This draft class is loaded with game changers. Reminds me of the year where Idzik had all of those draft picks and selected a TE Amaro over all of those elite WR prospects. It was criminal. Joe Douglas must hit early and often. I pray Jeudy or Lamb slip to us; I don't see Douglas passing especially with Robbie Anderson on the way out. If both Jeudy and Lamb are gone well then it's gotta be Offensive Line 100% and hopefully an LT to protect Darnold's blind side for the next 10-15 years. Hopefully Douglas as an O-Lineman himself can protect Sam Darnold with not only an offensive line but also with more weapons as Darnold is the type of young developing franchise QB in which he can build a contender around. And yes, Le'Veon Bell who was an awesome locker room presence for us and a leader during our 1-7 start and thereafter as well during our 6-2 finish he deserves an offensive line rather than a makeshift historically speaking hoffic crapfest I've ever seen; he's an All-Pro future HOF back who deserves better than that while being under the age of 30. 65+ receptions this year. Crickets. Give Darnold and Bell weapons behind an O-Line for the next 3-4 years and we might not score on just opening TD drives under Gase anymore, but quite often thereafter. And behind a G. Williams led Defense while Brady is on his way out of N.E? We aren't far away from striking at the right time. QB= Check (Sam). RB = Check (Bell). TE's = Check (Herndon/Griffin). Slot = Check. (Crowder). WR: Which is why I pay Robbie Anderson and pay him big. He's worth it if paired alongside a Jeudy/Lamb as one of the greatest deep threat #2 WR's this league has ever seen #2 CB's one on one on the outside has no chance against Robby deep and I rather Darnold have that luxury over say a Mahomes or godforsaken Josh Allen. ESPN Central. Pay Robby Anderson. Draft Jeudy/Lamb. Build an O-Line. Williams will control the defense. Gase's offenses WILL SCORE.
I agree that Robbie shouldn't be paid big money, but I'd pay him $10-12 million. If you don't pay Robbie, then you're either going to have to draft at least 2, if not 3 WRs, or draft one or two and sign one in FA. A WR corps of rookie, Crowder, Berrios and Vyncint Smith doesn't cut it.
I tend to think that Robby Anderson is merely an ok receiver. At the same time I'd do all that we can to re-sign him at least in the short term, because the alternative is as you suggested; garbage.
Ideal? Hardly! I think Wills is overrated due to the talent around him and playing at Alabama, and may be only a RT. Trey Smith, while talented, has health concerns and is a bit raw. Ideal would be getting Andrew Thomas or Tristan Wirfs with our #1 pick and Justin Jefferson or Creed Humphrey with our #2.
I agree that at the moment, Robbie is merely an OK receiver. He showed improvement this season, and I think he has room for more improvement and will improve. I think part of his being merely OK was Sam's lack of accuracy in deep passes and our horrible OL. Get our OL fixed, Sam improve his accuracy, and add a very good WR in the draft to play opposite him, and Robbie suddenly is a lot better.
That's exactly it. I would give him an offer of 12 million. He's going to test the market anyway you look at it. Give him the offer and wait. Hopefully he's back. I would love to have Robbie, Pittman (kid is great after the catch), Crowder, Herndon/Griffin, Bell/Rookie (AJ Dillon please) and a much improved o line. Thomas would be amazing. Becton at the top of the 3rd would be killer. Scherf in FA. Maybe check Conklins price tag. And one of the 3-4th rd centers. If Thomas/wirfs isn't available obviously I would trade back and take a lesser lineman or Higgins which would change the Pittman pick. But point is Robbie at 11-12 would be good. He isn't a wr1.
Great post. We could also franchise tag Robby and try to get a deal done with him before the July deadline to lower the cap hit - feel like nobody is talking about that as an option.
