comes down to what the offer is but could be very smart on JD's part yes he's young and ascending and on a rookie deal. that's also part of selling "high" if JD is looking down the road and saying Q is real good but he's also going to demand top dollar when coming off rookie deal AND IF he thinks DT shouldn't consume a lot of cap then this is the time to sell. As you get closer to expiration of rookie deal teams will offer less thinking of him as a rental If he values DTs and thinks the position warrants cap space, then he should keep Q unless he's blow away by an offer Personally, I would be very biased toward keeping him but if there were a WHopper of an offer then i might sell

I'm not trying to single you out and I even said the same thing about Adams. But teams keep the best players they draft all the time. There's going to need to be a time where we stop getting worried about big contracts. They can be structured to front load and hit the cap immediately so they're cuttable after 2-3 years if their production drops off. Dallas pays everyone and stretches it out over 5 years and they have an out around year 3. They've given out big contracts to Jaylon Smith, Amari Cooper, Zach Martin, Tyron Smith, Zeke, etc. And they never end up unable to improve their team. We need to figure out how to keep the few good young players we draft and stop constantly looking to move them because we're oh no terrified of the contract they'll want. The same thing happened with Sheldon Richardson. We all thought he was going to command $100 million. And he didn't and we tossed him away. He's still a good player.
We paid Wilkinson instead, just did not work out. We were all calling jets to pay Wilkinson. In hindsight we should have paid Richardson! Well the 2nd we got, we traded to Indy for Darnold, the they drafted all pro OL. And crap we keep drafting same position. This is another one of the BS reports. Q is good, on a rookie deal, and is not looking for monstrous extension. These type of guys fit the definition of what JD is trying to build around. And contrary to perception, every single move JD made fits the strategy of building via draft and having a core before handing outlandish deals. What he does makes sense. Even Anderson move, which was proven wrong, had some merit at the time. We already had #2 receiver in Crowder with more yards. Perriman was rated similarly on a smaller deal with huge upside at the end of last year. Plus another speedy receiver in the draft. Trading Q now, trading Crowder now does not make sense, and JD has not done things that don't make sense at the time he did them. It's just fake news, like the Crowder trade talk.
Yeah I mean it's all hindsight. But it's just an example. We as fans always get scared off by the thought of big contracts. But everytime we draft and develop a good player, we deal them away. Good franchises don't do that. It's one of the reason we're in the gutter.
Agreed, good teams find a way to keep their best players. And they don't lead the league in cap space. If Adams didn't force his way out, he was the one to pay. If Becton is the real deal, he'll need to be paid. If Mims lights it up, he'll have to get paid.
If this report is true, my guess is that it's based on JD being open to anything that will improve the team, and if he got blown away with an offer for Q - and for me that would be at a #1 and #3, (and if it was a low #1,Ii'd want more than the #3 also) or I would keep him - he would do it. It might also indicate that JD isn't thrilled with Q not being able to play every snap. It's perhaps understandable that this would be the case for his first year, but as the third overall pick in a draft you'd expect that player to be on the field for every down and making some kind of impact.
It's a deeper organizational issue though. These players tout the massive deal they want (since Revis) because they know it's just code for a trade and that we'll do the fake staring contest and then cave and deal them anyway.
Quinnen's situation reminds me a lot of Darnold's - no supporting cast around him. Henderson has not been good this year and the rest have been sporadic, no pash ruhsers, and a LB core that is mediocre. Idk, but the DL has been horrible against the run. Removing Q from the equation, I can't imaging how they can stop from getting mauled. The Jets will then have two lines to find players for. Not an easy task. You can't just buy FA's and expect quick results. The Jets track record for this is deplorable.
Is there any concrete evidence that Q cannot play every snap, or close to that? Or is it GW rotating his linemen regardless of who they are? I've yet to see anything that suggests it isn't GW and seem to recall that he has always done this.
I think it all came down that those guys were a great unit together. And unfortunately when you have great players playing great at the same time, it can put the GM in a bad position.
most good d-coordinaters rotate their lineman so they are fresher for the 4th quarter. plus we have a lot of good depth. I'm assuming anderson gets cut in the offseason (cost 9.3 mil in 2021 but saves 8 mil if cut) and we have Q, mclendon for probably 1 more year, FM, Foley, and shepard. plus we drafted zuniga who seems like he'll play DE for us the way he's listed. no reason not to rotate them
Yeah I'm not entirely sure if this is a conditioning thing or a Greg Williams thing. The other problem is that when Williams lines up on the outside shade of the guard he gets to the quarterback or applies pressure. When he lines up on the nose of the center or outside shade he does not. I can't imagine G. Williams doesn't see this. Is it because we're having trouble stopping the run if we don't put him there? Also RE: rotations. If he wants to rotate players out and given Q a break that's all good. He needs to be in the ball game on 3rd + 6 or more even if it's the series he's resting. We need a late round hog to put next to Williams to maximize him. If anyone has a chance watch Khyrisis Tonga (#95) on BYU tonight. He's the perfect 5th rounder to put next to him. Not sure how old he is (sometimes those guys go on missions and are older than you want them to be).
