We all know this is one of the worst Jet teams ever and by loosing to Denver improved our chances at 1 overall. No doubt the pick will be Trevor Lawrence with a new coaching staff and possibly new front office. What would Darnold be worth on the market to a team like Pitt, SF, Indy etc etc? I personally believe we would be lucky to get a 3rd pick at this point...
It’s very simple. They are all part of the Sam Darnold cult. In their eyes, Sam is a future hall of famer but Gase and company is holding him back from greatness. They refuse to see any of his faults. They can’t open their eyes and see Sam not throwing accurate passes and Sam flat out not even seeing open receivers that are right in front of him. These same folks couldn’t let go of Sanchez either and blamed everyone but him as well. These same fans think it’s the other players job to elevate the Qb even though you see all the other great QBs elevate the other players around him. A lot of folks don’t want to start over from scratch and will draw it out and hope and pray a miracle happens with the kid.
I'm not on the 'Keep Gase because he's a genius' train. I'm on the 'don't fire the coach just because he's the local whipping dog for all the Jets problems' train. I have no idea at all if Adam Gase can be a good head coach. I know right now he's not being a good head coach - which is where we were at game 4 last year also with similar injury and talent problems. It's troubling that Sam Darnold is regressing at this point and if that continues the odds are very good Gase gets fired at the end of the season and rightfully so. The biggest problem that Darnold has right now is that he doesn't really have chemistry with anybody but Crowder. He's not on the same page with the guys he is training with between games and that shows come game day. His picks have been throws into coverage where the receiver wasn't where he should have been if the two of them knew each other well. Throws to the back shoulder where the receiver just kept going. Throws to the sideline where the receiver ran a go instead of a curl. Throws across the middle where the congestion was high and the receiver was boxed out by the time the throw arrived. Whatever Gase has in his theoretical chest of offensive tricks the best thing he could pull out for Darnold right now is a way to make a quick connection with the talent around him. Like Elway Darnold clearly has the zip to complete those contested throws. The question is whether he and his receivers can get on the same page and make them completions. One of the troubling things about the loss to the Broncos is that Darnold threw 40+ passes *without* taking many risks. That suggests that the picks are starting to get into his head and for him playing it safe right now is not an option. Not if the Jets are going to score enough to win a few games.
Look around the league. None of the teams had preseason games and many have new faces who are succeeding. Stefon Diggs Justin Herbert I just watched George Kittle catch 15 balls tonight from some guys named Nick Mullins and CJ Beathard. Burrow Bridgewater Cam Plenty more. I don’t think it’s chemistry
How is anyone going to find out what Darnold has in him unless he has someone different working with him and calling the plays? Why waste the entire season with the status quo? Why drag the problem into next season? No one here has yet been able to justify, or even rationalize the initial hiring of Gase. His resume is one of failure and it's getting worse every week. Adam Gase is not now, nor ever has been, a good head coach. What is to gain by keeping him here? The sooner a change is made, the sooner the Jets find out what Darnold really is and can plan for the future. That's much more important to the future than winning a few games.
OMG the Jets would be so stupid to trade him to Pittsburgh or even Dallas. I wouldn't care how much they offer. Right now #1 pick easy. He's 23, recent top 3 pick with a style of play that = a long NFL career the only question is how high his ceiling is. We already know he's not a terrible QB. That would be giving him away cheap he's 23 if he gets into the right situation, plays into his late 30s-early 40s he still has a good 15 to close to 20 years of football left in him.
A number one? His age doesn't matter much. His draft position doesn't matter at all. His style of play can best be described as "unsuccessful," maybe "dangerous" - to himself. There's more than one question ahead - you could as easily ask "how low?" as "how high?" but still not know what he can be day in and day out. His record right now is that of a terrible QB; you may wish it wasn't but it's all there in black and white. You're projecting 15-20 years of work for a guy whose current performance doesn't warrant a roster spot on most teams next year. At least the franchise quarterback nonsense has disappeared for now but nobody knows if there's still something that could be resurrected with some decent coaching. Any talk of trade value is ridiculous to talk about until the value of keeping him is determined.
The Jets would be stupid to trade Sam even if the got Lawrence. Right now of all the recent high drafted QBs, who are the best 2? Mahomes and Lamar What do they have in common? They both were not thrown in and starting on day1. Not saying you cannot be successful starting immediately, but even sitting the first half of a rookie season at QB can be extremely beneficial to their development. Does anybody really think the Jets will be in a position talent wise to throw a rookie in and be successful next year?
I would think at worst Jets would be able to get a 2nd rd pick. I’d really love to see Sam end up in NO if we do indeed end up getting the 1st pick, SF would also be a great spot. Either way I’m sending him to the NFC, could see any of these teams having varying levels of interest. WFT Dallas Bears Lions Panthers Bucs NO SF I think there will definitely be interest as smart football people will see that he was in the worst situation for a QB in the league and see his potential post Jets/Gase.
I'm as big of a fan of Darnold as anyone, but these clips from Sabo are worrisome. The dude is flat out missing people and doesn't want to let it rip. It seems like he already predetermines where he wants to go with it before the snap and isn't even going through his reads anymore. Is that a Gase thing? Is that a lost confidence thing about not being able to read a D anymore? If we land the first pick I would have preferred to trade the pick and load up on talent and rock with Sam in 2021, but I'm not sure anymore...
Or........Sam Darnold has 26 more NFL starts at this stage in his life then Elway, Manning and Brady. If you're a rookie or a Veteran, you have to produce when you get the opportunity. The stretch of your argument is we could stick a 16 year old out there at QB and excuse him 7 years of sub-par play whilst we wait for him to reach maturity/the Elway/Manning/Brady bracket.
Depends on how the rest of the season pans out. If he can avoid becoming a pick machine then a team in the position of only needing competent QB management to compete might reach for him but I wouldn't be surprised with a 3rd or 4th at this stage although I would keep him around on his final (4th) year if we drafted a new QB so we can perhaps showcase him a little more to drive up value and maybe get lucky with a team that suffers a pre-season injury. I'd also expect a veteran in the Fitz/Josh mode to come in and be in SD and the rookies ear and going over the plays on the bench with them.
This post is on the money. If the general consensus is that he is gone after the season, what are we waiting for? Change everything up and see if something clicks with Sam. The best thing that can happen to this franchise is if Sam turns it around and becomes the guy we all want him to be.
I remember this thought process when the Jets replaced Fitzpatrick with Geno Smith. Many fans and reporters were calling for Hackenberg to play, and give him a shot because "you never know what might happen". I'm a realist. If the guy is good enough, he will play. Fans think they know better than the coach and GM who sees the player everyday. Only time it works that way in the movies. Aaron Rodgers earned his by outplaying Favre. Mahomes earned his by outplaying Smith. Deshaun Watson earned his by outplaying Savage. Before this season is over, Flacco will be the starting QB. My guess is after the Bills game.
