Except for a big catch and run each for Coles and Cotchery in the first NE game, I don't remember too many.
Both of our recievers fight for extra yardage and try to get the first down, but they really don't get a lot of YAC.
14.7 is not stretching the field. 16.6, I know only 2 yards, is. Coles is a great receiver, but not a game breaker in terms of a sudden strike. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/wr.php Very good rankings of WRs. Coles is better. No question. But Burress can give you that sudden 45 yd TD when he feels like providing effort. Coles really doesn't have that ability.
No, but it goes back to the Coles/Santana Moss trade and that discussion. Moss gave us two big plays in the playoffs and that was invaluable, but for our team we're probably better off with Coles, who is a better presence on any 3rd down and does more during the game. Plus, the big play types like Santana and Burress tend to disappear for long stretches.
If Burress could approach the game with Coles' attitude and work ethic and toughness, hed be one of the great ones, because as far as physical talent goes hes got it all. But Burress has made it clear over the years that he doesnt, cant, and wont approach the game in that way. There have been guys with attitude problems who have turned it around (Cris Carter was a big time asshole early in his career), but Burress doesnt seem like the type to change his ways. In the end, if your down 7 and need a 50 yard bomb, Burress has the physical tools to do that, and hes the guy you want in that sort of situation. As far as an entire football season, which guy do you want playing for your football team, its Coles, hands down.
I root for Chad, LC and Santana Moss when he was here. Funny though that asa Moss went to an Offense that had a Decent arm QB who got the ball downfield he exploded. IMO, It also depends on the system. Hackett's system was Not vertical enough. Pexiglass gets at least half of his TD's on "Jump Balls" or catches that use his height. That DOESN'T Make him more of a game breaker. LC Has better stats and is a better overall receiver. EOS If Plexiglass was such a game breaker, why doesn't he break any games? Last I saw, they keep losing games.
Coles and Cotch are going to break Jet records for reciever duo's this year. That means better than the Keyshaun Chrebet year in 98 when they were pretty much unstoppable.
They Just did a Segment w/ Jaws on ESPN breaking down Coles' Big day and how "Explosive" he was in the JETS win... Someone let me know when Plexiglass gets his segment on doing the same thing in a Giants win. Oh wait.. They keep losing. My bad. I guess you can't be explosive or a Big play guy if your team keeps losing
Moss is a play maker.. where is he now? with the 4 and f'd skins. Coles is the kind of guy you build an offence around. Rember Mangini is building a team in the mold of NE. TEAM players not "i" guys.
No question about it. Coles is an every-down threat, someone who has to be covered constantly. He's a perfect fit for Chad's style and abilities too, so for us, he's the man you want out there. Put in a different QB (Clemens) and things might change. But for now, for the 2006 Jets, it's Coles, hands down.
I would rather Toomer over burress. I watch both Giants and Jets games. Burress does not fight for the ball, he doesn't try to make anything happen, he is just a sorry reciever to me. He has a serious attitude problem where his stigma is that he is better than everyone else. Coles has heart team is more important to him than anything else. Burress is probably more concerned with his stats than how the team is doing as a whole. I never liked burress in pittsbugh and I think he is a cancer to the Giants....I would rather Toomer over Burress.
Don't forget, his game-breaking play includes "quitting on a play" where the ball thrown in his way ends up intercepted.
