Yep. If Sam could get muster just a little more confidence in his protection he could turn a corner. Plus whatever happened to rolling Sam out? I thought that was the big realization about improving his game from last season. He thrives rolling out and it throws the defense off. Gase cant even remember what we have already learned.
No I don't. I think his value is reflective of that though around the league. He has the it factor when it comes to bad arm angle throws, and he makes Favre-like throws when he moves around. But he's looked awful the first two weeks. And let's say we're on the position to move him at 2-14 with the #1 overall pick. That would mean teams are willing to give up multiple high picks for a kid that's 13-29 as an NFL starter. Don't think so man.
I've never said he would garner "multiple high picks", but that doesn't mean "he's damaged goods", implying he's beyond repair which seems to be what you're saying. And from the reports I've heard, he actually didn't look awful last week. But I really think you;'re underestimating the negative impact of Gase, not only on Sam and the playcalling, but on the players around him. It's exponential. Get rid of Gase and see a whole new QB and team. Or to put it another way: move Sam to a team with a good HC and see a whole new QB, and that's why his value isn't as low as you suggest.
I don't think he's necessarily beyond repair, but the rest of the league can probably make the case in any sort of trade negotiations that he is. I also believe in the kid enough to buy his jersey (the first I've bought since Curtis Martin retired). But at this current pace he's looking at 3,152 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 picks at 62% with the leagues worst offensive output. That production combined with the awful record (if we're in position to move him) leaves the only leverage we have as the fact that we picked him high and he was a really good college prospect in 2017. Apologies too didn't mean to imply you said that. I just think if we're looking to trade him at the end of the year, he and the team were awful and his value, in our eyes, is less than we think. Tannehill was better with and without Gase and they just released him.
If he does this given the circumstances (assuming Gase remains as HC all season), he should get an award! Go back and watch tape on him from college and his first two seasons and you'll see talent that is uncommon. Yes, he's unpolished and makes mistakes, but those can be fixed or worked around with the right coaching, but you can't coach arm talent and a feel for the game. You CAN screw it up with bad coaching however, which is what Gase is doing. Sam is no Mahomes (and I'll spare you my HOF induction speech I prepared for Patrick before he was drafted), but nonetheless he has natural ability like Mahomes and a few others - no not as much, but in that ballpark. IDK if Lawrence has Mahomes-level ability, but if he does, then of course the Jets should take him if they can, but that doesn't mean it reduces Sam to chopped liver and the Jets will be forced to take a lowball offer for him. As I said, even if the Jets get Laawrence, I'd keep Darnold unless I got a really god deal for him because he would provide great competition for the rookie, and maybe even beat him out that first year. Worst case, he gets beat out by Lawrence, but would be able to come off the bench and deliver quality play.
I totally disagree. Football is the ultimate team sport. One player can't elevate a whole team when the coaching is horrific, play calling is terrible, and there is little or no talent around him. IMO anyone that would consider Sam a bust after this season, doesn't know anything about human nature or football.,
Seriously? Making adjustments can take time, especially for a QB who was battered like Sam was last season. He didn't have any mini-camps this summer, no OTAs, no preseason, has a rookie LT, and an OL that is still in the process of gelling, lousy play calling, and crap for talent at WR. Expecting him to adjust and ignore all those factors just isn't dealing with reality. No, we weren't playing the 2014 Seahawks secondary last week, but Sam was playing with a scared game plan, one of the worst HCs in the history of the NFL, and probably the worst WR corps in NFL history, but I guess none of that matters. SMH
It's because some Jets fans are obviously so negative, pessimistic and cock sure of their opinions, that they can't see any alternative to their perspective. It's sad. I really feel sorry for them.
