Off to another rough start with injuries--I raised the point of our training staff last year and everyone beat me up for it. Still think this is an area we have overlooked. Already down quite a few guys....
I know, you know, that I knew we had two picks and it was a question designed to suggest we have not got enough first-round picks to sort out all of our problems but again I know you knew that.
This was always likely to be a training camp with soft tissue injuries just because of the lack of minicamps etc. I'll kind of look around the league and see if it is as common as I expect it to be.
Actually, only the head was "fired" and he is still working for the Jets as a consultant. His assistant is now the Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Odd....i know he'd been there awhile. Jets tell him he was the problem for Jets leading the league for players on IR last year?......but then not really telling him he was the problem by keeping him as a consultant.....
I honestly could not tell that by the way you worded it. I mean I kind of assumed that you knew considering it’s the biggest trade we’ve made outside of the Darnold trade in like a decade. Either way, first rounders aren’t the only way to fill out your team. I would argue that the best teams fill out their rosters in the middle round and by identifying good fit in free agency. Those middle rounds, it seems like there were a bunch of good receivers to be had and we passed on one for a back up quarterback that wasn’t even all that good in college. Those are the kinds of things that haunt bad teams. Something we know plenty about.
I mean at the point of the 4th round it's about value and I'm not really going to get up in arms over a 4th round type WR, someone like Johnson that went to TB (believe he was a 4th/5th rounder) over a QB. Because that's where some criticism lies with JD as he could have went WR instead of a developmental QB. But if we are sitting there thinking that a 4th round WR is the difference between Sam succedding and failing, well I have some news for you. There were so many holes on this roster left from previous GM's that there was no way JD was able to attack them all in one offseason. I think he did a damn good job of finding guys that dropped due to health concerns but who had a high draft grade when they were healthy. Guys like Bryce Hall, he was a fringe 1st round CB before the leg injury. Zuniga I believe was a 2nd round talent. Ashtyn Davis was rated one of the top safeties in the draft. So you draft based upon need but also where the draft board lies. It seems that Morgan has the arm talent to have been a higher pick but he had red flags on tape. But if the scouts feel he maybe a potential starting QB, you suddenly can have Sam insurance or if Morgan somehow proves to be an adequate or good starter, that's either a trade chip to acquire picks in the future or you may have your future QB in him.
Even if Morgan just becomes a solid career backup QB for the Jets, it will provide stability and consistency at the most important position. I'm tired of the procession of bad QBs the Jets have had over the years, be they over-the-hill has beens, draft busts, or never weres. I can understand posters taking issue with not drafting a second WR in the draft. I was one of them, and still am to some extent, but am willing to give JD the benefit of the doubt. I can see where he may have thought that none of the WRs after Mims were as good as the players he took at other positions. If so, I wouldn't have wanted him to reach for WRs who weren't that good over better players at other positions that were needs on the team. I can even understand questioning taking Morgan, but I agree with your point that a 4th or 5th round WR was not going to make or break Sam or this team. Unless both Mims and Perriman blow the roof off this season, I think it does have to be the top priority next offseason in both the FA and the draft, meaning that at least one mid-level FA WR is signed, and either one of the #1 picks is used on a WR or their 2nd rounder and one of the 3rd rounders must be used on the WR position. If Herndon doesn't stay healthy or have an excellent year, then TE must be a high priority as well. If they use the other 1st round pick on a RT or Edge, fine, but even if both Mims and Perriman have a great season and the Jets re-sign Perriman, I think the Jets need to add at least 2 WRs if not 2 WRs and a TE next offseason.
Jets WR is tricky... But I think the offense is much better overall vs last year. Last year we had Enunwa, R. Anderson, Crowder, and no Herndon... Sam D was playing under a new system, and a poor oline. Bell was our RB but had not played competitive Fball for a year. This year fans are talking abt Perriman, Mims, but forget that Crowder is our most valuable WR, and Herndon will be starting. Sam D having the same system, with and improved Oline should prove to be huge step in the right direction. I do think Bell will do much better knowing the offense, and having better run blockers. The offense unit is not going to scare anyone on paper, but their is plenty of potential at all positions. I'm going to say this offense is a top 15 unit vs a bottom 15 unit. Why? I'm excited to see what a healthy Sam can do in a familiar system, with a improved Oline, and improved Receivers. 2019 vs 2020 Crowder, Enunwa, Anderson, R. Griffin vs Perriman, Mims, Crowder, Herndon. I'll take the 2020 group 19 Sam D, Nobodies vs 20 Sam D, Flacco... I'd take Sam D, Flacco in year 2 of the same system with a better Oline. 19 Bell, Montgomery vs 20 Bell, Gore Perine... Again i have to go with the 2020 unit. Bell, and Gore understand the game, and can share valuable knowledge with each other and esp the rookie Perine. The Coaching staff, Coordinators remain same, so the offense flow, continuity should much better. I know this may seem optimistic for Jet fans, but I definitely think we have a better team that can surprise a lot of ppl.
Hopefully Mims gets back on the field asap, he cannot afford to lose too many days of practice. Really looking forward to seeing this guy.
