Yeah no QB coach, useless Loggins and Gase looking at his play sheet 24/7 it's really no surprise his footwork has not improved.

he just isnt a guy you want to sign to any kind of long term deal. its supposed to be figured out by this point. thats how the nfl works these days. i have to think that douglas has already moved on by not bringing in any real wrs for him and going with the build thru the draft mentality.

i honestly feel bad for guys that end up with the jets these days. its like the place good players go to die.

U all amaze me wasting all your energy on a columnist Manish that under no circumstances is going to make us a winning team. It's time for every one of U posters that your firepower should be directed on the persons responsible for this fiasco the Johnson Brothers who own the team. Until that is accomplished we will continue being a cellar dweller. U posters keep make up excuses but it is time for a realty check. The idiot brothers have owned the team for 15/20 years maybe more so the the question is in that period of time why have they not brought in quality HC quality HC & until those 2 things are accomplished the NYJs will continue to be the laughing stocks of the NFL

Yep. Can't grade a QB on wins and losses. It is a team sport and the Jets are a horrendous team. It's hard to fully evaluate Sam right now. You can't say he is a franchise QB, but you also can't say he is a bust and the Jets need to move on. Puts Joe Douglas in a tough spot, but he already knows he needs to improve the team around the QB position no matter what.

One thing about Sam that I didn't notice while watching the game but was very apparent when looking at some film, he's developed a very bad habit of dancing/bunny hopping after he steps back to pass. There were many instances where all he had to do was throw to a crossing receiver up the middle and he would have avoided many pressures. The one for example where he was body slammed for a sack and had to leave for a spell, there was a receiver wide open doing a cross route about 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. It was an easy flick of the wrist. Darnold is not seeing the field out there. You can't blame Gase for that. There were many other times in the Denver game where he overlooked wide open receivers. That is a serious problem.

DK Metcalf was drafted in 2nd and Tyler Lockett was drafted in 3rd.
That is not in any way shape or form close to what Sam has.
Greg Olsen, this year, is a former first round draft pick, All Pro and one of the best TEs in the league for a decade.

    Give it up.

I’m late to the party, but I will throw in my two cents.

Darnold is never going to be a top 10-15 QB in NFL. Here is why:

He doesn’t read the defense/the field

-He struggles to find the open receiver and frequently throws to people who are covered

-He holds the ball and locks onto receivers

His footwork stinks and hasn’t improved while working with Palmer

-That self sack on Thursday would likely not have happened if his feet were properly set/under him

-If you recall, this was one of his biggest knocks coming out of USC (He was called a “Cow on Ice”)

He doesn’t make the players around him better

-I get it...his supporting cast isn’t good, but great QBs make the players around them better.

-There are countless examples of great QBs making UDFA and late round picks into great players.

I don’t hate Darnold and I will continue to root for him, but consider me a skeptic from here on out. It doesn’t look like he will pan out.

He definitely has an issue with locking onto receivers. Feels like he stays on his first read for way too long. I feel like I never really see him go through progressions.

There could be a lot of reasons for that. My hope is that it’s being drilled into him by Gase and once he’s gone Darnold will start to feel a little less locked in to going to the exact player that a play is drawn up for.

I like Sam, I believe that he can be a very good QB. There are flashes of really good things, BUT he has a maddening habit of doing really boneheaded things. I know I expected to see less of those things in year 3. His supporting cast is AWFUL, and his HC and OC, whatever that idiot does, is certainly not helping Sam. Right now I am torn if they end up with the #1 overall to take TL or trade the pick...

I can blame Gase for having one of only three teams in the league that do not have a QB coach. Who else would I blame? If you can point out his shortcomings and how to face them why isn't a coach tied to him with a rope? It's a serious problem that is easy to address; then you can determine if it's fixable.

He really isn’t. I wanted to to include that in my write up, but there isn’t much to discuss. He isn’t very accurate period.

Enough kidding ourselves with the myth that Gase is a QB whisperer. He might have taken a hall of famer at the end of his career and created some short yardage plays to suit Manning style but that is all. Manning did the rest. He does not develop players, didn’t do shit for Tannahill and even less for Sam. He is the farthest thing from a QB coach you can get. Sam has raw talent but needed a lot more help that a bunch of chalk board short passes to get it together. I don’t want him near Sam anymore. Mac shit drafts with no OL help at all and Gase’s incompetence have absolutely destroyed any chance for Sam to grow.

Agreed which leaves the Jets in a very difficult spot. At the end of season 3 they will be unlikely to know equivocally that Darnold is their guy down to as you say the dumpster fire going on around him.

So where does that leave them? They either persist with him hoping that he turns it around in years 4 and 5 knowing they will have to pay him after his rookie contract is up.

Or they can draft another QB and reset with a new 4 year rookie contract and try and build the team properly around him this time so that in 3 years they will be able to make an equivocal call.

If they have a chance to grab a highly touted QB like Lawrence I think the choice is simple. If they don't then they can probably afford to give Sam his final year of the rookie contract to prove it and try and use the draft haul from the Adams trade and the cap space to at least give him some protection on oline and something to throw at. I would forget the defense this offseason and go all in trying to build up the offense regardless of what they do at QB.

You take Trevor Lawrence and don't look back. If the Jets ever want to build a good franchise they need to start adding studs and lots of them. Trading back and all the other cute shit never works for the Jets so take the sure thing. Lawrence is the prototypical new NFL QB. Big, strong arm and can run when needed. No brainer at 1.

If Russel Wilson had what Sam has, he would make it work