Of course it matters. But the kid didn't even give any of these plays a chance to develop. Immediately throwing the ball to the flat on a slant/out pattern on 3rd and 9 against a 5 man rush in man coverage is a bad quarterback play. I don't really care if Adam Gase or Adam Sandler called the play. There were more opportunities to make plays in that game but he didn't try to make them. Go back and look at the completions chart. We didn't throw the ball over the middle practically the entire game. It's not just always about the playcalling even though it's predictable and bad. Players can also have bad games ya know.
You're discounting that Darnold has been coached to do that, to not take chances, to not overrule the play call of the "genius HC". You're suggesting that he could simply decide on his own to go to the next option - which I'm sure Gase tells him to do, but when Gase is also criticizing him, and telling him he's not allowed to make his own decisions, that's a very mixed message. I agree that Darnold should be more assertive and frankly tell Gase to piss up a rope, but that's not his nature. Again, not every player is cut from the same cloth, and it's up to the CS to adopt to the player, or work with him to get him to change. But what Gase is doing with his mixed messaging is simply sowing more confusion and doubt.
I'm not discounting the fact that the coaching is garbage. I'm discounting the fact that he was coached to throw all 12 of his 21 completions at or behind the LOS as if they were the only routes available on the play call. Or to throw the ball before he even completes his drop back. A short passing attack as a game playing isn't solely throwing underneath out routes. I don't even think Gase is that dumb. I just think players are somewhat responsible for their own production. Scared gameplans or not, the player himself (whose greatest strength is supposed to be forcing balls into tight windows and moving around to complete big plays) didn't make many plays in either of the first two weeks. The kid has shown flashes of Brett Favre and it's honestly who he reminded me of college in terms of play style. He looks like Geno at times (interprets every play as an all out blitz and/or under a lot of pressure). Part of that is likely the bad offensive line play he's faced most of his career. But at some point that gets baked in and is irreversible. I'm scared that's happening here. I'd rather him take some chances then be scared to throw the ball so he dumps it off to the sidelines at all times.
Very well said NC. IMO that article makes little sense. The top two reasons used in the article were: Gase sucks and Sam has a lot of talent. Daaaaa, as if we didn’t know. If we draft the top QB we should first and foremost fire Gase and probably keep Sam unless the trade is a block buster in which case you still fire Gase and trade Sam for a truck load. Of course that makes the article third reason nonsense as well, because we will not trade Sam on the cheap for all the reasons you described. I think to trade or not to trade Sam has to be prefaced by a huge if, if and only if we have selected a new coach and he or she sees the need to go in a different direction and many teams are knocking on our front door for Sam. Our problem is not who to draft and keep, our challenge is to find a coach that puts Sam or any other QB in a position to excel.
A bad Coach can ruin any old or new QB I still have 50 per cent of me believing in Sam D But it's not 100 per cent anymore
I think what is most surprising here is not the difference of opinion but that some guys are still sure Darnold is the second coming of Joe Montana and others think he's the spawn of Sanchez; there's not a whole lot of middle ground.. We even have one guy expressing both scorn and sympathy for those who disagree with him. I elect to look at it as we haven't seen the right combination of opportunity, skill and coaching to make a valid determination.
I don't think it's that crazy to want to see more out of Darnold, while also acknowledging his shitty situation. The almighty Jeff Driskel dragged the Broncos back last week against arguably the best defense in the league with a pair of stud bookend edge rushers and no Courtland Sutton for half the game. We faced the 49ers B-squad and couldn't get the game within two scores.
I bought a Darnold as well. I have a truly pathetic Jets Jersey collection and this situation might make it even worse. My first Jets jersey, Coles, is still my go to. I’m thankful that it’s still in perfect condition after all these years.
If we have the 1st pick the opposing question needs to be asked what can we get for trading the Trevor pick, keeping Sam and hiring a competent coach. The draft haul for Trevor could rival the RG3 haul.
Sam needs to somehow survive the next 14 games...a big haul in a trade back for the no.1 pick and JD builds the new New York Jets. To be honest, Sam, you'd be better off tapping a few freshers and getting mono again (at least pretending to). It can't hurt your development any more than playing for Gase.
