"handled very poorly"? When exactly? What did the FO that was "very poor"? I'm all ears. How did Gase handle the situation "terribly"? Terribly! WTF? Gase? What did he do exactly with regard to this particular situation? The Cowboys called JD and JD picked up the phone and listened. And Adams flipped tf out. This was "terrible" by JD? What would you have had him do differently? Please be specific? This whole situation was the Jets fault, eh? We "pissed him off"? Man, I don't know what to tell you, brother.
I was actually going to start a thread the other day that once Jamal badmouthed Gase, he had to go, I had grown really tired of Jamal's mouth. Excellent player, but a big distraction IMO. On the surface, the Jets probably got more than most would have thought possible at this time. Good riddance to 33. Good job by Douglass.
If the Jets got a second round pick in the end it would've received the classification of handled poorly, given what the reported potential trade was with the Cowboys at the deadline. It was frustrating to see this implode these past two months because you just figured that we were going to get a lesser deal because we were in a bad spot and needed to overpay a malcontent or trade him. But I mean that's all kind of irrelevant considering the haul we got. It's frustrating we didn't get a deal like this done before the receiver rich draft. Regardless, a C+ rating is asinine and ignores the situation of a player that criticized the coach and the owner in the past month and fought the GM at the deadline.
I gave it ah A, and that was more directed towards Douglas, if he wouldn't have pulled the trigger now, the return would've kept going down. Eventually Adams would've started holding out Revi$ 2.0, Chances are if they paid him big money, it would've turned into Wilkerson, producing very little. Hopefully Douglas can draft well, otherwise if he doesn't hit on the picks, the fanbase will bring the pitchforks out
In the end, this trade will be judged on two factors: First: What the Jets do with all those picks they got. If they pull off something like what happened back in the day with Brick and Mangold on draft day? great. If JD pulls an Idzik and fcks up the picks? You can figure out for yourselves what the fallout will look and sound like. Second: Where does Adam's career go from here. If he becomes an perennial ALL-PRO Legend in the class of say, Reed or Lott, then at worst, the trade works out for both teams. Adams turns into a bum? I can see Jet Nation talking shit until Adam's last day in the league..
Minkah Fitzpatrick went for a 1. Adams isn’t a 1 and a 3 better than Minkah. The haul that JD got for Adams is incredible.
I couldn't possibly disagree more. We don't know what Douglas and Gase may have said or done behind the scenes, but what we do know is that Adams has acted like a spoiled brat the entire time, throwing a public temper tantrum, has contradicted himself, has acted totally unprofessionally, has hurt himself, and the team with his comments. If anything, Gase perhaps should get some blame because he is the one directly responsible for managing and handling the players. Douglas has many other things to think about. Douglas spoke with Adams, and Adams calmed and quieted down. Then Adams decided to ratchet things up a notch. Then evidently someone else or several someone elses (his agent? other players? Douglas? Gase?) spoke with him and he calmed down again, then erupted again last week. Douglas and Gase can't make Adams behave like a mature adult, be patient, or see reason. IMO your blaming them without any proof of wrong-doing on their part is not reasonable. One cannot reasonably say that "It should never have come to this." If Adams was determined for things to come to this, there's nothing that Douglas or Gase could have done to prevent it. The only thing Douglas could have done was to cave, and then he and the Jets would have been screwed with every other player who wanted a new contract. It is quite a haul. Period. Your attempt to rationalize it downward is mistaken. No one, from media to fans to probably those who work and play in the NFL, thought the Jets would get much in a trade of Adams after all the crap he said in the media trashing Douglas, Gase, Woody and the organization. That Douglas still got two first round picks is nothing short of amazing. That he got a quality cover S who is flexible and can play either S position AND an additional 3rd round pick is remarkable. On Fox Sports they said no other team was willing to give anywhere near as much as Seattle did. Douglas could have caved in negotiations and received much less in return. He didn't. Unless or until we get direct information proving that Douglas lied on several occasions to Adams and was just jerking him around, there's no way anyone can reasonably blame Douglas for this. Adams has been very free with what he said on social media and to the media since he became a Jet. Douglas publicly showed Adams respect and appreciation, and he acted like a mature adult. Douglas could have