That's why I mentioned trading down with Tampa Bay. That would give them a better chance to get the OT they want, and it would still keep the Jets picking ahead of the Broncos. Even if Oakland does take a QB, one or two of the three WRs could still be gone by #11, and SF is all but guaranteed to take a WR imo.
Well the point is they aren't shoved there but meant to be in there, just seems a bit odd that you can't click a forum link. It is like the old dears in this country that get up in the morning and put BBC1 on the TV and leave it all day, now this was mad enough when we only had 3 channels to choose from but nowadays it is mental. You, sir, are this forums equivalent of an old dear
I agree it could be risky to count on Fant but JD did invest $30 mil on him. I know he can be allowed to walk after year 1 but he did give him $13 mil guaranteed. Given his distaste of playing RT and that's Edogas spot, would ib be all that unreasonable to assume he'll roll with Fant, or believes in whatever he saw in Fant, and get the stud WR to go along with Fant. Thats my confusion. He'd have a lot tied into Fant and the rook and then would be reaching a bit at WR. And we're in terrible shape there. Its just to me none, and I mean all, of the LTs are just good prospects, none sure things. And all seem to think all 3 WRs. could be. Interesting choice IMO
Is there any other tape about of Fant? Apart from that quality one when he manhandles Garrett, if he plays like that in 13 of 16 games we will have a left tackle, christ compared to what we had if he played as well as that in half the games it would be a 50% improvement.
I don't know what tackle Joe will get in the draft. But I DO know we have a GM who will know the most about all of these tackles. Having a GM who cut his teeth in the trenches will prove invaluable. I doubt Joe would draft a 'Wayne Fucking Hunter' because he had a good senior bowl game. Joe will know exactly what to look for. Joe will study tape on ALL these prospects probably going back to highschool to see how they've developed over the years. What have they gotten good at? What specific foot placement and hand techniques have they tried and mastered? What pass rushers have the dominated? Struggled with? All those things. He'll probably look at what Gace has on the coaching side too. If Joe doesn't have tons of faith in our ability to develop players, he may steer clear of a prospect with a high ceiling but needs a lot of work on his technique. Stuff like that. Whoever we get will be the best tackle left when we pick. That I feel good about.
ding ding ding! you are correct sir. I click over to TGG a few times a day and scan the headlines looking for new topics. If it's important, it will be on the main page!
I fully admit I dont know enough about Fant and I'm not basing my comments on a deep belief that hes the answer but just trying to test my logic. Does it make sense after investing in Fant, a LT to draft another LT having two to compete for that spot over a WR who walks in and starts? Plus Im praying that JD as not only a personnel guy but a former OLman knows what he sees. Fingers crossed
I wanted us to draft a left tackle because "SAM" but I have wondered what the point is of signing Fant if you are going to take a LT with a high draft pick, it would seem one of the choices is a waste either the pick or cash, we do know he has an easy out but that just confuses the issue even more tbh? You just look at that video and think, yes he looks great but we have all seen good tape turn bad on game day.
Some posters bring up a good point here. It is pretty rare that WR's at the top of the draft are a safer play than OL but I also believe that to be the case this year. I'm on record many times stating that I want Lamb at 11. I'd be happy with Jeudy too. That said, I still get that awful, pit in my stomach feeling knowing the Jets draft history that they'll pick the 4th rated OL. I really hope I'm wrong. Please draft the game breaker on O for once.
Exactly. It's Douglas' curse that the Jets have huge needs at LT and WR. It's his blessing that this draft has very good to great prospects at both positions. It's a real quandry. It seems to me that if he were planning on taking a WR, he would have already signed a veteran OT to backup/compete with Fant for the starting LT job. Unless he already has a handshake agreement in place with Beacham, Peters or Williams/Redskins, he's taking a chance that none of them will be available following the draft. He can't go into the season without at least 3 OTs on the roster, and that third OT needs to have a lot more experience than Fant and Edoga have. Once the season starts, it's too late. The Jets WR corps may be pretty awful (it definitely is), but at least there are warm bodies there, and with the quality and depth of WRs in this draft, the Jets should be able to add at least one, if not two WRs in the draft and could even wind up signing a veteran released following the draft or TC. With teams so desperate for OL help, I'd be shocked if any OTs with any starting experience are released. They'd be traded. Teams could get in a real bidding war, and Douglas could have to burn a lot of draft capital in next year's draft to insure that he has competition and quality depth at OT. I think that Lamb and Jeudy are better prospects than Thomas and maybe Becton, but Douglas may think he has no choice but to roll with an OT. While Mac certainly didn't do the Jets any favors, and the Jets didn't have a lot of cap space, Douglas could have cleared more cap space by cutting Winters and Bellamy and trading Williamson that would have enable him to sign another OT. Jason Spriggs is still out there and he has played both LT and RT. He didn't fare very well in GB but was a highly-regarded prospect a couple of years ago. I don't know if GB plays a zone or man scheme and which Spriggs is better-suited for, but I'm more than a little surprised that Douglas hasn't signed him already. He can't be that expensive. I think if I were in Douglas' shoes, I'd at least be in contact with Spriggs' agent and find out what they're looking for. I'd be surprised if he isn't better than Edoga, although Edoga may have a higher ceiling. In any case, I don't think Douglas would be reaching at all for WR. If Lamb and Jeudy weren't in this draft class, it would still be a very good and deep class of WRs. There's Ruggs, Jefferson, Mims, Shenault, Higgins, Reagor, Pittman Jr., Claypool, Gandy-Golden, Bryan Edwards, Tyler Johnson, Hamler, Aiyuk, Van Jefferson, Collin Johnson, Peoples-Jones, and Duvernay, plus about 30 more WR prospects.
The Jets could draft a WR in the 2nd and maybe even the 3rd who could walk in and start as well. They may not be as good immediately or ever as Lamb or Jeudy, but could still be a huge upgrade. I'm trusting Joe Douglas to know what the team needs most. I know what I'm hoping for (Lamb) and then signing Spriggs, Beacham or Peters, but will wait and see what happens.
Your draft is exactly why I hate that draft game site and will never go there again. You traded down and added an additional 2nd round pick, added 3 excellent WR prospects, two very good OL prospects, an edge rusher, a CB all of which are glaring needs, added a decent QB prospect and a P in the 6th round, again needs, got great value getting Ruiz in the 2nd round, Claypool in the 4th round (neither of which I see happening in the draft), all your scores were A's and A+s (with one A-), and they give you a B+. Personally, I don't think the idiots running that site know their ass from a hole in the ground. They don't have the proper evaluation or round grades on players, don't have the proper team needs, they give too many point for trading down countless times (which isn't reality), and then give you a much lower score than you deserve.
That's what I'm most concerned with. Douglas thinking that he HAS to go OT at 11. Don't get me wrong I don't think it's a bad way to go I just think Lamb or Jeudy would be better. But if Douglas knows what he's doing then he can get us some skill position help in rounds 2/3.
