I mean I'll take my chances with Sam making plays having time and shitty receivers than no time and great receivers. It's not really as if the position wasn't addresses either. 3 out of the top 4 guys are out with an injury right now. It's not like we went into camp with Jeff Smith as the projected #1.
You can't assume Sam is going to have time. At absolute best, this OL was going to be above average. With no preseason and a wonky training camp and a really tough schedule, they are going to be struggling for the first few weeks, maybe more. And on that note:
You're right. You can't assume anything. However if we have the 17th best offensive line in the league this year, the line is ten times the offensive line Sam's ever had as an NFL quarterback. That's not above average either. Have some faith, bub. Hogan was added. He's not a world beater but he's a professional receiver. Crowder is good at what he does. And if we get either Mims or Perriman back in a week or so we're in OK shape.
I posted it last week, I think in this thread, that the 8 teams with the worst OLs in the league all had at least one 1000 yard receiver, some of them multiple... except the Jets who had no one over 900 yards. And the lowest ranked passing offense was 19th. "It doesn't matter who he is throwing to if he doesn't have time" is an outdated battle cry. If you have good receivers that can make plays, you are going to be ok. I'm not saying ignore the OL, I'm saying we have a bigger problem at WR right now than we had on the OL last year.
We only follow the Jets, so I can't tell if every team is having these daily injuries, or if the Jets are truly cursed. Hopefully none are too serious though.
Poor Anthony Cioffi. Signed in February, cut a week or so ago, just brought back, now cut again. https://www.newyorkjets.com/news/jets-sign-rb-pete-guerriero-waive-s-anthony-cioffi The Jets have signed RB Pete Guerriero and waived S Anthony Cioffi. Guerriero, 5-10, 190, was not drafted in April after leading the FCS with 1,995 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 298 carries this past season for Monmouth. Guerriero, a Lyndhurst, NJ native, finished fourth in Hawks history with 3,974 rushing yards and his 239 total points is third in school annals. Guerriero, who also ran track at Momouth and won MAAC Outdoor Championship in the 100m and 200m, returned kicks for the Hawks. He averaged 29.9 yards per return and scored one touchdown. Cioffi first signed with the Green & White Feb. 13. He was recently released and brought back Aug. 22. The first-year pro signed with the Raiders in 2017 as an undrafted free agent before a stint with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League.
The other day, I read in an article that these types of soft tissue injuries are to be expected with no mini-camp, OTAs, etc. I don't know how knowledgeable the author is or how accurate his statement may be, but I think our strength and conditioning coach needs to have our players stretching more, doing yoga, pilates, or ballet. This is just crazy! If other teams aren't having this problem, then we're really screwed, and it is definitely a sign that further changes need to be made with our strength and conditioning program.
I'm going to choose to be hopeful about this and look at it as a positive. I think Perriman will be fine as he seems to have chemistry with Sam already. This is giving Hogan a chance to get in sync with the offense and Sam, and has helped Cager. Hopefully, Cager's injury isn't serious, and Mims will be back in a day or two, and can quickly pick up the offense and develop chemistry with Sam.
The big issue to me is it seems like no other team is having this kind of issue. Then go back to last season where we lead the league in injuries. At some point it’s not just a coincidence. The entire staff has to take a deep dive into what the problem is and how they are a part of it.
