His best years he had Decker and DT.. Decker and DT were big with decent catch radius... he like mismatches that can move the chain after the catch. Ge also likes slot receivers that can run good routes. He relies on timing for smaller guys and big targets with YAC ability. Never has really used much of speed down the field guys.
Two or three seasons ago Crowder led the league in separation by slot WRs in the NFL. More than Landry. More than Edelman. More than Cobb. Crowder is one of the best in the game. Anyone selling him short needs to reevaluate him. He got stuck in an anemic offense for two years under Gruden with Alex Smith where they threw the ball less than 20x a game. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-crowder-leads-top10-slot-receiver-separation
Joe didn't sign Perriman to be a #1 or even a #2 WR, he got him to replace Anderson who is not a #1 or #2 WR on a good team. Douglas was certainly planning on drafting his new #1, and Crowder at this point is the #2. If Anderson stayed he would've been bumped down to #3 at least, and possibly even the #4 option if JD gets lucky in the draft and finds another good WR in a later round. Robby was NEVER worth what he was asking, and $10 million/yr was a gift that he was dumb to turn down if it was offered.
Whether Robby is a a league-wide #2 is debatable. In Carolina he won't be a #2 but that's because McCaffrey is one of the best WR's in football and Moore is a high end #2 WR. Robby has certain skills that you can't teach. He's a bit more polished than Perriman but that's not to say Perriman can't be as effective in this offense. Perriman is similar to Enunwa. Physical, athletic and fast straight line speed. He's not going to juke anyone out of their shoes or create a lot of separation. He is a solid 3rd/4th option as I said in my earlier post.
If you want to know what is important in Gase’s offense, look at when it was the most successful. 2013: -Demaryius Thomas-92 receptions, 1,430 yards, 14 TD’s -Eric Decker-87 receptions, 1,288 yards, 11 TD’s -Wes Welker-73 receptions, 778 yards, 10 TD’s -Julius Thomas-65 receptions, 788 yards, 12 TD’s 2014 -Demaryius Thomas-111 receptions, 1,619 yards, 11 TD’s -Emmanuel Sanders-101 receptions, 1,404 yards, 9 TD’s -Wes Welker-49 receptions, 464 yards, 2 TD’s -Julius Thomas-43 receptions, 489 yards, 12 TD’s 2015 -Alshon Jeffrey-54 receptions, 804 yards, 4 TD’s -Martellus Bennett-53receptions, 439 yards, 3 TD’s -Eddie Royal-37 receptions, 238 yards, 1 TD -Zach Miller-34 receptions, 434 yards, 5 TD’s -Marquess Wilson-28 receptions, 464 yards, 1 TD -Josh Bellamy-19 receptions, 224 yards, 2 TD’s My takeaway is the number 1 target is the big play WR, then the route technician, then TE and Slot WR are pretty equally used. The year in Chicago the Bears were ravaged by injuries.
Thanks for the breakdown,,,very informative. It's clear not only from the above, but also what we saw of Gase's offense this past season, that Anderson was never going to be a big part of it enough to warrant the money he was demanding.
Anderson and Perriman had nearly identical catch percentage, 54.2% to 52.2%, bur Anderson had 4 drops while Perriman had none
Perriman sacrifices some on-field speed but I think he's better at point of contact/reception especially when coming back to the ball. Anderson is one of the worst receivers fighting back to the ball I've ever seen. He's good at tracking the ball down field and fighting for the ball when advancing forward. Terrible on anything with a defender running back to the ball with him. I think we saw the best of Anderson. He might squeeze a 1,000 yard season out in better circumstances. Perriman is trending upwards but still not some huge upgrade. It's a relative even swap. I just think Perriman can be a bit more versatile in offense given what he did at the end of last year and how it looked like he really worked on becoming a receiver and not just a down field runner. It's such a small sample size though.
I really like the signing, only wish that it had been for two years. Truly I believe it’s an upgrade.
all he needs is a Hall of Fame quarterback, top three of all time having a career year and his offense looks great!
I'd settle for a promising quarterback in his third year who can avoid debilitating communicable diseases.
May want to recheck that.... Perriman had 1 drop over 69 targets this year, last year he dropped over 28% of his passes. Last year was an anomaly for perriman, all his production came in a 5 game span, with most of that coming in one game. Compare them over 4 years and Anderson doubles Perrimans production while Perriman more than doubles Robby at drop rate. Anderson was also covered by the Ds top corners most games vs third corners for Perriman. Even when he had his big games last season, against some bad Ds, he wasn't covered by #1corners.
Just further illustrating the crowded cast of skill talent that Robby's walking into which should benefit him. That said, Samuel still has work to do to prove he can go up against top corners consistently and produce which is something Robby has already done. I'm not advocating that we should've kept Robby, I'm merely pointing these items out when some Jets fans go gaga silly over every damn signing that we make.
The guy is a one year wonder but Jet fans for some reason think he is the equivalent of Robby Anderson. The body of work over a 4 year period speaks for itself. There is a reason he was cheaper to sign than Anderson. The more I think about it, Jets just might go WR if Lamb or Jeudy are there at 11. They need to keep Perriman, Crowder, as the 2nd and 3rd receivers in depth chart. There is no way Perriman or Crowder are beating top CBs. Herndon might have a monster year if Jets don’t draft an elite WR, he’s the only one that’s going to be open.
He also has 2 bad knees. I have never seen scrubs get such an ovation. Some comments here, like hes significantly younger,(3 months is significant?) Better hands (more than double the drop rate) got him for half the price(8 mill is now less than half of $12 mill). All his production cam over 5 games and most of that came over 2 vs Miami and Detroit the 32 and 29th worst passing Ds in the league. I agree the 4 year body of work can't be ignored.