Basically my ideal draft is Rd 1 Pick 11- Thomas, Wirfs, or trade back* (I know Lamb and Jeudy, I love both but compensation would be around what Pitt gave to trade up for #10 last year 1st, 2nd, 3rd next year) Trade Pick 15-20ish- Higgins, Austin Jackson(not as big on him now), Wills (not a huge fan), Biadasz (I like Humphrey better but still), Ruggs (could be good) Rd 2 pick 48 - Jefferson, Pittman, Shenault (if no wr rd 1) or Humphrey, Wanogho, Trade pick rd 2- any of the above and add Niang, Bredeson, Becton, and Josh Jones for OL. Plus Reagor, Peoples-Jones at WR, and on D Weaver, AJ Terrell, and Baun... Also I know people would gripe.. but Travis Etienne is the real deal. Wish we could afford to take him. Rd 3 pick 68 and 79 Becton, Weaver, anyone else above that is still around, also Nick Harris, KJ Hamler, Jeff Gladney, Trevon Diggs (I don't like him in rd1, maybe rd2), Lamar Jackson, Jake Hansen, Yasir Durant, Michael Pittman Rd 4 pick 120- this is where I want AJ Dillon.... kid is a beast and I hope he falls here. If not him then I go and of the above if available if not I go in this order RT. OG, WR, Edge, CB, depending on what was picked before. Other people I like - Chase Claypool, Lamical Perine, Gage Cervenka, Antoine Brooks (if we trade Adam's, hope we don't), Michael Pinckney Rd 5 pick 159- same as rd 4 I also like AJ Green (CB for Ok), Shea Patterson, Lavert Hill Rd 6 kicker... Jet Toner. Rodrigo Blankenship....
As long as he doesn't get hurt, it'll only help him in the long run. He'll now undoubtedly be the #1 center next year.
I think so. It also shows he cares about after football. He can up his draft stock and better himself. Can't argue with that. I would think it is much easier to focus on school when you aren't making millions.
I wouldn't count it out but it depends if he is bpa at a position of need where we trade back to. I've not seen anyone have him above 25 in a mock for a reason. He's a 25-30 players.. most see him as about 30 give or take 5 picks.
I was just spitballing. If we stay at 11, he'd definitely be a reach. He could be our Mangold of the 2020's. C's can be found in later rounds too.
I agree. I think it depends how far back we trade and who is gone. There are people I like throughout the 1st-4th rounds and some later. More picks is a good thing. Hopefully Douglas has a plan to put us back in the playoff picture. I'm not even opposed to trading down multiple times. 11 to 17th then to 26 is fine with me as long as we get good compensation. The wr and ol is deep through the first 3 rounds. The more I watch Michael Pittman and a few others the more I become ok with this.
http://turnonthejets.com/2020/01/new-york-jets-nfl-draft-second-tier-options/ New York Jets – NFL Draft Second Tier Options Joe Belic with second tier options for the New York Jets with the 11th overall pick in the NFL Draft Joe Belic Posted onJanuary 10, 2020 Jets fandom can rest assure Joe Douglas will be active in free agency and plug several holes (especially along the OL) prior to the draft; this will give the Jets much needed flexibility come draft day. There is a good possibility Andrew Thomas, Tristan Wirfs, Jedrick Wills, Jerry Jeudy, and CeeDee Lamb are all off the board when it’s time for the Jets to select at 11. In this week’s “Joe Jet 5”, I consider routes the Jets could potentially take if the players deemed most coveted aren’t available. Trade back — The big question here is who will be willing to make a deal? I’m already working on an article which explores trade back scenarios, and some names have emerged as possible trade bait. QB Jordan Love, a name to watch, will inevitably become more popular as the draft approaches. The Raiders (12), Colts (13), and Buccaneers (14) could all be in play. Henry Ruggs III (my third-ranked receiver) or Laviska Shenault may attract calls. If the versatile Isaiah Simmons (S/LB) makes it out of the top ten, I’m sure there will be buyers. If so, the Jets could move back, acquire more picks and target players such as Tyler Biadasz (my favorite center in the draft), Yetur Gross-Matos (an edge rusher who projects well as a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE), Creed Humphrey (another dominant center), or Kristian Fulton (solid man cover corner from “DBU”). If no trade back presents itself, I’d consider the following players at 11: Mekhi Becton (OT, Louisville) — Becton would make a great trade back target and pick eleven—at this moment—seems high for him, but his stock will continue to rise as we get closer to the draft and I predict he’ll enter the top 15 conversation shortly. Becton, a human wrecking ball, is an all-around great prospect at tackle who can do it all, protect Sam’s