Down to 209 LBS. (From around 276 mind you ) Drinking alcohol only one night a week which is either Friday or Saturday. This week it will be Saturday. Beer is just too much work for me now. Seriously planning to abandon it and switch to either Bourbon or Scotch. I am only a beer drinker and occasional wine. So far I have found Scotch/Bourbon too heavy for my taste. If I am looking to substitute beer with Scotch on occasional nights, what is a smooth Scotch/Bourbon? Not looking anything cheap or anything super expensive. Chime in folks.
Unfortunately it’s not that simple, there are so many different levels of Whiskey that you will only make the right choice after trying different aged Whiskey. It also gets expensive as Whiskey is not for drinking like water, it’s meant to be drunk in small quantities. I personally like Bushmill 10 year aged single malt Whiskey that I use to mix drinks. The more it’s aged the more expensive it is but the better it tastes.
To be more clear. I spend around $60 a month on beer. What is a good substitute bottle of Whiskey/Bourbon that will last me a month in that range?
You should do very well in that range, unless the import charges are silly. For example, Bushmill's, as mentioned by @Red Menace above is lovely. Their standard whiskey is nice, I prefer their Black Bush, which is about £30 in the UK. I picked up a 10 yo Jura whisky, sherry casked, for £25, which is very pleasing. You might want to try getting a tasting set, see what casking you like, sherry, port, whatever, do you like smokey, peaty? Don't get hung up on single malt either, some blended are really nice. Also, your tastes will change over time, so that's a nice journey to be on. Finally, in Scotland it's whisky, in Ireland whiskey.
If the scotches and Bourbons you've tried don't satisfy you, why not try vodka instead? Both scotch and bourbon are more often had with nothing but maybe a little ice or water or club soda; vodka with almost any juice or mixer and you can stretch it to last longer by using more mixer, and drink less. And juice is good for you!
As with anything else Brook, you get what you pay for. There's cheaper versions of both Whiskey and Bourbons but they come with impurities which more often than not, present a harsh bite to the taste. For whiskey, I would probably go with what's referred to as a single malt. They're more expensive but in the end, your stomach and your head the next day will thank you. Names would be GlenLivet, GlenFiddich, Jamisons and others. usually they'll say anywhere from 10 to 25 year old depending on price. The older, the more expensive and of course, the better. Personally, I'm a bourbon man although in my younger years I did drink Scotch. I prefer Makers Mark 46 or even the higher level bourbon depending on price. Jack Daniels makes a Gentleman Jack that's pretty good as well. They also put out a single barrel version as does MM. You can tell those by the price too. Knob Creek is 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume) so I would probably steer clear especially if you're not a regular bourbon drinker. Angel's Envy isn't bad. In the medium price range there's Woodford Reserve, Jefferson's, 1792. Woodford Reserve is probably the best of that group. Jim Beam also makes bourbon so you can always try that brand too. In the end, you'll find a brand of either Scotch or Bourbon that will appeal to you. One last piece of advice, never drink on a empty stomach and if you start to feel sick, Ginger Ale works best. The cheaper the liquor, the worse the hangover.
In that price range: Scotch - Monkey Shoulder Irish - Tullamore Dew Bourbon - Jack Daniels. (technically not bourbon, but that's splitting hairs). Couple of other points. Anything much over 80 proof is likely to give you a pretty decent headache the next day. And stay the fuck away from vodka unless you are a lesbian.
Thanks D. Not interested in Vodka or Gin or Tequila. They are cocktail drinks. Now, if I get permission from wifey and spend more than $60 a bottle what are some brands you and my Grandpa @Cman65 would recommend. Just checked. Gentlemen Jack and Single Barrel and Makers Mark are in that range. What is one step above than these if I go to $100 a bottle range? My limit for a month will be one bottle a month of course.
So if you're looking for something for sipping rather than for mixing do not underestimate the power of rum. I'm not talking about Bacardi or Captain Morgan or anything like that but a medium length aged dark rum. El Dorado 15 years is one that you can't really go wrong with and you can get a bottle for forty or fifty bucks. And yes, you can drink something like that all year round.
Well I’m a cheap fuck, but there’s plenty of good stuff at those price points. I don’t know what a bottle of Middletons Irish goes for these days, but it was 100 bucks when I turned forty. Ive gotten burned with scotch at that level though. Much more acquired taste than bourbon or Irish. I’d try a dram at a bar before I committed to scotch there. Johnny Walker Platinum is one I like, but tastes vary wildly here. EDIT. Per the N.H. liquor authority Middletons is $160 a bottle. Probably $250 in northern jersey. But we’ll worth it. Fun story, I came home from work one day after I got the birthday bottle and caught my gf about to put an couple of ounces into some pie she was baking. Nearly a domestic violence incident.
