This blunder by Christopher Johnson doesn’t get talked about enough and I’d argue it was bigger and much more impactful than the timing of the Mac firing. A team should never go into a season with a rookie QB and a lame duck coach. Both the Jets and Giants have recently done this and both QBs have regressed big time.
It seems that the big knock on Bowles at the time was that he failed to make game situation adjustments. This sounds familiar.
Todd Bowels should not have been hired in the first place. His biggest achievement was being an ASSISTANT and DC on 11-5 Cardinals team, finishing second in the division and losing first round play-offs. How the heck does that get you a HC job is beyond me. Only Johnson knows.
IMO Bowles biggest problem (one of several) as a head coach is that he wanted his players to like him, and it led to a breakdown in discipline. MoWilk repeatedly missed team meetings after he got his huge guaranteed contract. and Bowles issued some ridiculous statement that not everyone has an alarm clock, or something like that. And of course other players became aware. It is good to have the respect of your players, but befriend them too much and they will use it.
That may be due to a difference in how HCs and OCs/DCs operate. While it might be ok for a coordinator to "get close" with the players, he can always threaten to get the "mean old HC" involved, but there's no one for the HC to use in that role. Certainly different coaches use different methods, but I tend to agree that the HC has to be able to trigger some fear at times.
Yes, he should have been fired. He should have been fired one year earlier. I'll take it a step further he should have never been hired.
That was just one. His buddy was a horrible DC and when Bowles took over the defense the Jets played alot better. So that proves 2 things his buddy was terrible and Bowles ceiling was always DC as we see his defense in Tampa.
Bowles should have been gone sooner! Maybe with better OC maybe could have done better, but overall he was not good, and downright boring! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not because of Adams being there. Mac thought we didn’t need QB. How stupid! Remember he got a steal in 2nd round with hackenburg. They already had Geno Smith and signed McCown. Lol I just saw this article that supported this: https://bleacherreport.com/articles...y-considered-drafting-patrick-mahomes-in-2017 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think the worst part of Bowles's tenure was that the lack of performance/winning was tolerated - hell, even REWARDED! with a contract extension - for so long. And I fear the same thing is happening with Gase. Apparently the Johnsons tolerance for shit is bottomless.
Ironically enough, you can make the case that the ideal person to pair with Bowles the HC was Gase. Firery, angry prick to be an enforcer type. That said, a few people have said Bowles will wait out Arians or only go to “the perfect situation.” But to answer your question, while I love that now Mcagnan is getting ripped more so than him, we needed a change. So did Todd I’m sure. However, I’ve still got a soft spot for the only man born and raised in Newark who somehow has a country accent!
No. The 2017 Jets were expected to go 0-16 and went 5-11, like the Dolphins did last year. How could you fire a HC for exceeding expectations? People are forgetting we were tanking for a QB in the 2018 draft. Bowles was not a good HC but he was absolutely fucked over the last 2 years by the worst GM in history of football.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles...ht-jets-had-interest-in-him-before-2017-draft Funny Mahones thought jets were interested! Not sure what to believe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If Gase stays I will not follow this team until his ass is out the door. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
Some people fail to remember that Mahomes would have probably been ruined by this organization too. Same goes for Marino. It all starts at the top. Good coaching, which we haven't had for a very long time. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