blindside and provide a much-needed punch in the run game. He’s been drawing comparisons to former Minnesota Viking Bryant McKinnie, which is considered high praise by many. The Jets, according to PFF, haven’t had a run blocker grade out at a 70 or more since 2015 and Becton’s prowess in the rush game is intriguing. Becton is a beast, an absolute soul snatcher. I’ve seen him treat defenders like rag dolls, tossing them to the side with no effort. He’s a mountain of man and a complete bulldozer; once he gets his massive hands on an opponent, it’s lights out. Becton has extremely long arms and uses them effectively in pass protection. He’s technically sound, extremely quick and fluid for a man his size (6’ 7” 369 pounds). Roll the tape and watch him go, he won’t disappoint. The offensive line should be the Jets’ main focus, and if Douglas intends to build a wall to guard Sam Darnold, Becton would be an excellent start. Henry Ruggs III (WR, Alabama) — After Lamb and Jeudy are off the board, Ruggs would be a nice consolation prize. Ruggs can lineup in the slot or the outside (Z), and he’s one of the most electrifying players in the draft with great instincts, good hands, and ridiculous speed. If you take your eyes off of Ruggs, the next time you’ll see him is in the end zone. I’d rather the Jets target a receiver late, but Ruggs should get some consideration, especially if Robby Anderson finds himself donning another jersey in the foreseeable future. Hopefully, Douglas re-signs Robby (for the right price), and the Jets have even more flexibility on draft night. 2020 is littered with talent at WR, and the Jets have the potential to find a gem in the later rounds: Tyler Johnson, Jalen Reagor, DeVonta Smith, Brandon Aiyuk, and Justin Jefferson to name a few. Isaiah Simmons (S/LB, Clemson) — Simmons is tailor-made for today’s NFL: he can attack from the edge, play off-ball linebacker, safety, and drop into coverage. He’s a rare talent, who can be used in tandem with Jamaal Adams. Gregg Williams was the MVP this past season with his ability to innovate and accommodate his scheme to his personnel. Some might find this selection redundant with Adams already rostered, but I’m very intrigued by the thought of deploying both Adams and Simmons together in Williams’ defense. I’m sure he would be licking his chops at the idea of having two players of a similar skill set working in the same unit. A.J. Epenesa (Edge, Iowa) — OK, I’ve seen some mocks that have the Jets selecting Epenesa with the 11th pick, and I can’t say I’m thrilled. Don’t get me wrong. I love Epenesa as a prospect, and while Epenesa will fill a need at the edge, he’s not exactly the player I would choose for this New York Jets team. Let me explain. Epenesa is a solid all-around edge rusher who possesses the flexibility to play defensive end in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. However, I would rather the Jets target an edge prospect like Yetur Gross-Matos, who can be utilized as an OLB in a 3-4 or a DE in a 4-3. The Jets don’t need to pick another 3-4 defensive end in the first round; we’ve seen that movie before, and we never quite liked the ending. Nonetheless, if the Jets draft Epenesa with the intention of going back to a 4-3 base defense, then I’m all for making the selection, primarily if Joe D. addresses some major needs via free agency. If that’s the case, then in the Gregg Williams I trust, and I’ll welcome the pick. Epenesa isn’t the most athletic candidate, but he makes up for it with a relentless motor and a tenacity you’d like to see from all your players. He’s passionate about the game and uses his physicals skills to dominate in the run game. Epenesa’s a skilled pass rusher with good bend, nice hands, and a nasty nasty (I had to put two in there) bull rush. He’s clearly a top 20 prospect and will be snacking on QBs for years to come. ******** As much as we need a trade back, and as much as I'd like to trade back, if one of Wirfs, Lamb, Thomas or Jeudy are there, I think we have to take him; if not, if we can trade back and get Higgins or some other OL, great. At this point, I'd be shocked if Becton rises that high, but if he is truly rated that highly heading into the draft by the Jets, other teams and the media, then I wouldn't have a problem with taking him at 11. Unless they're planning a switch to a 4-3 D full time, I hope that they aren't even considering Epenesa, and even then, I would be upset because enough 1st round picks have been used on D over the last 12 years to last 2 decades. Enough it enough. This draft should be about offense. I love Simmons, but the same thing goes. Let some other team enjoy what he can do. I wouldn't be very happy with Ruggs, either.
