I agree with that comment about Steeler fans getting pissed at 8-8....that team would 8-8 as a disaster because they play for playoffs and championships....same with the Ravens....consistently good...same for the Niners of the 1980s. we get 9-7 and that’s a high water mark...we’ve only won 12 games what, twice? Ever? it’s a sad commentary on this franchise
Last year's team would have beaten the Broncos and been competitive in at least one of the other games.
Bomber and you could be right. Douglas may have botched it. That doesn't sound like who Douglas is supposed to be, however. If you will recall, people spoke about Douglas as being a great communicator, a consensus builder, a good listener, etc. When combined with how Adams immediately got his feelings hurt that Douglas listened to an offer or two for him last year, and the fact that Jamal had not even mentioned an extension before then, and then how he acted regarding the extension, and how he told other clubs that they wouldn't have to give him an extension, it tells me that the fault is mostly Adams'. Few situations are totally one-sided. Douglas may have originally intended to keep Adams a Jet for life, but when when Adams started whining, and then started demanding an extension, and then trashing Gase, Douglas and the Johnsons, Douglas may have changed his mind and thought it would be a cold day in hell before he extends him or gives him a big contract. If so, I can't fault Douglas. Now maybe he let his pride or ego get in the way, or just didn't believe in paying a SS the kind of coin that Adams wanted. If that is what happened, then Douglas deserves a hit for it, but if he is successful with the draft picks he got for Adams, I don't think that that many Jets fans will care or continue to criticize him for it.
Maybe, even probably, but last year's team had the benefit of a full T.C. and preseason to jell together. Also, what you and the other Douglas crucifiers are ignoring is that last year's team was terrible and needed to be torn down before it could be built back up into a sustainable winner, as opposed to the usual mediocre to poor teams the Jets field every year, so it really should not be a surprise that they would take a step backwards before they can begin to really go forwards. If you give me the choice between going 7-9 and then having middling draft picks so that next year we can expect to go 8-8, or possibly regress as the FAs we signed to get to 7-9 begin to decline or their contracts expire, OR going 2-14 and getting the #1 - or at least a top 3 - pick, and building the foundation for years of playoff contention, I'm choosing the latter.
I totally agree. Anyone that judges Joe by his first year is missing the plan. This year was a let's take a flyer on some players on one year contracts & Then clean house & with a much better FA class than last year fill in some pieces with better quality. Perfect example Van Roten. Typical one & done Player. He isn't playing up to par. You have to look at the whole picture as a multi year plan for the future. A lot of these one year contracts he gave out I don't think that even JD thought would be back next year, Desier, McDougal, van Roten, Gore, Perryman, their all stop gap players till he can find some replacements. I also like the idea that we're younger & cheaper & building through the draft. & that takes time . You can't build through the Draft in one year. Another point is we are 70 to 80 mil under the cap where as MANY TEAMS are in cap hell. Good job Joe D.
Fair point and well articulated. Jamal certainly didnt do anyone any favors by acting like an ass SO early in the process.
Speak for yourself (highlights), I for one have sent letters, send posting to Jets.com daily telling both JD and JC how FU the HC is and that the team is a laughing stock. Do I realize that JD inherited a mess, yes, but in no way shape of form am I allowing JD to get a pass. Indeed, the following is how I ended my letter to both JD and JC... So, gentlemen is mediocrity now the standard for this team? I expect you to say, of course not, but you both are responsible for the composition of this team as presently constituted and the coaching staff. Maybe mediocrity is the standard because most of the time this team is inept, plays uninspired, unemotional football and worst of all they seem unprepared. yet I see second year coaches winning... I expect a team that is capable of be competitive and is well coached. Your team is neither. A couple of years ago, I started to watch the Packers... at least when I do switch I see a well coached team that is competitive and not a laughing stock.
