Then how does Sam Darnold fall into all this? Your're saying that JD will let Gase play out the season then fire him, and in the meantime Sam is playing like shit and we should give Gase the benefit of the doubt that no coach will do better? Yes Gase is still here because of the Johnsons. But the question is will Gase still be here in 2021? Meanwhile Gase is given a long leash on Sam's development , which is leading to his demise which means that his trade value sinks further. Yes I can see from your scenario that Douglas doesn't give a shit about Gase or Darnold. You're narrative is that Douglas is telling Gase he sucks , don't care how the players play while he's the head coach, just clear your desk after game 16? Not very convincing. Well see what plays out. I don't like what is unfolding here. EDIT: To emphasize Darnolds situation, assuming that he will not be with the Jets in 2021, wouldn't you want to put him in the best possible situation to maximize his value by show casing him with some one who knows how to use him? It certainly isn't Gase. I would fire his ass and put anyone in there to replace him. It has to be an improvement.
Good luck to Williams... he was excellent find before his injury and played well. The comp JD got was good and as others have stated, he is doing what needs to be done...Glad he is here and finally doing something to rid this morbid franchise of the losing mentality. And for those that think AG has a future here, please get in touch with me, I have some land to see you in AZ.
At this point wouldn’t you rather just watch the Sunday Suckage and let the Jets go 0-16 and guarantee the 1st overall pick? Other option: Make a change, win two meaningless games. Improve Darnold’s trade value from a 3rd to a 2nd. Meanwhile, Jags get the first overall pick, take Lawrence, leaving the Jets to decide between taking Trey Lance at 3rd overall or just go with Darnold for another year. You tell me which is the better option.
Most likely, Douglas has already decided that Sam is not the Jets' future QB. With regards to the bolded question, no, I'm not saying anything even remotely like that. I'm not sure where you got that from. To begin with, until we get notice that the Johnsons have stepped aside and given complete control of the football operationto Douglas, Douglas has NO ability to fire Gase. They are peers. What do you not understand about that? Gase doesn't report to Douglas, he reports to the Johnsons. That's what "peers" mean. The Johnsons will be the ones to fire Gase, not Douglas, unless they cede that authority to Douglas. Second, in no way did I even remotely imply that no coach will do better with Sam than Gase. Where in the heck did you get that? I think that maybe you need to slow down a little when reading posts to make sure that you understand what the person is saying, because you totally missed the boat on what I said. I do not believe that Gase will be here in 2021. If I thought that, I'd have already turned in my Jets secret decoder ring and fan club membership, and permanently signed off of this site. I'd have no reason to have any hope for the Jets future. Right now, Douglas is the only hope that we have. We know the Johnsons are certifiable morons. Unless they step back and give him complete control of the team, or at least listen to him and do what he tells them to do, there is no hope for this team, and if Douglas thinks that Gase has done a good job and deserves to come back, then he's an imbecile and moron too, and the NFL might as well go ahead and fold the franchise or move it to the moon. Do you really think that if Gase were fired, that they'd be able to make wholesale changes in the offense and how they handle Sam? They wouldn't. Either Loggains or Cooter would become the OC, and they'd have little or no choice but to continue with the same offense. They might use different plays and call plays differently than Gase, but there would be no wholesale changes. Sam is going to need a QB guru, the right system for his talents, and an OC and HC that can fix his fundamentals, build his confidence back up, and design an offense around his talents. That's not going to happen in this lost season. His time here is most likely done. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that he would be traded after the new HC has been hired and just prior to the draft, It will be up to Sam's new team to try to fix him. Neither Loggains or Cooter are going to do that. If I were GM, I'd keep Sam and have the new QB Coach, OC and HC work with him and try to rehabilitate him, then I'd showcase Sam in preseason to increase his trade value. I'd then wait until some team's starting QB went down with an injury or the trade deadline before trading him. That may not be realistic, however, as the new CS probably won't have time for that as they'll be working with Lawrence or Fields and focusing on teaching the whole team the new offense, and probably wouldn't care or want to rehabilitate a QB for another team. I didn't say that Douglas doesn't care how players play. That's absurd. Of course he cares how they play, because when they don't play well, it makes him look bad too. Again, Douglas can't fire Gase, only the Johnsons can. You really need to work on your reading comprehension.
You are saying this based on what? How do you know what JD is thinking? You hope he is on the right path , but is he? The guy screwed up our o-line last year, has lost some our best players in Avery,Adams and Bell When he was named GM . The dolphins got two number 1s and a 2nd for a good lt in Tunsil. The guy is good not great. The Jets had the blueprint and should have gotten more for Adams. Houstons picks that Miami will recieve this yr probably in the top 10 Houston is 1-6 and a early second rounder. The best pick we get from Seattle for our best player is very close to the worst pick the dolphins get to complete the Tunsil deal. All JD needed to do is say I want Tunsil value all of the work was done, not Impressed. Look at what has happened to Sam. Remember when he first came into the league. He had that first interception for a td, yet he rebounded right after that played good. JDs job was to make the number 3 overall draft pick look like a star.He has not. You think when the Jets met with him about the job they wanted him to let the Jets become what they are today. No. Did JD envision this. I doubt it. We got 2 late rd 1 st rd picks and a third for the core of our team. What a mess. Gase and JD
The sense of firing Gase now, or a month ago, is to have some other coach direct everything Darnold does to see if he is redeemable. There is no reason to believe that Gase's little buddy won't be on the same bus leaving town. For anyone who's been around here longer than three days to start using the term "potential franchise quarterback" on yet another possible draft pick just shows that it's not just the Johnsons who never learn.
