Context is needed for sure. I think we all know Gordon holding out was the dumbest decision yet. Got his backup paid and he didn't get nearly the money he asking. Bell was getting 500+ touches and the Steelers weren't giving him good guaranteed money.
If you believe that Douglas will screw up picks like Idzik and Maccagnan, we have a much bigger problem. And frankly, if that's true, Adams will be begging to leave no matter how much they promise to pay him.
We shouldn't be putting JD on a pedestal just yet, perhaps we should wait to see how he drafts, we don't know yet, but I do know its extremely hard to replace an all pro player. I think Adams wants to be here, Jets FO needs to do their job and getting the team in the right situation to succeed, that's how you keep players. I don't see a problem here. I also think people here are undervaluing what a great safety does on defense.
I don't think that expecting him to be better than Idzik and Maccagnan did is "putting him on a pedestal". But you're right, we don't know how he'll be. Still, if he isn't better than those guys, I've lost all hope. And I don't think people are undervaluing what a great Safety can do, but you have to consider the whole picture, The Jets have numerous gaping holes, and the best, and surest way to fill them - long term - is with good draft picks. Would Adams make a difference on this team? Of course! But will he make the difference in them getting to the SB more than hitting on 3 high draft picks? If JD hits on these, the answer is "No". If he doesn't hit on these, the answer is moot, because they won't be contending for a number of years and Adams will want to leave anyway.
You don't trade away a known for IFs. Adams is a GREAT football player forget about what position he plays. Now that Brady is gone Adams could be the best player in the AFC East who's better? He could even be the best defender in football he's not gonna have too much competition. I think he's that good. BUT They already lost Robby who I had ranked as the Jets second best player and from what I've been reading the past few days Adams is still on the trade block so who knows? With the Jets can't discount anything including trading away Adams.
I think the Jets need to focus more on hitting mid-round picks then trading all pro players for lottery tickets. Fix that and you have a better team.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. We will remain perpetually in rebuilding mode until we stop letting our talent walk out the door. Anyone with common sense knows the draft is a gamble. To give away an established star for an unknown makes no sense. I would only trade him for another proven player. If that included draft picks, then that would be icing on the cake.
It isn't giving away an established star for an unknown, it's giving away an expensive established star who plays strong safety for multiple cheap unknowns picked high in the draft. And giving huge contracts to stars doesn't always work, e.g. Muhammad Wilkerson.
He doesn't have to screw up the picks. Adams is probably the best player in the league at what he does and he could well end up being a HoF level player. He is the heart of the defence. If you think that even a good GM can guarantee both replacing him and improving the roster with a late(ish) first round pick and two mid-second rounders then I would fundamentally disagree. A good GM could probably guarantee getting mediocrity with those picks, but not replacing a star. At absolute best it would be a wash, most likely a downgrade.
I'll take undervaluing Adams presence on defense for 500. He plays in the slot, free safety and rushes the passer. The guy literally has ended offensive drives on his own. Wilkerson didn't work, but I don't regret that extension. Far better then paying Snacks and Sheldon who never accomplished anything and wanted more money.
If you have to fire sale Adams you do that next season not this season. This season he's still under contract at a reasonable rate and you have control of next season at a reasonable rate. The new CBA essentially ends holdouts unless the player's endgame is early retirement. Playing poorly in response to not being able to hold out? That's never going to work for a player. As loud as Adams might get it won't be louder than the Jets fan base if he is traded in a fire sale before there is no other choice.
Jamal Adams is an immature punk. Sorry, but he is. Good football player, but you don't build and throw out a boat load of money to a Safety. If we could trade him and get two 1s or a 1 and two 2s or a 2 and a 3, I do it in a heartbeat.
We're not going to fire sale him this season. If we trade him we're getting top dollar. The reason the Pats may well be in decline is they were forced to fire sale both Garapollo and Chandler Jones. Jones is one of the most dominating defensive players in the NFL. They got a 2nd and a bust Guard for him. The Pats didn't miss a beat but they sure could have used an extra couple of ones to rebuild their O last year which they didn't have because they waited until the contract year on both of them. I'm not advocating trading him but I do think we need to commit to him now or get top value for him now.
Like it or not, Adams is what the youth of our society is. A Brash, arrogant, “look at me” type of guy. However, he backs it up and other players seem to like him. A safety like him is a difference maker as well. Do we need two of the top 10 safety’s in the NFL? Not ideal, but that’s they way the back end of our D is built
The 17 and the 51 is a quick-easy fire sale. The right valuation for the seller in a seller's market, which is where we are with Adams right now, is a handful of picks or several prime picks. Minimum acceptable value for Adams would be a 1st, 2nd and 4th in this draft and with the 1st in the top half of the 1st round. I don't think the Jets should re-do Adams contract this year unless he makes significant concessions on the overall cap number. I'd be happy to give him solid guarantees and upfront money but only if he agrees to a reasonable cap figure below $14M a year.
Jamal Adams has been more flat out dominant than a few Jet fans even realize... I don't think anyone on here can create me a top 5-10 List of All-Time Great NFL Safety's who've been able to average at least... 90 combined Tackles, 9.3 tackles for loss behind the line of scrimmage (LOS), 7.6 QB hits and and 4.0 sacks (per year) along with a passer rating against of 75.2 (top 7 among'st all SS/FS's in coverage). And lets be honest here, when talking about impact plays. Tackles and tackles for loss, beating up an opposing QB with hits and sacks along with very good coverage ability are all impactful attributes.
14 million is last years top number for an impact Safety. I think you can give him 15 and cap out at 16 the year after.
