt they can be here. It's best for both parties if he and Jets part ways.
We should be focusing on analyzing Fields v. Lawrence but we're still trying to convince the last 5% of our fanbase that Sam isn't good. I can maybe see the argument that we will be able to find a dumb team to give up too much for Sam but honestly why would they? Yeah he's young but he's been among the worst QB's in the NFL his entire career. Being young doesn't mean you'll improve for sure. In fact most guys who start their careers poorly are just bad QB's and never get significantly better. Honestly I find it hilarious people act like there are GM's lining up down the street licking their chops to get their hands on Sam. He's a terrible QB.
Yes, he has serious flaws that maybe able to be corrected, or not, but he's still not "trash". As much as you're criticizing the Darnold supporters as being blind, you're also blind to the incredibly bad effect of having TWO shitty HCs and TWO shitty systems to learn in his first 3 years, surrounded by shitty talent, and having this year's TC cut short and no contact drills or preseason. You put Trevor Lawrence in those same conditions and watch him struggle as well. Yes, I think TL would fare better, but his development would still be badly stunted. Sam's issues MIGHT be correctable, or at least minimized. Put him in a system that serves his strengths, and doesn't accentuate his weaknesses, and he can be a successful QB. Gase however is proven to be a "square peg = round hole" type of guy. I think a 1st rounder would be unrealistic, but a 2nd and later round or a 2022 mid/late round pick would be reasonable.
