I know we are Jets fans, so maybe we have forgotten there is a thing in the NFL called "depth". The Jets don't have any. You can have Adams, Maye and still add a guy like Davis. He could move all over the field for Gregg Williams and contribute on special teams. Seems like a solid pick to me.
Remember all the “depth” we had at DLine all these years and we kept drafting Dlineman after Dlineman for additional depth. Id rather focus more on a position of need than a 3rd safety personally. Maybe Joe knows something we all don’t know though.
The Athletic ran a really good longform feature on Davis last summer. Here's a snippet. https://theathletic.com/1152062/201...ecame-college-footballs-most-athletic-safety/
Another middle of the night TV watch over here in the UK. Bear in mind that all my opinions are a product of ignorance but I was thrilled with this pick. I have always loved players that excelled in different sports, versatile players that succeeded at the top level in spite of their lack of specialism. I don't have a clue whether this is a sensible use of a draft pick but ever since big Tim Tebow had his brief time with the Jets, I have been drawn to big, strong, fast versatile athletes. Tim could play any sport he chose. It's just a shame he couldn't play quarterback. But his highlight reels were fantastic.... I hope Ashtyn gets a chance in the team. It's the coach's job to find the best ways to utilise his obvious talents - something that Tim's coach didn't do that well in his short NFL career.
Kid will hone his skills for a year and contribute on ST , possibly as a gunner with that speed... he'll step in for Maye next season after Jamal gets his monster deal & Maye is allowed to walk in FA.
I may be wrong, but my guess is that the Jets intend to keep both their safeties. It seems clear to me that the Jets are going to be a predominantly zone team in the immediate future (look at their cornerback signings/interest: Desir, Ryan, Maulet). Davis reportedly is most comfortable in zone coverage, and I think that the true plan is to convert Davis into a big zone corner.
Yep I’m thinking he’ll be used on 3 Safety sets allowing Adams to move around. Plus kick returns and probably ST coverage units. I’m sure he was on Boyers list.
Third and long: This dude and maye each covering half of the field and mosely and Adams taking away anything underneath
While I questioned this pick. I supposed Gary Williams was heavily involved in this selection. I don’t understand Gary’s defense and only him knows what this picks does to his defensive schemes. I trust Williams that he will create some havocs, more blitz’s and helped the D-backs.
The scouting reports on him are all over the place. I’ll read one that says his strengths are tackling with weaknesses in range coverage. Then I’ll read another with the opposite conclusion. WTF? Who to trust? I have watched very little highlights, but I don’t get the Marcus Maye replacement conclusion much. He seems more like the free safety in the box than a deep center fielder type. But again, who the heck knows, apparently no one
I would not call Maye awesome, but he is a decent player. And I agree with your age/contract analysis.
