If you moved on from every OL or LB that sustained an injury you’d never be able to build anything lol. The cap numbers on these guys is a better argument. However we are not pressed for cap, and we desperately need help at those positions. The Williamson cap number is also not big at all imo relative to his performance. Remember not everything is a net savings. Cut them and you have to sign someone to replace.
That's what I think the Jets are going to do. The most likely spot for a trade is in the middle of the 1st round of the draft when the Cowboys suddenly realize that they can package the 17 and their 1st next year and get Jamal Adams or take Xavier McKinney and hope he turns into Jamal Adams. McKinney may not even make it down to their pick.
The Jets had multiple guys step up to do a decent job inside with both Mosley and Williamson out all of last year. I don't think Douglas and Gase are all that worried about ILB given that they have Mosley coming back and the young guys stepping up. You can argue that Williamson would be in trouble even if he wasn't hurt last year. $8.5M is a pretty big number for your second ILB given that you want to flip money to the other side of the ball to help out Sam.
If the Cowboys send two 1st rounders to the Jets, that opens up the possibility of going OL at 11 and a WR like Jefferson at 17 or WR at 11 and trade the 17 to get another 2nd rounder to use on an OL like Cushenberry. Then, get one of the top TE prospects next year in round 1 to give us our own Gronk and Hernandez pairing. There's like a 5% chance of this happening, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
If Adams was a normal star player I'd expect him to be back with the Jets next season. The things that make me think he has a good chance of moving on are the ex-GM pick, squeaky wheel, wants a huge contract now, etc. Ex-GM pick means he has less protection in the turnover going on now. The other two make him a major headache for a GM that wants to put his imprint on the team as fast as he can and who needs to shift into offense-first mode to get the young franchise QB rolling. The fact that Darnold isn't a Douglas pick only compounds the situation. Darnold is the guy he *has* to build around. He's fairly likely to see further mandates as counter-productive and to put as much as he can into helping Darnold out.
Trading Jamal Adams away would be an enormous mistake, even for 2 first rounders. He is a tremendous player and a major tone setter for the whole team. Ed Reed never got traded in his prime. Nor Polamalu, nor Lewis. He is the real deal.
Gurley is gone because he can't handle the workload given the price. I'm not sure Adams will suffer the same fate. Extend him now and make it a reasonable long term deal. The guarantees are the key. Set the trend and stop waiting for others to set the market. 2 first round picks I'll consider it but I don't see the Boys making that trade given they have to pay Dak soon. Zeke is starting to take a good portion of the cap.
I was just thinking: 2019 could have been a blessing for the Jets. All of the injuries on defense allowed Gregg Williams to show his ability with less than perfect talent and younger players. The defense was still strong. By doing that, it is now allowing Joe Douglas to focus more on offense. Mosley and Williamson will be back too, which will be huge. Pass Rusher and Cornerback still need to be addressed, but I think people would agree that revamping the offense is more important than the defense at the moment.
With the new cba, if a player makes the pro bowl in two of their first three years, their fifth year extension number is set at the franchise tag. Franchising them the year after is 120% of their previous year’s salary In a year or two adams contract will be far more expensive than if we extend him now.
Our backup and backup to the backup ILBs played with heart, but were clearly outmatched. It was a major weakness on our D (along with CB). You can not compare a guy like Hewitt to Williamson, that is where we disagree. 8.5M is a big number but 2m is already water under bridge. We would save 6.5M, but then need to sign a competent ILB at somewhere in 2-6M range which is what avg starters get. So what are you really saving to give up the production of Williamson? I wouldn’t do it. Can make a better case for releasing Winters at over 7M savings. But again with the OL so bare, and barely any effective run blockers rostered currently, I wouldn’t be too quick to do that either. We have cap room but a very thin roster, so we are not in position to make deplete ourselves of starters without replacements. Just my opinion.
https://sports.yahoo.com/breaking-d...sal7waqcsyzlvsovqfkfsifuze3joynpkeybosld1sv2f Man we gotta a lot of work to do. So many holes I hope we can re-sign a few more of our own.
I’m fine with an early extension, he’s proven to be reliable on and off the field. Jamal Adams is exactly the kind of player you don’t worry about regressing after getting paid. He wants Canton, Ohio bad.
There article didn’t say but when the nba implemented similar measures, it was applied retroactively ha. i believe they have to be voted the first go around
Based on the “12 Players” formula I find useful, the Jets are currently about 1 player closer to fulfilling the 12 players. For anyone who didn’t see a couple months ago, to compete in the playoffs you basically need a minimum of 12 players. 1 QB 2 Pass Rushers (Anywhere on D-Line) 3 OL 3 Offensive Playmakers 3 Defensive Playmakers After the Jets’ early free agency moves, its looking like we have more depth at key positions, but not much more in the 12 player chart. 1 QB (Darnold) 1 OL (McGovern) 1 Offensive Playmeker (Crowder) 2 Defensive Playmakers (Adams, Mosley) As of right now, I do feel that Maye is a fringe Defensive playmaker, and with better CB play that could evolve. I think Q. Williams could be a legit interior pass rush threat as he develops in year 2. I also think Bell could be considered an offensive playmaker in a better surrounding cast. I believe we have somewhere between 5 and 8 out of the 12 players needed, before the remainder of FA and the draft. Of course keep in mind, you can’t have trash outside of those 12, and using those players well is important.
I'd want more than swapping their #1 and next year's #1 from them, especially since we'd be giving up 6 spots this year. They'd have to give a #2 this year at least. But I do agree with your earlier point about not being ina rush to give him an extension, especially if he's asking for the moon and stars. If he wants security, then he can give a "home town discount" to get it now, and get insurance against getting hurt or seeing his play drop off for some reason the next two years. Signing him to a bank-breaking contract now also limits their ability to trade him. Based on how Douglas has done so far, I think he'll be prudent with Adams.
I like what Douglas is doing with the cheap short term signings, but it's pretty clear we won't be competing for a playoff spot in 2020. That's how bad and especially thin this roster is. We're on deck for a 4-12 season, but that will likely mean Gase is fired so there is that.
Interesting. I basically agree with this, although I'm not sure how many teams have two pass rushers (I'm assuming this means quality or "elite" pass rushers). I'm curious...is this 12 player formula your own, or did you read it somewhere?
