Darnold is an NFL quarterback, if he can't get someone to teach him the fundamentals, that's his fault.
Sorry, but no matter how cute the analogy, I think it's utter nonsense. One doesn't have the opportunity often to draft a great QB prospect. When one does, one better take it; otherwise, they'll constantly be looking for the next QB and gettting mediocre, inconsistent QB play. A great QB can put the team on his shoulders and lead them to victory. Mediocre QBs cannot do that. It's easier to get all of the other positions than it is QB. To suggest that one needs to build the team first and then find the QB is an epic logic fail, it ignores NFL history, and ignores common sense.
I wonder if his coming out early from USC had something to do with his development being behind the curve. I still think Sam can be a viable backup QB AFTER he leaves NY. He's done here..
Saying otherwise ignores Tim Couch, David Carr, Vinny Testaverde, Steve Young, Jim Plunkett, Steve Bartkowski, etc. etc. etc. who had all the ability in the world but got put in shit situations and either never got a shot, or finally found a good situation in which to succeed. Or does their NFL history not count?
I think there's too few data points given the small sample size of quarterbacks drafted #1 overall to come to a solid conclusion on whether it's a good play or not. That's why I included the other things. Do you honestly think that you can analyze a future QB taken #1 overall based on past ones?
The only one on that list that found any sort of sustained success thereafter was Young. It'd be interesting to see what QBs got put into shit situations that succeeded and what measures that success.
I do not. I do think it's awfully hard to win games from the IR list or from medical retirement. I do think that's the destination for a #1 pick that comes here. Either immediately if nothing is done to improve the line, or in 2-3 years when our veteran free agent linemen want new contracts. I do not see any evidence to the contrary.
A great QB can put a good team on his shoulders and lead them to victory. Occasionally he can put an average team on his shoulders and lead them to victory. Though a lot less then you think. On a below average team you get 2-7-1 like Joe Barrow or 3-7 like Deshaun Watson. We are somewhere below a below average team.
Its starting to alarm me that so many fans think we can take JL and then Dan Snyder a team together in FA. I worry that if so many fans think this way then maybe JD does too. Not rational but it alarms me.
I wouldn't worry. I think Douglas has a blueprint and he's building towards that. That said, I'm not sure I'm in full agreement with whatever it is - and none of use know what it is AFAIK - but I firmly believe he's a true, experienced professional, with the right background and understanding of how to build a winning team.
This is a good point. I have more faith in Douglas than I do in all these fans who think the answer to all our problems is to win the lottery.
Well. For one I missed Plunkett on that list. But for what it's worth he's the only 2x SB winning quarterback not in the Hall of Fame. And never started a full year in his career after he left San Francisco, even in the two Super Bowl winning years.
I hope so. If the whispering isn't true and TL isn't worth numerous high picks (1s and 2s) then by all means draft the kid. But if it is true, a team in such a drastic need of a solid foundation like the jets would be out of their mind not to trade one pick for it. We are talking building a potential dynasty off of one draft pick. TBH it is the only thing that makes this travisty of a tank half bearable. If we blow it all on one golden boy that is going to lead us to the middle for a couple of seasons then...well...as a jet fan I should expect that. Draft day will be when we finally meet the real JD.
That is a fair and reasonable assessment. My dad thought he was some kind of superhero back then. Dad was only about two years younger than Plunkett, so he was probably just amazed somebody his age could still play.
1) I agree with your entire post--thank you for putting it out there eloquently. 2) The part I quoted is really the heart of my issue: No matter how they choose to use their draft picks, the Jets will screw this up. They'll either have the wrong plan, or they'll have horrendous execution, or, most likely, both. This is why I am upset at the idea that they are going to put all their eggs in one basket. The truth, however, is that they're going to break all the eggs, no matter how many baskets they put them in. They're the Jets. Perhaps I'm just getting myself worked up so I can finally quit this team and go root for a real team, like the Lions. Probably not, though, because I didn't during Kotite, or Coslet, or any other damn time...
But but but, they've sold more of each Sanders, Stafford, and Megatron Jerseys than all Jets jerseys combined. What would you give for a real QB, and arguably the best RB and best WR talents of all time? Of course, back to the point--they have nothing else to show for these individual star players.