known from the get-go that Adams was always going to be a problem and could have determined fairly early that the Jets were probably going to have to trade Adams eventually because they were never going to pay a SS the kind of money he wanted. He was just determined to get value for Adams before he actually traded him. Well, if so, he accomplished that. He could have also truly wanted to keep Adams long-term and intended to pay him next offseason, but begin negotations this past offseason, then Covid happened. Covid changed everything. It made the future uncertain in terms of even having a season to affecting the cap for next year and beyond. Adams should have understood that and accepted it. He didn't. It was like he wanted his money come hell or high water, but then made his comments that he'd accept being traded to other teams and not getting the new contract this year. How was Douglas supposed to deal with that? Sorry, imo you're just not being realistic or fair in this. It seems to me that you're just so used to the Jets' FO screwing up that you reflexively went there, and I think there is no rationale for doing that in this case. In terms of the 2021 draft, you're looking at it from the perspective of a fan, not a football professional. Yes, there may be fewer games to scout or get film on from the upcoming season, or perhaps none, but Douglas and the Jets have film from previous seasons, they can still talk to coaches, they still know the kind of traits and character they're looking for, and Douglas still either has a great eye for talent or he doesn't. If he doesn't, then two more seasons worth of games and film wouldn't help. If he does, then he'll still be able to spot the right players to target. The Cowboy offer was not greater. You're mistaken. Even if it had been, that would have been caving to what Adams wanted. There's no way that Douglas should have done that. I have great respect for you and we normally see eye-to-eye on most things, but I think you're way off base with your above post.
I believe that either Douglas wanted to keep Adams as a career Jet and thought things could work out, or no team was offering anything near what Seattle did before the draft. If it were to come out that some team was offering what Seattle did before the draft, one might could condemn Douglas for not accepting it, but not really if Douglas truly wanted to retain Adams and thought they could work things out. Getting rid of your best player, a leader on the field, and a potential HOFer would be a tough thing to ask of any GM. If Douglas had already determined that Adams was going to continue to be a problem child before the draft and made up his mind to trade him, why wouldn't he have done so if any team was making an offer anywhere near what Seattle did? If Adams had remained quiet, and apologized to teammates, the administration (Douglas and Gase), Woody, and the fans, he could have stayed and things been worked out, but I don't think he ever would have.
With our history as Jets fans, I can understand being a little skeptical until Douglas proves himself. IMO one has to look at both situations. Osemele was trying to screw the Jets. He was trying to get paid for a previous injury that he sustained and hid or lied about. Unless Douglas is a total idiot (and nothing has even remotely shown that he is), he never would have mishandled that situation. He could have picked up the phone and asked Ozzie for advice. Adams was being a petulant, spoiled brat diva. His ego and self-importance was/is way too big. He plays a non-premium position. IMO any GM (experienced or rookie) taking over a team like the Jets that is rebuilding would have listened to offers for every single player he has, and may have even solicited offers just to ascertain how the rest of the NFL valued his players. There's nothing wrong with that. Adams should never have gotten his panties in a wad over that. That's the crux of the whole issue. Douglas did nothing wrong, but Adams took supreme insult and never got over it. He contradicted himself over Gase, praising and then criticizing Gase. Douglas did nothing wrong. Even if he stalled Adams, probably every GM does that at times. No one could have foreseen Covid-19 or how it would affect everything. This was new ground. Yes, if Gase is truly a bottom 5 HC, it's a problem, but only a temporary problem. Losing your best player, a leader on the field, and one whom your DC schemes around is a bigger problem. The Jets have had lots of lousy HCs. They haven't had many great players, at least not recently. Even if Gase proves to be a bottom-5 HC, that doesn't mean that another year of Sam's development will be wasted. Lots of things go into making a good HC. Gase could be good at developing Sam an still fail as a HC in other respects. Who cares if Adams wins more games with the Seahawks in the next year or two than we will? The Jets are still a rebuilding team. The Seahawks undoubtedly would have won more games this year and probably even next even if Adams was still here and happy.
