The way I see it, if the Jets lose tomorrow, here's what we'd need to happen to get in... 2 of the following to happen with these divisions AFC North: Cincy needs to lose. AFC South: The only way this division would bother us is if Jax wins and NE loses to Tenn (sadly, that's probably the most likely scenario). If both Jax and Tenn win, Tenn knocks out Jax based on divisional record. If Tenn wins, Jax loses, then Jax is out, and we have the tiebreaker over Tenn based on win strength, I believe (and the heads up win could help if there's only a 2-way tie).If both teams lose, obviously they have 8 losses and are done. AFC West: DEN loses and KC wins (and since they play Jax, that kills 2 birds with one stone). The easiest ways are by KC beating Jax and either Denver losing to SF or Cincy losing to Pittsburgh. Actually the real easiest way is just by winning every game, but that's not what this thread is talking about anymore...
LET ME SAY THIS to start before I outline the scenarios: We can LOSE and JAX can WIN next week and we CAN STILL MAKE THE DANCE!!!!! Ok, let's get into the scenarios: Thing to keep in mind: * If Tennessee beats NE, JAX is eliminated (TEN is 2nd in their division, and those ties are broken first) * If DEN/KC end up tied in their division, KC eliminates DEN (2nd in their division, and that's broken first) * Teams in contention are: DEN (9-6), NYJ (8-6), CIN (8-7), TEN (8-7), JAX (8-7), KC (8-7) So we get in if: 1) We win out 2) We win 1 of 2, and the following occurs (2 of 3 needed) a) CIN loses to PIT b) TEN beats NE or JAX loses to KC c) DEN loses to SF AND KC beats JAX Why is all this true? We win Head to Head tiebreakers with KC (conf record) and TEN (head to head). We lose to DEN (conf record), JAX (h2h), CIN (conf record). Let me outline specifics.... Jets lose 1 of 2 (doesn't matter which)... CIN loses (8-8) DEN wins (10-6) JAX wins (9-7) TEN wins (9-7) NYJ 1 of 2 (9-7) DEN gets the 5th. TEN/JAX/NYJ tie for 6th. Well you have to break the TEN/JAX tie first.. . TEN wins. TEN/NYJ, Jets go. TEN winning today helped us forget about JAX (if they win again) in terms of making the dance.
Thats awesome but New England will play hard next week just in case a win will knock us out. Oh well lets win tommorow and we are golden. I have no fear of an Oakland team that quit on the season coming cross country to play the Jets in the last game of the season. If these guys weren't pros I doubt Oakland would even get on the plane.
Tomorrow the Jets can lose. Tomorrow is a game PLAYOFF teams don't lose. If they lose, I say the Jets don't belong in the playoffs. So forget the scenarios.
That's untrue on so many levels... 1. They're 2 games worse than us and we're on the road against a rival. 2. Vegas has as a deserving small underdog. 3. If that's true, then pretty much every team you can think of doesn't deserve to get in (including New England, who got shutout by them)...
so, from all the information I read our chances of making the playoffs are still around 50/50 if we lose this game and win the Raiders
What I said has nothing to do with rivalries or Vegas. Has to do with the Jets situation. A good playoff team is told to beat a 6-8 and 2-13 team to make the playoffs. Thats it. A good playoff team finds a way to win those games.
See, that doesn't make sense to me. If a team makes the playoffs they obviously deserve to be there. If the Giants make it in the NFC they did enough to get there with their schedule. If we make it losing 1 of the next 2 then we deserve the shot at the playoffs. If you make the playoffs in a very competitive league you definitly deserve it.
NE will not play as hard as you think. WHY? 1) They can't get any higher than the 3 seed 2) They do NOT care about knocking the NYJ out. They'd probably prefer being #3 and us #6... They'd think it's a soft game. You guys have to get over this thing with Belicheck. They will treat this as a BYE WEEK since they will not get one. I will PROMISE you you will not see Brady.
You guys are missing my point. The Jets at 9-7 would be great and still deserving of a playoff spot. I am just saying all they have to do is win these 2 games. They need to do that.
I said before the season anything less than 10 wins in the AFC would not make the playoffs so Jets need to win out to get to that so GET IT DONE!! FRY THE FISH!!
This is about winning in the playoffs. Losing to the 6-8 Dolphins is not good. Then after the loss thinking about making the playoffs. Beat the 2-13 Raiders and make the playoffs due to things going your way. Then lose the opening round. A solid playoff team like I think the Jets are, will beat Miami and crush the Raiders. 9-7 is a good season, but not a threatening playoff team. That is what I mean.
Funny how you guys are arguing with me about my point which is wanting them to win the final 2 games.
EXCELLENT POST. THIS IS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. OBVIOUSLY, WED LIKE TWO WINS. THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE TEAM FOR 30 YEARS KNOW A LITTLE BETTER. (When the Jets got into the playoffs in the 91 season -- I didnt give a damn that it was at 8-8. I was listening to the radio, and jumped when Allegre (right?) hit the fg. Marty Glickman with the call, IIRC.)
