I was posting to the Q thread. And, it popped in my head if we ever got fair value in any trade and been long time fan (45 yrs). I cannot remember a trade where the Jets ever came on top! Of course, draft picks are realized in few years, but looking back at those draft picks resulted most of the time in basically nothing. As the prospects never panned out, and most marginal players at best. Some even never playing in NFL. So with all of this talk of tear down, we don’t have a great track record! Yes of course. Braylon Edwards was a good trade Santonio Holmes was a good trade Brandon Marshall was a good trade Keyshawn Johnson was a great trade Abraham was a good trade Leonard Williams was a good trade Jamal- remains to be seen but the value was fantastic. This is off the top of head without any thought, I’m sure there are more. I get it, we’ve sucked for a decade now but the woe is me doom & gloom is so annoying.
Yeah these are trades where we got established players. They overstayed their welcome where they were, and the teams were shedding, worked out for us. We did not give up much, not sure any of those picks panned out for those teams. But getting rid of them was their win. Leonard williams trade, we don’t know since we don’t know what we gave yet in what we got back yet. Same Adams. My point is when we trade for picks, we usually never get good value back when it is said then and done. Say we draft 2 1st rounders we got for Adams and both are busts in 5 yrs. then we traded him for nothing! Through the years we have been miserable at it, it goes back to 70s by the way. The only one in your list is the Keyshawn one. That may be good one, I think we got Abraham back on that one. And remember Keyshawn was 1st pick in draft. Williams was 6th pick, not sure who we picked with the picks. But we got something for him is win, since we were not signing him. Q was 3rd pick, Adams was 6th. Get the trend! We are getting late 1st rounders for top 5-6 picks. Abraham trade was truly asinine, we haven’t had good edge since! Again another case where we didn’t want to pay our home grown. This is not doom and gloom, we are talking tear down, and maybe that is not good idea! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That was restricted FA where they did not match because of poison pill in contract. It was brilliant and huge win. He was worth the 1st an 3rd. And the 1st they got tore his knee up and flamed out quickly due to that. I think he blew it out playing beach volleyball. One time we took it to NE. So good one! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Parcells was! Not sure what NE drafted with that pick, but I assume not HOF. Would have to look that one up to be curious. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Santonio Holmes ended in a terrible way--foot issue, throws football onto field for Def TD, then steals 10 million from jets before leaving. Why do you rate it good? Abraham? You mean #29 pick for him? We got lucky with Mangold but that was not a good trade--it wasn't horrible but not good. How do you validate Big cat was good trade? You mean trading the 6th overall pick for a 3rd and a 4th?
Yes...Demario Davis. Back in 2017, the Browns traded Davis back to the Jets in exchange for Calvin Pryor (btw - Davis was expendable after Browns' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams switched to a base 4-3 defense). He finished 2017 with 135 combined tackles (97 solo), five sacks, and three pass deflections in 16 games. He was a stud and we let him walk in free agency to the Saints the next year for 3 yrs/$24mm (he was considered the top linebacker available). We then sign CJ Mosley to a 5yr/$85mm deal in 2019 to shore up the middle linebacker spot. Once again, thank you Mike Maccagnan for setting this franchise back 10 years.
Yeah that was cluster f. Davis not that good in coverage, but had gotten better. We signed Williamson too, that has been mixed, but injury. So keeping Davis all along, might have been best move. But getting him back for garbage (prior) was great deal! But letting him go again for Williamson and/CH mosely, well that is just mind boggling. Considering he has been great in NO. Same thing with jets, we don’t want to pay our homegrown. We have done that for as long as I can remember (different regimes). Only constant is the johnsons! And when we do (Wilkinson, Sanchez), just did not work. Maybe that’s why we don’t. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey man--that's who we picked--not what we got in a trade. The trade was the 6th pick in the 2015 draft and the use of that player through 2018 for a 3rd rounder in 2020 and a 5th rounder (maybe conditional to 4th) in 2021 draft. This is more like a fair trade--not bad
Trading up for Revis and Harris were great moves. Moving up to # 5 for Sanchez cost us almost nothing. You can say what you want about Sanchez but we got our starting QB for two AFC Championship games and what did we really give in return? The Brett Favre trade four a lousy fourth rounder was another good move. If Favre didn't get hurt we would have made the playoffs.
No argument from me, but draft picks are only realized in time. In this case getting anything for him was a win since we were not resigning. Time will tell if Davis pans out, even if not, we were going to move on from him anyways. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Expanding upon the OP thesis, I'm trying to identify any player who ever came to the NYJ and performed better with us than their original team--via trade, free agency, or waiver. Kevin Mawae comes to mind. Curtis Martin. So many the other way its ridiculous.
Yeah I like did not read you post 1st. Yeah both are great signings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would add the 2007 NFL draft. The draft was considered to be a very weak draft with very little depth. Tannenbaum traded up twice. To get Revis and Harris. Which were both amazing trades which were even better given thus draft was so lacking in depth. That draft and those 2 trades was the cornerstone which made us a very good team from 2008 to 2010. I would argue that in 2008 we had our most talented roster in team history and we had the most talented team in the NFL in those 3 years. In 2008 we had 12 pro bowl and pro bowl alternates (I think it was 7 pro bowl and 5 alternates). Now we do not even have 12 players worth mentioning.
