Some typos and spelling mistakes just change the meaning entirely... Not that what you meant to write is wrong.
I'll preface this by stating that I am aware of the YEARS of mediocrity and horrible play this franchise has produced. I am aware that this is becoming a continuous case of chasing our own tail, but what is the next step? Continue the rebuild with Joe Douglas. I said it before and I'll say it again, I have a very good and different feeling about Joe Douglas. I think he is the GM we have needed for a long time and so far he has made me very happy in his first year. For years this franchise pushed along with horrible signing after horrible signing at the upper management level. It all starts at the top. If you have a GM that has HORRIBLE drafts and makes bone headed moves in free agency, the result will be what the Jets have been for the last 10 years. This past year has been refreshing, to say the least. Our entire offensive line was redone. We purged the roster of "me first" players. We have much more cap friendly deals in place. We drafted quality players at areas of need. There is still a lot that needs to be proven, but the immediate impressions are comforting. Reports are that Becton looks awesome, Davis looks awesome, Perine looked awesome before his injury yesterday, Mann might end up a legitimate starting punter, and Bryce Hall could be a high talent starting corner. Mims is still up in the air with his injury. That's A LOT of promise in the first draft of the Joe D era. We have a lot of draft capital going into the next two years and I would imagine steps will be taken to get more playmakers and a pass rush in the next year. The next step is to continue hope that Joe D is the guy we have needed. So far, I have a lot of hope with him in charge. The rebuild and change can not happen overnight. It's been one offseason, let alone less than one year. I know "patience" is the most hated word in Jets history, but that's all we have to go on right now.
Daniel Jeremiah hinted that he expects the Jets to add outside playmakers next offseason and this year was mainly about trying to fix the offensive line. To be honest, I think we should be structuring this season’s offense to mainly rely on short, easy completion passes (similar to recent Cheatriot teams). With our outside WRs lacking experience and health, we actually have one of the better line-ups of slot/TE/RB reception makers in the NFL. Crowder and Hogan are disciplined, intelligent route runners and could really excel with Sam. Finding the seams and holes between linebackers and working against the lesser corners, both could rack up lots of completions. Herndon, Griffin, Brown and Wesco are all capable of important 5-7 yard pick ups to keep the sticks moving. Bell, Gore and Perine are all dangerous out of the back field, Bell especially as a match-up nightmare. So, an efficient dink & dunk style of play should be our goal to help maintain possession and keep the offense on the move. Longer offensive possessions are a must fix, as it completely changes the game dynamic in your favour. The red zone could prove a tricky area, with a lack of height. But if Gase uses our slots, TEs and backfield creatively enough, it should mean our offensive drives improve from last year.
We tried to play this way last year as well. Long drives keep the defense rested. This style of offense means discipline one off-sides call and kill a drive very easily. Brady and Manning were/are great at this style offense because they do not make mistakes. We will see if Sam can do the same on a 10-15 play drive.
This only works if you can run the ball and protect it. As the poster said above me, we sort of tried this. The problem with this offense is that it usually also requires a lot of third down conversions and a lot of plays. The more plays you run, the more susceptible you are to turnovers. I think we'll end up somewhere in the middle of this strategy. Inexperience is one thing, but we have a lot of raw speed if the receiving corps every gets healthy. Perriman, Mims and Moncrief are all burners. So it could be a stretch play action deep style offense complimented by a ground game and Herndon/Crowder underneath. The outlook isn't that grim if we can get some guys back healthy.
We tried it with the second worst offensive line in football. I think this has some merit and would be a logical approach for this offense with a better line, which is what Douglas hoped to have achieved this offseason. Hard to say this was tried and it didn't work when our line couldn't stop a nosebleed.
Yeah definitely. It was a clusterfuck early in the season, but there was a commitment to adding tightends, running more bootlegs, running screens and receiver screens and shallow crossing routes as the line, while still awful, stabilized with some continuity. If the line is greatly improved, the playbook opens up. I'd actually rather see a vertical passing game than a short attack. Let the speedy receivers get down field if Sam has time. It'll open everything up. Crowder by himself naturally creates a short passing game (partly because he's limited, largely because he's really good underneath). He and Herndon/Griffin/Bell should feast down below. You need something to draw defenders deeper into their sets for that short game to be effective though. And that's where the vertical speed on the outside comes into play.
For sure! The only problem is, our deep threat is a rookie battling a hamstring injury LOL! I think getting Herndon back is going to be HUGE for Darnold. I would not be surprised if Herndon finishes with 700+ yards this year if he stays healthy.
Herndon has the potential to be the top weapon on this team. We're banking that he is who we think he is. Fingers crossed eh! Sent from my SM-G610Y using Tapatalk
I agree with you to a large extent regarding short passes being perhaps the best option for this season, but height is not a problem with our WRs and TEs. Yes, Crowder and Berrios are only 5'9, but look at the heights of our WRs and TEs below. WRs Perriman 6'2" Mims 6'3" Cager 6'5" Campbell 6'4" V. Smith 6'3" Hogan 6'1" Montcrief 6'2" Malone 6'3" J. Smith 6'1" Chesson 6'2" TEs Herndon 6'4" Griffin 6'6" Wesco Kaufusi 6'6" R. Travis 6'6" Brown 6'5" RBs Bell 6'1" Gore 5'9" Perine 5'11" Mims, Perriman, V. Smith, J. Smith, Campbell, and I think maybe Montcrief are all fast as well. We should be able to have some success with longer routes.
One easy way to add more "weapons" is to make sure the ones you've got are working. Every year, the injury bug takes down a ton of Jets and for really long times. Certainly, some of that's avoidable. But there's no reason for the Jets to take a Mets-like approach and wait for an ownership change. JD and friends have to figure out what other teams (and the lease injured players) are doing, and incorporate some of those best practices. TL;DR: Excellent conditioning, medical, and health monitoring staffs can be weapons, too.
I'm sure your new sensitive diva of a weapon is going to be super happy with his new landing spot when he sees balls like this sail over his head in single coverage.
From what we have seen and heard so far, I don’t expect to see Cager, Campbell, Malone, Chesson, etc to be on the roster or to play much of a part. With Mims and Perriman carrying injuries, that is why I said about lack of size outside. Let’s hope all are back fit in the next week and we can get some confidence in the tall/fast guys. Fingers crossed!
Herndon might be the most talented player on roster incl when Adams was here.He just hasnt been able to stay on the field
Yeah, second Sanchez season, Sanchez was lights out. Unfortunately did notary, but we still made championship game on rbs, ol line, and D. Oh and special teams. 2015 wasn’t bad camp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don’t like the dynamic of Gase helped hire JD! But we probably start slow, wr corps not good. And teams will load the box. Like last year. Tougher schedule as well. Hope Gase is gone by mid season... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
