Clean, blue chip prospects with upside are way to go when drafting this high. Either Wirfs, Wills or Lamb will be there without having to trade up, and they are my preference. Maybe even Ruggs or Thomas depending on our scouting reports. I’m real interested in Beckton but might be too much risk there picking this high (no pun).
The Jets have both an offensive and defensive system in place. Douglas is drafting with that in mind. Greg Williams' system has had plenty of success. Gase's hasn't yet except with Peyton Manning for one year, but since Douglas is drafting to fit that system and is a friend of Gase's, Gase isn't going anywhere soon.
Like I said earlier, obviously everything depends on the player, the Jets draft board and draft pick compensation value. I'm generally anti-trade up, but I'm piecing together scenarios in which I would. I'm thinking specifically, if the Jets top OL falls to 9, do you jump Cleveland and make a trade with Jacksonville? I dont think it would be crazy for two or three linemen to fall to 9. Obviously this is hypothetical, but according to the draft value chart, the Jets could trade 11 + 79 for 9 + 116 + 157. Is that a trade you'd consider if it meant getting your number one OT? I think I'll always be in the trade down camp, but if you think you could get a star OT, net an additional fifth rounder, all to move down 37 spots in the middle rounds, I dont think that would be horrible.
Teams that want to trade down are fanning the flames of this "all 4 tackles could be gone by...." to try and spook a team like the Jets into trading up. There's a lot of chess being played now. Douglas can't get panicky (and I don't expect him to) In 1983 who do you think was fanning the flames of the whole Marino/coke stuff. Don Shula and the Dolphins. So he would fall to him.
Again, it would depend upon the circumstances for me, but I probably wouldn't be very happy even then. I don't think that's going to happen. We need to take a deep breath, step back, and say in Joe Douglas I trust. Think positive thoughts. Focus on Lamb.
Your last bit is why it doesn't depend on the circumstances, it would just be plain old dumb. You can't justify giving away day 2 picks when you need OL and WR, just to take a OL and likely lose out on a WR. Just wait til 11 if the tackles go, take the best WR available which is probably an elite prospect, and you can still go OL with 2-3-3.
You seem like a WR over OT guy, so this is probably the wrong example, but I'll give it a shot. Would you trade the Jets second 3rd rounder, and in return receive a 4th and 5th rounder as well as the ability to jump Cleveland to take Wills or Thomas? I think that is the only kind of deal that I would accept in a trade up.
Probably not. I just don't see that as any better of a situation than landing Lamb or Jeudy and still having three more picks in the next two rounds. Douglas is a Newsome guy and an OL guy. I trust him to pinpoint talent in the middle rounds.
Nothing wrong with that, thats generally how I feel about receiver and why I'd be OK with the trade I laid out above. As long as OL and WR are thoroughly addressed I'll be happy.
If he feels strongly about a specific tackle, I don't mind it. But if they all graded out in the same tier without much separation, then it makes no sense.
Definitely not the way to go--trading up keeps us in the perpetual cycle of always having the least amount of pics on a year to year basis. Again, the best teams trade down and accumulate pics year to year. I doubt this happens because I have faith in JD-- If we miss out on the tackle, it is what it is. Should have thought about that when we won meaningless games during the year. Like I said, it pays to be the worst and the best team. 6-10 and 7-9 are purgatory. San Fran is a prime example of why it's better to fall flat on your face for one year. Because of that, they have a future HOFamer in Bosa and we have Mr. Silent Production.
That's whats bugs me about this picture. It doesn't say "look at all these coffee cups - I'm so dedicated" It says "I'm an unorganized slob" Who wants an unorganized slob in charge of their organization? Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