I am not saying that Adams is not at fault but one of the responsibilities of leadership is to communicate, keep everyone aware, make sure misunderstandings do not blow up and when they do mitigate the damage. Here the FO was put on notice as to the volatility of the Adams situation last year and was not able to prevent the situation blowing up again 3 different times this year. The FO turned down better offers at the trade deadline and a better offer on draft day in terms of trade value chart. The FO then let things blow up. Part of being an effective FO is making sure these things do not blow up. Not to mention next years draft class might be incredibly weak with the possibility of many players staying an extra year. While it is likely the top 10 picks will be strong the later half of the 1st round and day two might end up being very bare. A late first next year might be equal to a normal 3rd rounder. The Seahawks said they were very concerned about next year's draft and that is one of the reasons they wanted to trade out. The value offered in previous trade offers was much much greater than what we got. That is the bad part . The FO mis-evaluated the situation hoping to keep Adams long term. The good news is given the circumstances that existed yesterday they got more than could be expected. But there is no question here they got less in trade value chart amount than previous offers or that they mishandled this situation all year.
Agreed. Jamal wanted too much $ for his position. I didn't think the Jets could do this well (2 1st round picks!) trading him. Nice job Douglas!
One possibility that's not mentioned here is that Jamal just wanted to have a chance at a championship immediately and acted like a big baby in order to force a trade. If he is so set on getting paid now, is he demanding Seattle pay him a big contract? I don't know the answer to that, but if he's not, we have our answer and he got what he wanted.
Looks like an A on the surface. But grade should be “incomplete” need to see what your team does with new. Picks. You. Draft two average players. Grade becomes F
I ran the numbers and the difference in value is not as high as I thought. Value of Cowboys offer 2020 1st and 3rd 1st 950 3rd 185 Total = 1135 Seahawks Offer 2021 1st = 680 2021 3rd = 136 2022 1st = 310 2022 4th = -37 Total =1089 Although all these picks are one year later which deludes their value even further and the 2021 draft class is very questionable where many players are likely going to stay in school an extra year because of the Covid situation. While the top 10 blue chippers will likely still come out where the draft will likely be very weak will be in the back half of round one and in rounds 2 and 3. Given the uncertainty about the 2021 class I do not think anyone would consider taking the Seahawks offer over the Cowboys previous offers.
C+ to B- range, but given the atmosphere surrounding Jamal, this was an impressive haul. Truth be told JD could have gotten 10 late round picks and he still wouldn't be able to find a game changer like Jamal. So there's that too. Jamal's presence on the field will be missed for sure, but as the years march on and our new draft pics come in and contribute 'something', the pain will ease.
Has any player ever scorched earth like Adams has? I don't think so. This is really unprecedented territory. He had an agenda and it involved nuking anyone he had to in order to get paid. Reading the context of Leveon's tweet Adams endorsed the franchise during his recruiting (which would include Gase). So the idea that this is somehow Gase's fault is BS. The only way the breakdown should be factored into the value we got is to appreciate how well JD did considering how badly Adams attempted to sabotage JD's leverage. I think a great comparison will be what the Jags get for Ngakoue. Their situation has dragged on for much longer. He plays one of the most important positions on the football field. He has been just as adamant (without the nastiness) in his desire to be traded. Yet they still won't get as much back as we did. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I would give JD an absolute A on this one. You had a great player acting like a spoiled 3 year old on social media. If Adams had gone through the proper channels, he probably would still be here. I will miss his passion, and leadership. However you would have had to wonder how much of the latter would have been there if the season started. In regards to those that are concerned about our ability to make the most of theses draft picks, I say give JD your support. I truly believe that we have a really good GM on board. He appears to be a real character guy, which we have not seen in a long time. Let's see how this years picks work out. Hopefully the Johnson's will allow him to grow, and build this team.