If I'm Douglas I think you want to see Gase fired. You need to see what you have in these guys, especially Darnold. Jim Bob Cooter didn't do a half bad job with Stafford in his first half season. See what he can do with Darnold. Outside of Crowder, no one can really be evaluated properly with this trash system. Is the defense really this bad either? Or are they just dead from knowing they need to play most the game?
One reason Gase will be gone is Joe wasn't afraid to get rid of Adams, he said he has a job to do & that's to make the Jets better. I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate in pulling the plug on Gase. Some may think it's a Johnson call, but I think he's a little shell shock after the Gase pick & he will let Joe make the pick. It may not be till after the season, which I have no problem with. Last thing I want is for Williams to ra-ra this team to 2 or three wins & we miss out on the #1 pick if we get rid of Gase mid season.
Use his 2 years of high draft picks along with new his young QB on a rookie contract to take the 0-16 Jets to the Promised Land. JD will be given awards from all over the NFL. And when his 6 yrs is up here, he will be the most soafter GM in the nation. Good post. I think JD went into the season thinking we'd be like 4-12. He was planning on building around Sam. BUT as the season goes on and 0-16 looks possible, JD HAS to be thinking Trevor Lawrence. In which case he'll trade Sam for a ham sandwich and start over with a new QB on a rookie deal. For GMs, this is golden. I don't think JD will do anything rash this season like brining in some late FA to try and 'spark' the team. He knows Gace is the fall guy.
gase gives me proof that he wouldn’t look like he does in Carolina. I’m not going to jump on Douglas for not resigning Robbie when he didn’t look like he does now when gase had him.
Well I saw it. as did many here. the issue was gase not robby. I'm not going to blame JD for gase. he didn't hire him and I don't think he can fire him either. but he should have never let robby walk. with that said i'm not going to hang him over it. I think overall he's done a good job as GM and every GM makes mistakes. but letting robby walk and signing periman to replace him was an awful mistake. over 4 mil. robby loved the jets, wanted to be here and was talented.
I believe that you're right, at least about Douglas. As for C. Johnson, well, it's anybody's guess. I sure hope that you're right, and we all had better hope that you're right, because if you're not, and the decisions still rest with the Johnsons, there's no hope for this franchise as long as the Johnsons own it.
This guy who we gave a six year contract will soon be the architect of an 0-16 piss stain. Looking good so far.
I think the 4-12 part is correct, but I’m not convinced that Douglas has ever been sold on Sam. I understand that he’s young and that every Jets fan wants him to succeed but Douglas has to look at him through different lenses. There isn’t a long list of QB’s who played like Sam did in their first 2 years and bounced back to become a top tier players. I think the fact that not a whole lot changed with Flacco behind center is pretty damning for everyone but Flacco.
So the rationale behind not keeping a talented player is that the coach is so bad so why bother? Robbie was an ascending player and improved every year. Last year you saw him start to make contested catches and running more than just go routes. ALL of us saw him improving. If Joe D couldn't see that we are in a lot more trouble than we think.
I agree with every point you noted about about Adams , including the whining and the 180 he took about his attitude towards the Jets. Jamal showed his selfish side that makes this all appear that he is the villain. It appears to me that JD never communicated with him personally. Maybe thru Adam's agent? Realistically, that's what agents are for. But that's a pity 'cause with personalities like Jamal, a go-between can have it's drawbacks. Looking at from the owners perspective, what did CJ have to say about this? Would Jerry Jones have acted more out front about the possibility of losing one of his star players? That in itself, is a real issue about the difference's we see with how the Jets are run compared to the Cowboys. But it's just my view on this and this is another subject to ponder.
No the rationale is we would be killing Robbie for sucking like we are the rest of the offense right now. Saying “oh how could he let him go, look what he’s doing there” when he wouldn’t be doing the same thing here just doesn’t not sound logical to me.
Also, the Jamal trade looks awful because Seahawks are going to won’t help super bowl. Those firsts are seconds lol.
