I'm not ready to jump ship on Sam. This was the first game of the season, against the favorite to win the Division, with no preaseason games. He's still just 23 and the Bills game was the first time he has truly played at full speed and been hit since last December.

If he looks like this for the next three weeks (all against teams that appear to be better than the Jets), I'll agree he's been ruined by this franchise. Until then, this is just one data point.

I love how fans always use the excuses that they are “ruined by this franchise”. Most of these QBs go other places and continue to be awful. This franchise may not give the QBs the best supporting cast but most of the QBs that can’t make it here just flat at aren’t that good and its not a crime to admit it. Sam needs to step up this year. He left a lot of plays on the field Sunday. Nows his time to take the next step and make the players around him better.

Have you ever hired a talented candidate who worked at a shitty company previously? It takes a lot of effort on the part of both employee and employer to break bad habits and banish bad assumptions, sometimes it takes many years. And, in addition to all that, their mistakes can cost you a ton of money along the way.

That's how it is in civil engineering anyway, I don't have any NFL experience.

I love stats. They can tell so many different stories, even ones that contradict each other.

How great is that QB class looking now?

    Baker
    Darnold
    Allen
    Rosen

Aside from Lamar which nobody really had as a top 10, the rest will probably never amount to much of anything.
Allen looking the best of the rest, but he still can’t throw, he is not putting up the numbers he did Sunday against anybody else.

We were all debating mostly between Baker, Sam and Rosen. Turns out it didn’t really matter cause they all suck.

The truth lies somewhere between what both of you said I think. Sam needs to elevate players and play better. His supporting cast still isn't good but his line should be much better this year and it's a massive year in terms of his development.

Starting the game off with four out of five of the first five drives being 3 + outs is inexcusable and on both the coach and the quarterback (other drive had 1 first down and 5 plays). The QB needs to will that team to a couple first downs and we wouldn't have been in such a mega hole. Once again though, we're losing first down and it's fucking everything up.

Darnold has the potential to be a Top 7 QB in this league

But he needs weapons at WR to do so

He can’t elevate mediocre WRs like Favre or Peyton, and that’s perfectly okay

    Most QBs can’t do that

Weakest WR corps in the league, by far

    Our NY Jets

They must draft a WR in the 1st round next year, even if they have to trade down to do it

Hope Sam doesn’t decide to leave after next year due to the poor front office support and lack of weapons

Watch the Pats pick him up...

And win 13 games his first year with Belichick...

People need to realize is that what makes a QB successful is the OL. Sam was running for his life out there. Other than Becton, what has changed? One thing JD goofed on was not doubling down on selecting another lineman early in the draft. This is looking more like a total blow-up of a team rebuild than ever before. Poor Sam.

Aaron Rodgers never had the best receivers or line, Tom Brady never had the best receivers. An elite qb doesn't make an excuse that they have a below average line or that they have below average receivers. See my examples above. Trevor Lawrence has the ability to make everyone better around him. He has way more talent than Donald and is actually a leader. For those of you who want Sam back and think we should trade or pass on Lawrence to stay with Sam are crazy.

Sam looked pretty good last night. The offensive line didn't really do that bad of a job. Ballage should never be asked to pass block again.

He faced some pressure but he wasn't under siege. All NFL quarterbacks are going to face some pressure, guys. The perfect pocket doesn't exist for entire games.

The alarming thing is the play he got slammed that @BrowningNagle brought up in the other thread. Sam's scared to throw over the middle if it's not one of those four yard stop routes. He can't throw a slant at all (missed Cager and almost lead Hogan into a hospital pass/interception). The Hogan slant was an awful throw that Troy Aikman tried to say was a great play by the corner. It was six feet in front of Hogan and he had to dive to break it up.

He hit a couple deep crosses (the jumping catch to Crowder which ended up on the sidelines and Jeff Smith play action roll out), but other than that it looks like he's scared to throw in front of linebackers and safeties.

Exactly. Some of you continue coming up with excuses for Darnold because the Jets don't have the likes of Randy Moss on their team. Brady used to make players that no one had heard of look like Pro Bowl caliber stars. The same can be said about Brees, Rodgers and a bunch of other elite QBs. Darnold is average at best, which makes him a bust considering that he was #3 overall.

I'd like to see what would have happened if Joe Flacco was out there for an extended period. Putting any QB behind that line = FAIL. Maybe it's coaching , whatever the case but Sam is running for his life out there. The players and names change but the results are the same. Flacco is an established QB that has put his team in the playofs. Should the Jets try him? He'll been on a stretcher before long.

I dont agree that any QB would fail behind our oline. Arizona has a worse line than the jets according to pff and Murray isn't failing. Cincinnati also has a worse line than the jets and Joe Burrow isn't failing.

I disagree that the line didn't do that badly last night. It wasn't last year bad but it was shaky a lot of the time. I agree Ballage was terrible. He missed his block on multiple blitzes. In fact, I don't know if we picked up a blitz the whole night. I'm down on Sam but I'm not sure Trevor could have done anything more last night.

At this point EVERY position on offense is a problem, which now sadly include our TEs. Add an offense by Gase that we dont have the talent to execute and no QB would get very far. Even Peyton Manning.
