Mortgage was a bit harsh of a word, you're right. I just don't think they got good value. Why not take the best receiver in the draft at 22, get him on his rookie deal and let him build a relationship with your young inaccurate quarterback from day one?
exactly. Browns have had sexy picks (#1s in Myles, Baker, high picks like CB), sexy trades OBJ Landry, expensive FAs and they're going backwards. Yet there are many posters on this board who want to repeat that formula. Trade up, get FA XXX no matter what price. If we don't get those guys no matter what price we failed. Who cares if the guy is a scheme fit. WHo cares that lines are a unit not 5 individuals get a WR in the first round even though that is perhaps the riskiest pick to make in first round -- maybe more so than QBs
McGovern is another good signing on a manageable deal. 3/5 spots on the offensive line have already been turned over. 4 are basically set in stone. We are freeing up a lot of draft flexibility.
I don't think they would have gotten a WR as good as Diggs at 22. This is the year that QB class has to show their worth. They got him protection last year, now they are getting him weapons. It's a sound strategy IMO.
Justin Jefferson will be better than Diggs and available at 22. Henry Ruggs will fit Allen better than Diggs. He's a deep threat and can cover Allens inaccuracy in the short-intermediate range. He may also fall to that spot.
The Browns are a mess no doubt. However they just signed Conklin for 14M per, a proven stud in his prime, while we reached big time on Fant at 10M per (albeit less guarantees). Kinda hard to pat ourselves on the back while bashing them right now.
That's my thought too although I think the Jets could still be in on another tier-2 FA pickup. You can never have too many competent bodies on the OL. It's hard to find 300lb guys who can walk and chew gum at the same time when one of yours goes down week 5 with no warning.
He can play both positions but is a better guard. Maybe they will take the best between available G and C and McGovern slides into the available slot.
I was so glad when the big trade the Vikings were making was not with the Jets. I have had enough of me-first players.
McGovern will be great against the Patriots because he won Massachusetts! (There's an old reference.)
Guaranteed with a qb that can accurately get him the ball and not sail it over his head.... again I don't think Diggs style will work well with a very inaccurate qb.
