If enduring Gase for 12 more games is what it takes to secure the #1 pick then I'm all for it. He's going to be fired at the end of the season anyway barring a miraculous turnaround in our remaining games.
If...IF...you could guarantee that the Jets would get the #1 pick with Gase remaining as HC, I could ALMOST accept that. But you can't. The Jets will be getting a lot of players back this week and although their talent level isn't going to be that much greater, they will be improved. I'm willing to bet that even with Gase they can win just enough games to screw themselves.
But not as many as without him. Gase alone I would say is good for 4-5 extra losses a season. Even if not Lawrence, we will end up with MUCH better draft pick with Gase. At this point there is nothing to play for but that. And Lawrence is still a real possibility with Gase around.
I think opposite. Well we can almost guarantee we will not win any games if we start over game 5. They would have to change on the go, so it would take weeks of losses to get there, so I think we fire gase now we may well lose out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Upon further reflection, I doubt that Douglas is tanking. That doesn't look like a move he would make even to add Lawrence or more draft picks. He has too much pride, and it wouldn't look so great to go 0-16 in his first full year as GM. In addition, Douglas is trying to establish a winning culture here. Unless the Johnsons, he and possibly Gase agreed to just take the hit this season, how is he going to do that if the team goes 0-16? Even if the Johnsons, Douglas and Gase are willing to take the heat, what about the players? If they suspect that the FO has decided to tank, that could make them very unhappy and not want to be here. It could totally undermine the changes that Douglas is trying to make. Even if they are planning to get rid of every single player on the roster that Douglas didn't draft or add via FA, what about those players? Do you think Becton et al would be happy going 0-16? I don't. I can think of several reasons why they might go ahead and fire Gase. One, if they are not tanking, they'd want to try to salvage the season, Sam, and other players. Two, even if their intent is tanking, unless they're convinced that keeping Gase will guarantee them the #1 pick, and they fear that making Williams interim might cause them to win several game and lose their shot at Lawrence, they may want to send a signal to the players, their fanbase, and the NFL that they're not going to accept this kind of horrible play. Going winless and looking totally inept is not a good look, and could cause FAs to not want to sign with the team in 2021. Three, if Gase isn't part of an agreement to tank and he realizes that's what they're doing, he could scream to the media. If he is included, then that means we're stuck with him for at least another year. That would have to be the payoff to get him to go along with a total tank job. I'd rather not have Lawrence and roll with Sam if getting Lawrence means that we have to keep Gase.
Just a point on how important coaching is! As much as I hate belecheat he is doing masterful job against KC tonight. Obviously KC more talented, and with Hoyer at QB, that is enough to not be competitive. But the game 6-3, chiefs shredded the ravens last week! Even with our lack of talent we might be 2-2 or 3-1 if belecheat was the coach, but we are 0-4, and not even a wiff of a competitive game. Just another testament how miserable gase is a coach! It is more than sad we go into games with 0 to no game plan on both sides of the ball! It’s not like belecheat had great drafts, because like Parcells not great in that area, but finding the “right” players. He always does more with less. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Unless he's rigid and inflexible, puts his relationship with Gase ahead of the team, or doesn't value offense, then I disagree that he's a moron. I could be wrong and he could be tanking, or his intent may have nothing to do with tanking. Covid could have, and probably did affect his intent/plans for this season. Once Mosley opted out and players started dropping like flies in TC, he may have decided that it was pointless and a waste of cap space and draft capital to make any other big moves. At that point, he knew this team wasn't going to the playoffs. He could have then decided to use this entire season to determine what Sam and the other young players can do,. If they develop and win 6 games, then he knows he's that much further ahead with the rebuild and has more keepers than he thought. If they don't, then he knows he has a lot more work to do. He could also be using it to see what kind of job Gase and the CS do in developing these players and whether last season's 6-2 run to end the season was solely a product of the easier schedule, and if Gase could build upon that and learn from his mistakes of last season. In a weird way, it's a win-win kind of scenario. If the team sucks and falls apart, and he has the #1 pick in his pocket, he either can take Lawrence or trade the pick for a bevy of picks with which to speed up the rebuild. He also has a pretty strong case to take to C. Johnson that Gase needs to go. If Sam and the young players rise to the occasion, do well and develop then he knows who can help the team going forward, has some players with experience, and he'll still be in pretty good draft position and has a lot of picks to use. If the team surpasses expectations, then he'll know that Gase and the CS are worth holding onto.
I'm on board with this line of thought. Gase was hired to be the head coach and right now he is doing a really crappy job of head-coaching. He's hyper-focused on the offense and the QB when he really needs to be leading the team and calling guys numbers on the sidelines when they screw up. If the offense was working maybe you could make the argument that Gase should keep running it, but it's a horror show at the moment. He can't keep burying his nose in the play sheet when the team is flaming out on both sides of the LOS. He needs to give the offense to somebody else and take a big step back and look at and make corrections in the state of the team as a whole. It's a normal thing for the HC to hand off play-calling duties (when those are in play in the first place which they mostly are not) to somebody else when the offense (or defense if he's a defensive play-caller) is stalling out on his watch. If nothing else it could give Gase some perspective on what is going wrong, because a lot is going wrong and it's not just on his side of the ball.
IMHO you are giving gase too much credit. There is NOTHING that supports the notion he is offensive genius. Or even that he is even competent offensive coach! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think I ever said Gase was an offensive genius or any other kind of genius at this point. The post above was just to suggest that maybe he get his freaking nose out of the play binder during games so he could actually see WTF was going on on the field and on the sideline around him.
Am watching the Packers game, and LaFleur just had 3 RBs on the field on a play. Gase seems to have a problem putting two on the field at the same time. The Packers are absent their top 2 WRs Davante Adams and Allen Lazard. So what do they do on their opening drive? On the first play Rodgers tries to go deep to their deep threat Valdes-Scantling. The 2nd play he hits their TE R. Tonyan for a 27 yard gain. Mix in a pass to Aaron Jones for 8 yards, a Jones run on the play with 3 RBs for 9 yards, another Jones run for 23 yards, a Jones run for no gain, then a pass in the flat to Jones for the TD. Gase couldn't have come up with that with those same players if someone held a gun to his head.
This is not new for him. There was a game last year where he was sitting by himself on the bench drawing up plays.
As you noted, Gase was hired to be the HEAD Coach. But somehow, after convincing Idiot #2 that he was highly qualified to be the HC (Ask Peyton! He'll vouch for me!), he subsequently sold Idiot #2 that it would be a really great idea if they hired a "Head Coach for the Defense" so that he, the Offensive Genius, could focus all his "genius" on the offense. How stupid does someone have to be to swallow that crap? If there was an equivalent Lombardi Trophy for stupidity the Johnsons would be a dynasty. They'd name the trophy the Big Johnson in their honor. Gase is NOT a good, or even marginally good, HC. And you can list all the great coaches who struggled before they finally got it, but if you look at that list you should notice one thing: they never "got it" with their first attempt, and most of them had to take a "hiatus" from being a HC before it clicked. But in Gase's case, I doubt he'll ever get it.
