Probably the majority of them, but who knows. Pro Bowl is a popularity contest, he was 2nd team all pro once. We don't glorify our players making the pro-bowl, so why should we glorify Trent Williams?
Because it's very rare that you make the pro bowl unless you're awesome at your position. A 7x Pro-Bowler is nothing to overlook. These players are only popular, because they're very good to grea at what they do. Tim Tebow was as popular as they came and never once made the pro bowl because for the most part, he sucked. Trent Williams on the other hand? 7x Pro Bowler and not because of "popularity" either but because he's one hell of a blind side protector.
Trent Williams *was* one hell of a blindside protector. Just like Leveon Bell *was* the best back in the NFL. You don't pay for *was*
William's was a good player. Thing is he hasn't played in over a year. When he did try to come back he could keep his helmet on. He may not be the same player he was. He also reportedly want a $20 million per year contract. You do use picks to obtain him then pay him that much for when he could never play anywhere near that level again. That's even worse than Trumaine Johnson deal.
The Jets have paid $67M over 4 of the last 5 seasons for a vaporware shutdown QB. It's part of the franchise complete dysfunction to think that paying somebody a wheelbarrow full of money will produce great results when all it does is make you a laughingstock.
The criteria to make the pro bowl is to still be a good player, unlike Tebow whom you are comparing. But making the pro bowl doesn't always mean you were one of the best at that position that specific year.
That's a very fair point brad, however, trading for him and paying him are two different things. yeah I don't wanna pay him $20 mil, that's absurd. But grabbing him for a mid/late round draft pick or some useless player, hell yea
Pro Bowl is nothing more than a popularity contest. Is that not true or false? No one is discounting him as a good player, but let's be serious, I ain't giving up a 2nd to 3rd rounder AND pony up a new contract making him of one the highest paid players.
I mean, a lot of players are deserving. So no, I don't agree to blindly applying that to all pro bowlers, unless you have evidence to support it
Yes, there are a lot of players that are deserving that get snubbed each year and they don't get in because they just aren't as popular. My point is Pro Bowl is an overrated way of judging a player (thats something you can google and you can see the reactions), I prefer All Pros accolades / votes.
I wouldn't mind picking him up for a 7th round pick. That's an acceptable risk. Paying a 5th rounder is just going back to all the mistakes the Jets made in the early 2000's when they kept taking other team's problems off their hands instead of developing their own players. The reason we are where we are right now is that we have spent a decade plus treating mid to late picks like Monopoly Money instead of the valuable team building resources that they are. Adding a 31 year old LT who likely will be retired by 33 or 34 at the outside for a 5th round pick is just continuing that trend.
the guy has been a great lineman for them for a long time, go after the pro bowl voters if ya want, but it doesn't say anything about Trent Williams' abilities
He's a very good player and I don't discredit him. Is he Jason Peters? Andrew Whitworth? Joe Staley? Hell, we call our own players overrated when it comes to the Pro Bowl. I don't get why we are treating Williams any different.
He's definitely a better player & investment than Jason Peters. Peters is one tough game away from the nursing home. Maybe Peters makes it through 2020 before retiring... maybe Idk enough about Whitworth and Staley
Peters ruptured his Achilles tendon in like 2014 and came back and was just as good, you gotta respect that. He's got 1 more year left in the tank IMO at 38. I am just not on board with spending a 3rd + money on Williams. We can get a tackle in the draft for a fraction of the price. Development him, etc.
There has never, ever, ever been a HOF player without multiple pro bowl selection(s). Obviously All-Pro status is saying more than Pro Bowl status but nonetheless Pro Bowl Status means you're very good to great @ your position.
