Combined, 27.2% of his picks from those 3 drafts either completed their rookie contract or at least had a return in draft compensation. The big one is the 0% extended. These numbers are so far below league average, it’s crazy. His final two drafts look more promising. Currently 83.3% are still on the roster. Players from these drafts are not yet eligible for extension.
Always thought we should've kept Darron Lee and Juston Burris. They might end up being crappy players (is Lee even on a team?), but Lee was starting to figure out how to play a little bit that last year he was here. He would've been a good WLB to have. Gregg Williams must've met him and said no way.
The 2017 draft was kind of like the Idzik 12 in 2014. A golden opportunity to land cornerstone pieces on days 1 and 2 that was squandered. We got a great S who turned into a malcontent, a good S, and a scrub WR. What if we had gotton Watson or Mahomes in round 1, Kamara in round 2, and Godwin in round 3......
What if we had picked only the top talent in each round every year we'd be undefeated every year. We had a damn good first two days of that draft. If there's anything to gripe about it's not getting a starter after round 2. If we picked up a HOF level talent and a quality starter every draft we'd be much better team than we are now.
I only brought up the first 3 rounds. We get the guys I mentioned and the rest of that draft is gravy. It's not realistic to expect a stud from each round, but these players were there for the taking and would've filled big needs. And we wouldn't have needed to give up three 2nd rounders to move up in 2018. But what's done is done.
its a disgrace.......i would love for someone to have kept track of kipers, or another comparable draft dude, best available player at the spot when a team actually makes a pick. compare the selections and see what has happened 2-3-4 years down the road with those players. would be willing to bet at least 1/2 the gm's would grade lower, maybe 2/3rds.
The team, the culture, the coaching staff also effect the development of those talents. Regarding Watson or Mahomes, I'm not convinced they'd be what they are in KC and Houston today had they been drafted and coached up by the Mac/Bowles regime. Mahomes also sat almost his entire rookie year. Would that have been the case here?
For me, - Sunday’s performance highlights this particular thread more than anything. As much as Gase’s stock is going down, - I’ll give him a slight out. The team didn’t have any pre-season games to get ready, - the O-line has been completely revamped & Darnold is trying to throw to guys that he hasn’t developed any timing/chemistry with. Gregg Williams was working w/o Jamal Adams, CJ Mosley & Avery Williamson. But then again he only had Adams last year, but yesterday it seems like the absence is catching up to his schemes. He may be well gone, - but I am still casting primary blame on the state of the franchise squarely at the feet of Mike Maccagnan. Its incredible the abundance of undrafted FAs we have that are getting significant playing time because our McCaggnan drafts went absolutely nowhere. Actually, - I’ll retract that last statement. They did go somewhere ---- directly into a toilet. Get ready for a long season, folks. I’m sure they are all nice guys trying their best, but the facts are indisputable - you’re not going to win games with the below accounting for 80-90% of the playing time. - Frankie Luvu + Harvey Langi + Neville Hewitt ------- who all went undrafted. - Jordan Willis & Tarell Basham ------ former 3rd round elsewhere draft pick washouts. Other facts; - Not 1 WR on our team was a NYJ draft pick. - Just 1 NYJ drafted edge rushing OLB (Jordan Jenkins --- was almost a goner after the 2019 season BTW. - Just 1 NYJ drafted CB (Bless Austin). - Just 1 NYJ drafted O-lineman (Mekhi Becton). We have a total of 2 players on the current roster from the 2017 draft & earlier.. Two. Yes, - 1 more than a single & 1 less than a trio. - Marcus Maye (2017 2nd rounder) - Jordan Jenkins (2016 3rd rounder) Amazing. Like disgraceful. Puts this whole thing in perspective. Long season, folks. Makes me more convinced that our rebuild will take longer to rebuild before we even start thinking of sniffing the playoffs in 2021!. IMO - teams need to have the steady stream of 4 - 6+ years of contributing 2nd, 3rd + 4th round draft picks on their team if they want to consistently make the playoffs, --- much less the 1st round pick.
