I understand you don't think Winters is worth it, but if he takes a pay cut like the previous poster suggested he would be good to keep. I say this not because of his performance but because even with all these signings we need depth at OL, we can't be hacking away at parts we don't have. Depth is key for us right now.
I don't get the WInters love -- even at half the price. Inconsistent and injury prone. Was he some good locker room presence?
I don't either, but Douglas supposedly likes his toughness playing through injury, and at least he knows the offense and blocking scheme. There's something to be said for that. I can live with his being kept another year for depth, but hope he never has to see the field again for the Jets, and would really rather see him replaced by cuts following the draft or training camp, or a rookie.
I agree and that might have been the way the previous regime handled it. But even at a discount will not improve Winters. Maccagnan gave this guy a 33 million dollar contract. He should be thrilled and move on. Let some other team sign him for depth.
2014, 2016, 2017 & 2019 Winters ended the season on injured reserve. Approaching 30, hard to think why that pattern would change for the better. As far as his 'locker room presence goes, Brian Winters was the one who dressed down his own QB on the field and in full view of all down in Miami (i.e. inc. the Phins) and when Darnold attempted to be the 'bigger man' and straighten things out later on the sidelines, Winters continued to be about Brian Winters.
When not injured, he was also not very good. Some folks on this board will insist he's a decent run blocker. He is not. He is a D+ level run blocker, but it looks like improvement because he's an F- level pass blocker.
This is actually an amazing deal. Way cheaper than I thought and well laid out. Douglas is doing an insane job so far. Making sure he keeps the cap open for the future.
