    Why seriously consider this deal?

We'd be trading a STUD, former defensive rookie of the year, MLB with huge talent and who is very young for an aging, injury prone RB. If the Jets wanted a young RB, they would draft one, not trade for portis. Especially when Vilma is the leader of our defense.

    Vilma - 4/16/82
    Portis - 9/01/81

How is Vilma classified as "very young", while Portis is classified as "aging"? They're half a year apart.

There would be good arguments for making the trade and against it. You're trading a former defensive rookie of the year for a former offensive rookie of the year, who are a half a year apart. Portis is coming off an injury, and Vilma is coming off an average season. What makes Vilma a stud and Portis not one?

From Larry Weismann in USA Today:

    Quote:
New York, NY: By my count, no AFC East team other than the Patriots has visited the Super Bowl since the Bills' inglorious run. Is there any hope for the three AFC East also-rans that New England's stranglehold on the division will end at some point. And more than that -- will any of the other three teams ever win a Super Bowl soon?

Larry Weisman: This was supposed to be the year the Dolphins got on the Patriots tail and chased them to the end. Uh-uh. Both the Bills and Jets seem to be building nicely but they are, to my mind, not ready to knock the Pats out in '07. I think the division will truly be up for grabs in 2008. Good coaches, two of whom think like Belichick. We've seen what he is able to do. If the Jets get more 3-4 personnel and a marquee running back (I am guessing they will try to pry Clinton Portis away from the Redskins, and I emphasize that I am only guessing) they could be dangerous. I worry that the Dolphins will have the same problems next year with Daunte Culpepper that they had this year and their defense will be a year older. My best bet for a Super Bowl team coming out of here other than New England: The Jets. But not right this minute.

If Portis became a Jet, he would instantly become the best RB in football, and if Vilma was traded, he'd instantly become the worst LB in football. That is just how our fans are. It is impossible to ask a NYJ fan to be objective. Most people on this board act like Chad Pennington is a HoFer after all, and that we should never trade him straight up for the top third of the QBs in this league (never mind that nobody would make the trade with us). If we need to give Chad an elite RB for him to be succesful, then we need to get someone like Portis. Even if we draft an RB, it will take 2 years probably for him to play at an elite level. At that point Chad will be 33. RBs are only a dime a dozen when your QB is elite, so a Brady or Manning can just plug in anyone, but for the average QBs in this league an RB is much more important than that. So basically I'm saying either we go for Portis, or we go for a new QB.

Newsflash: Every RB fits Denvers system. Thats why they're producing 1000+ yd backs over and over again.
And what do you mean by "horrible"? The Reskins gave up one of the best players in the NFL for Portis. They built the offense around him and now all of a sudden he's a horrible fit? Sorry, cant really believe it. And if a guy like Betts can outproduce him (which just goes to show you that you DONT waste a lot of money on a RB) what makes you think he could dominate in NY?

How many yards do you think he could get here? 1.200 maybe? Guess what, we already have about 1.500 rushing yds combined + 14 rushing touchdowns. And those guys still have fresh legs. Im not giving up one of the fastest rising defensive stars in the league for an "upgrade" (who knows if its really an upgrade) at the RB position. Thats just stupid.

Based on your argument Hurd should be starting for the Chiefs right now and Paying all that money for Martin was one of the dumbest moves in Jet history since rotating 3 mediocre backs produces more with fresh legs for less money.

Fact is it would take more than Vilma to get Portis and the Jets are not a running back away from being a legite SB team. This team while playing well is far from being an elite team ready to compete for a SB. We have to many holes to give up what it would take to get Portis and we are not strong enough on our front 7 to take any one out before we add some serious up front muscle including at LB.

Even Blaylock looked like he could be a Pro Bowler in Kansas.

Thats not a fact, its your opinion. My opinion is: it would take more than just Portis to get Vilma. Sean Taylor + Portis and we might have a deal. :)

whether youre for or against this trade...you guys that that arent even considering it or saying that the Jets would be getting robbed are just out of your minds. out of your minds. As usual, youre way overrating the Jet and underrating the other guy. Mind you Vilma's career is still in its young stages, if you compare the players, so far Portis has been twice the back that Vilmas been a LB.

Add on top of that half this board thinks for some reason Portis is old, I wonder what some of you smoke or drink all day long.....It is a very arguable deal, I would do it, but I could see I guess if people wanted to keep Vilma. But to act like we'd be getting robbed is just not accurate. Its almost troubling that some of you would think that.....thanks 10penn for posting the birthdays for some of these goofballs

Blaylock has always been a backup for a reason.

I like your thinking on Taylor and Portis don't see it but if we could get them both for an undersized LB that would be great.

    Merry Christmas!

I think the average career span for a running back is 2 years shorter on average than just about all other positions.

That being said I wouldn't mind having Portis but I wouldn't want to give up Vilma to get him.

Oh please, who starts to slow down first? An MLB or a RB?

It's not a question of who slows down first as much as what they accomplish while they're moving fast. Portis is a great runningback, Vilma is a good linebacker, great > good every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If you think they built their offense around Portis, you're sorely mistaken. Gibbs has barely adjusted his power running system for Portis. Betts is much more of a power back than Portis, he is the perfect RB for that system.

I know he would be much better here than he's been in Washington (although he hasn't been bad there), because Schottenheimer runs a system similar to the ones run by Denver/San Diego, and it is a system better fit for Portis' running style.

And when you bring up total rushing yardage, you fail to mention that the YPC is 3.6, which is horrible. We have about 420 rushing attempts right now, with Portis, I imagine he would have about 300 of those for between 1350-1400 yards, and the other 120 would go for about 450 yards, which would give us 1850 total yards rushing and a YPC over 4. Much better, imo.

It still doesn't make Portis an "aging" back. He has 3-4 more years of being a prime, elite back. Vilma has 4-5 more years of being a prime, "good" 3-4 LB.

Portis has averaged 1415.5 yards a season in Washington, until he got hurt this year. He's averaged 8 touchdowns a year, and 35 balls through the air. Your argument has little merit, since every back that comes out of Denver's system has pretty good success, with the exception of Olandis Gary.

Reuben Droughns, Mike Anderson (although a fullback now), Portis, and even Ron Dayne is better then when he was with the Giants.

Ladell Betts looks like Tomlinson? He's having a decent season, but he also doesn't have a nose for the goal line like Portis does. I wouldn't exactly call Ladell Betts pathetic, as a 5'10", 230 lbs. back with tremendous leg drive. Try watching some games instead of staring at the stats. In no way is he getting outproduced; not to mention Portis has played hurt all year. To get a player of his calibre for Vilma, who has struggled heavily this year in a system that he will more than likely always struggle in, would be a tremendous trade for us.
