I agree, but you know what the Johnsons will do: make Gase get rid of Patten Oswalt, and then hire Smith to be his OC, ensuring the WORST possible outcome.
I like him from the standpoint that he looks like the type of guy to tell the players to shut the fuck up and hit someone. Very short resume though (two years as a coordinator).
GREAT article! Thanks for sharing. If, Blessington is correct, it pretty much sold me on Smith, at least as a strong candidate that the Jets should definitely speak with, if not the actual new HC. The only thing that concerns me is that this is only his 2nd year as an OC. Is he ready to tackle being a HC?
Don't get your hopes up. We'll hire Matt Patricia after Vince Wilfork gives the Johnsons a call and sings his praises.
Either him or Bienemy are my choices and I don't even think I have a close option 3. Smith literally took what everyone thought was garbage in Tannenhill and turned him into one of the top 10 QBs in the league atm. I think that stems down from the HC because Vrabel comes off that way as well IMO.
Brian Daboll is an early candidate for me. So far Josh Allen looks well developed, and he doesn’t have an offensive mind over him who you can point to as the reason like Bieniemy with Reid. Prying him away from the Bills would be a win.
That's my concern with Bieniemy. We don't know how much he is responsible for the development of Mahomes and the juggernaut of an offense they have.
I agree. The other issue would be that he's used to running an offense with Mahomes, Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, and Damien Williams. Would he be able to adjust with lesser talent here? I also wonder how Reid's offense is in terms of simplicity/complexity. The one thing I liked about Rex when he started was his idea of KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). I like systems where the players don't have to think a lot, where the coordinator adjusts based on the talent he has on hand, and where the system is easy enough that the players can learn it quickly and just use their natural talent/ability. IMO it's easier to find fits for those kinds of systems, than it is complex systems that require a lot of mental acuity.
Daboll would be another good candidate. Right now, Lincoln Riley is my top choice among any type of candidate (NFL vs collegiate), but Smith is becoming my #2. Daboll or Bieniemy would be #3, and the other #4. I don't think Shaw will leave Stanford, and I don't think Harbaugh would come to the Jets. Actually, none of them might be willing to come.
To be fair, a good organization doesn't have to simplify the systems because they don't draft morons who can't figure it out. And if they do, the morons don't last long. Rex's defenses were not simplified because he had players who understood it and players that were leaders that could enforce it (Bart Scott, David Harris, etc.). The only reason the offense was stupified is because Sanchez kept throwing picks in the flats because he couldn't identify a damn Cover 2 for his life.
It's sad that everything is an extreme to you with no middle ground! Just because a system is simpler doesn't mean that it's "stupefied." In the case of Sanchez, yes, it was because Sanchez was/is stupid, and never should have been drafted in the first place. I think Rex knows more about his defensive system than you do. He called it "simple" and I'll accept his opinion.
By the end of this year Daboll will have 7 years of NFL OC experience. He was also the TE coach under Belichick for 3 years as well as QB coach/Co-OC for a year under Nick Saban. He has been QB coach in the NFL for 2 years along with defensive assistant, offensive assistant, and WR coach at different times under Belichick. Why I like Daboll best as of right now: -Offensive Background w/ Defensive Crosstraining -Multiple Years under Belichick -OC/QB Coach under Saban -Multiple Stints as OC as Learning Experience. -Developed a very raw Josh Allen and built an offense around his skillset. (Most Important) -Never been given an HC Opportunity -No Offensive Mind to take credit over him in Buffalo.
Rex calling a Defense "simple" likely has some similarities to Einstein calling advance calculus "simple." I know that's a bit of an exaggeration but you get the point. Rex's D had tons of exotic blitzes which needed to be run in synchrony.