We need a trade deadline tracker. We may have all 32 2022 5th round picks by 4pm. Jordan Jenkins must be filling the SUV with gas as we speak.
There is no point in firing gase now. The tank is on. The last thing they need is for the team to win games. Gase is the best candidate to lock that in and the scapegoat for the failure. It wouldn't surprise me if JD and the Johnson's (who are admittedly idiots) told Gase he's got the season to show something. That would be win/win for JD and the team regardless of the outcome.
I don’t think Darnold can turn it around in NY. I think he needs to be somewhere where he can sit for half a season before taking over so he can work the bugs out of his play. He’ll never have that opportunity here. I just don’t want the Jets to beat New England this week. If the Jets go 2-14, and their only wins come against NE, you not only lose the chance for Lawrence but also likely hand him over to Belichick. Losing out is the best situation for this team.
Adams trade is very comparable to Tunsil trade actually. Yes, now it looks even better for Miami, because Texans have underachieved, but they had All Pro QB and their picks were expected in 20s, better than Seattle, but not by much. First pick Miami got was #23. Seattle that year was #29. They did get a second rounder as well, but had to give up a starting WR. Jets got upgrade from 4th (in 2022 thankfully) to 3d, but got a starting safety back. So, overall, I would say trades are comparable, but Miami did get a bit better, and lucked out with Houston playing bad this year. What you have to understand though is that left tackle is a lot more valuable than a safety. Look at the highest guaranteed contract for a safety: 44.5 mil. LT, which is actually Tunsil himself, is 57.85. But even below Tunsil you see top LTs make a lot more than safeties. That's because they have a lot more value and you will get more value for them in a trade. So, I think from the perspective of getting possible value for the Adams trade JD did fine. This is not to say Adams is not worth more, he is, but no one will pay more if you want to trade him. And trading him at least so far appears to be the right thing to do, because we may actually get Lawrence or Fields because Adams is not on the roster. That alone far exceeds Adam's value plus Adams was demanding a huge extension as well, which a rebuilding team is simply not in position to offer. Miami also ended up with a QB as a result of tank, but that QB, though very talented, has durability and size as huge question marks, which (if we get lucky) Fields or Lawrence don't.
It depends on what he costs. If they have to pay him $25-35 million, then no. And I don't know how much flexibility Darnold has in determining that number, it may be a union bargained amount. Then again, he may feel he doesn't have to take a pay cut and will be happy to go elsewhere to play if he's offered more. But in concept, I like the idea of keeping him, even if they get "the Savior", to foster some competition and to maybe be the starter to let "the Savior" sit and learn for a bit, something that should've been done with Sam.
I can't help but feel the last bit has helped Mahomes no end but again he sat and learned from quality coaches and a decent QB. Still not sure you are onto a winner by referring to Lawrence as 'the saviour' especially not after everything you have said about our failure to draft Mahomes, what do you want man? You can't have it both ways, we failed to pick Mahomes, do we then make the same mistake and ignore Lawrence?
Not really considering the salary cap is going down and most the NFL will have to trade a ton of good players that are getting paid as such. Jets are in a position to where they can get a bunch of new blood via the draft and veterans who are plus players via free agency and trades.
I'm using the sarcasm in response to all those who have declared Lawrence an absolutely, can't miss, slam dunk, and I don't know that there is such a thing. let alone if we'll actually be able to draft him. Everyone in a rush to toss a young QB who has shown some potential - despite all the criticism here - before we even get someone better to replace him. Finally, I haven't personally seen enough of Lawrence to say he's as good as I thought Mahomes was/is...he may well be, and what I've seen so far he does look damn good, but the difference between college and the pros is significant, and he's had the luxury of playing in the best of all situations so it's hard to say how he'll do coming into a shit show like the Jets. Mahomes showed me things that I felt would translate to the NFL regardless of his situation and I was validated in that belief. One of those intangibles was that Patrick's father was himself a pro baseball player, and I felt that being raised with a role model like that was a big one. IDK anything about Lawrence's father or his background (I'm sure I'll quickly find out as soon as DWC posts his comment here! LOL!). Bottom line: if they have the chance to take Lawrence I'd say they have to; I'm not so sure about Fields or the other ones, but they're probably better off moving on from Darnold at this point. The caveat I would put in is if they could figure out how to keep Sam and let him and the rookie compete, and if he can win that, to let him start and let the rookie sit and learn, like the Chiefs did with Smith and Mahomes.
