The best thing is for this team to tank. get the #1 pick and trade it to build up the roster and around Darnold while giving Gase the ax. Let Darnold play out his last two years with a new coach and retooled roster. If Darnold ever figures it out - he's going to be not just good but deadly because of his uncanny ability to improvise while looking down the field. which simply means the potential is there. He'll be 25 years old in two years. The kid's a baby, least of my worries. oh FIRE GASE!
No, I am just telling the truth. I saw a lot of positives from Sam today despite the overall poor team performance.
Darnold at the post game press conference: "I'm not playing consistent enough to play well in this league." So, you are seeing positive things that Darnold isn't?
No, I agree. He has been inconsistent. I am just evaluating him as a QB of the future. I can see the potential is still there. He made some nice plays and throws today. He needs to do that for 60 minutes though.
He made a great play on the TD throw. What else did you see that was positive? He basically said he sucked and Gase said he was disappointed.
So, how long does he get to prove he can be the QB the majority of guys here thought he could when he got drafted? How do you see his fate changing if A) Gase remains, or B) Gase is gone at 0-4 on Friday?
I thought the offense looked a lot better to start the game. Throwing 3 interceptions (Including 2 Pick 6's) is obviously unacceptable. I just feel Sam can only do so much and I don't blame him as much as others do. He looked worse against Buffalo to me. That is obviously not a good stat line. And a 29 point loss is embarrassing. I was just saying I saw some positives from Sam today. Good question. I've said before, unless he completely flops in 2020, I would give him 2021 to prove himself. Improve the team around him with the cap space, draft picks, and a new Head Coach. I don't think it would change his fate too much either way as far as him being the Jets QB in 2021. He seems to like and respect Gase, so I don't know how he would feel or play without him. That's life though when you play terrible and this team has played terrible. I would love to see him without Gase the rest of the year. It would give the Jets a better chance to evaluate him because this Gase offense clearly is not working.
He needs to learn how to make the scripted/scheduled plays look as easy as he does the unscripted/unscheduled ones. He’s like a pool player that’s great a trick shots but struggle with the easy short & tap in shots.
Darnold's make or break game is coming up on Thursday. If he can't right the ship and up his game against a bad team like Denver, then he's not the guy and the Jets need to seriously look at moving on in the offseason.
While this is true, the 5th year option rules changed this off season and I think Sam would now be quite a bit more expensive if you take the option than he was previously. This being the case you could opt to not use the option and see how he plays in 2021, treating it as a prove it 1 year deal. Obviously though that means looking at extending him in season if he does well and that isn't without risks.
He's got 13 games to show that he can play smart with some degree of consistency. Otherwise, show him the door, along with Gase. This is horseshit, no more excuses
Thursday is literally the week before our IR skill players return. Getting those players back from IR can only increase Sam's trade value, if it comes to that. Sam hasn't played well, but he's been dealt the shittiest possible hand this year. He must at least be given a a chance to play consecutive games with some combination of a healthy Mims, Perriman, Crowder and Bell before we even consider doing anything drastic.
Unfortunately that’s not how it works. We have to decide to pick up Sam’s 5th year option THIS offseason. This is Sam’s make or break year and it’s starting to look more like a break than a make.
The biggest issue I see so far this year is his heads not moving, he’s not going through his progression. Not sure if it’s gase telling him to throw the first read, him not trusting the line to let him get off his first read or him not believing in anyone to get open.
Yea, it has been pointed out. That complicates things. I guess it will boil down to whether or not a comparable QB will be available at a similar rate.
Congrats on posting his stat line. I agree he played like crap but a stat line doesn't tell the tale. The dude is working with a 37 year old running back, both his tackles injured and scrubs in their place, and 3 practice squad caliber WRs in because our "starters" (who are really back-ups) are injured. Darnold needs to learn to not force the ball, because that early pick 6 and our defense's inability to stop a nosebleed forced Darnold to press due to being down so much, and he's with teammates that are unable to do so.
i dont agree with this - Trevor looks like a guy that elevates players. Why take a chance on missing on picks and paying Darnold. Would you want a guy like Tony Romo who, yea is good IF you build around him. Or a ELITE QB who just balls with whatever he has,
