With those choices, I'd probably take them in that exact order: Wirfs, Lamb, Wills, but would be equally happy (perhaps even moreso) with Lamb, Wirfs, Wills
Im a huge Lamb fan. I think he's the top WR in this group. That said if either of those 2 fall I would be hard pressed not to trade back. Especially to a wr needy team like Oakland. The extra picks could help a lit and being still in range for a top lt and top wr prospect in Adams and Higgins woild be worth more IMO.
.^ This. . Protection. . It's why people put locks on doors. You build from the ball outward. No OL with great WRs? .. Eventually your QB's going down and with it your season. . . Great OL with so-so WRs? .At least you get a running attack to work play action off of and improve your passing attack in the process.
I think we need both... IMO the first 3-4 pick should be offense... this draft is deep at oline and wr. As long as we get good players doesn't matter to me if we address wr or oline first. Those first 4 need at least 3 day 1 starters.
Great WR w so-so OL? At least you can execute a quick passing game & spread a defense out to lessen load on OL & make reads on QB easier. Its all relative. Is starting w the OL ideal? Yes.Is it the be all end all? Im sorry..i dont care if im on an island..”building inside out” & thinking trenches are the only thing that matters is extremely flawed. Do people that easily forget the late 90s/2000s when we had a great OL but skilll held us back? And skill is even MORE important now!! i’d like to see a high octane offense sometime before i die..but everytime that opportunity presents itself the fans want OL & the team takes D.
"Only thing that matters" and "extremely flawed?" I didn't say "only thing" so much as I maintained it as a "foundation." And yes, the foundation on either side of the ball begins at the LOS. As for the "'extremely' flawed" comment, .*smirk*. let's get over ourselves already... .
I happen to agree with him. Both wr group and o line are equally important... for instance... I think Oakland has a top 5 o line, great run game, and a good TE.... but no wr1, and good wr2, and a rookie slot wr... the offense wasn't that good. Carr can and has played at a high level before.
Your opinion? Of course, no problem. The "extremely" modifier however was (and is) b.s. and thus the 'smirk' that apparently has you so bothered.
It’s not BS. Because if it wasnt the jets would be a dominant team bc up until recently the only thing theyve scouted well is OL/DL.and yet every single year jet fans continue preaching this “draft OL it all starts up front” year after year after year.. in 09-10 we had one of the best OLs of this millenium & peoplle STILL wanted to draft OL.Its positively mindless. Its a game of balance.
In a season where 3 (Oakland, Dallas, Pittsburgh) of the top 5 o lines didn't make it to the playoffs I'm not so sure a great o line is some end all be all... we need a good o line, good wr group, good run game (committee or otherwise), good TE group, and a good defense. Its a team game. The whole team.
"Top 5?" Hardly. I think Oakland's OL is big and imposing...on paper. They certainly sucked against the Jets. Oakland itself? Playoff? Just like Cleveland: big plans, big press, that went south only in Cleveland's case the Hollywood pre-season hype was shot down quicker because they had an even bigger problem with their OL. Speaking of Cleveland, recall the Monday Night Game? Recall that asshole Myles Garrett repeatedly head-hunting Trevor Siemian (and not getting called for it?) and knocking him out of the picture? Well don't look now but that could very well have been Sam Darnold - good bye season. Granted there are many at TGG who didn't like Darnold from day one (i.e. the majority of which in a poll wanted Josh Rosen) and still don't like or trust him to this day but the point is, you have no OL, you will eventually pay the price. Today's NFL: protect your most important position while trying to kill theirs. Pittsburgh? You make my point: no QB, no season. Dallas? And why their coach should be fired
Thats my point you are making. We can draft all oline, sign the best FA oline whatever. End of the day you need the whole team. Coach. WR, QB, everyone. Not just an o line or any of that. Its a team game. On paper we could be stacked at o line. Hell they could even play well, which all 3 of those o lines did. But without WR and TE and QB and the rest its pointless... you need a whole team, top to bottom, to be a contender consistently.
Its about building a unit not just throwing a bunch of high picks at the problem. Its extremely hard near impossible to build a flawless perfect OL. Too many(no one in this discussion) dont care who we draft or what their actual skillset is as long as they are OL.And theyll be the first people to complain when it takes time for the front 5 to gel/draft picks to develop. And then what happens? Next draft season theyll be screaming for guess what? More OL!!!
There arw a few oline I wpuld consider at our spot. But there are WR I would consider. I honeslty also like Okubah, I don't think I would draft him due to his trade value and Oakland right behind us needing a cb1. But it would be hard to pass on him. I cpild say the same for Lamb. Thing is we have a ton of holes. All need filled in some way. To pass on a great player is tough. But the point is you keep all options open. This draft is REALLy deep at o line. Don't reach for them.
Your point? Exactly what point? Again you two: where did I say the OL is the be all and end all? Read sloowly: OL's a foundation, not the "only thing" but the foundation. Don't put words in my mouth. . Oakland's OL is a bloated paper tiger - hell the Jets overpaid for one of them this year (Osemele) and they've gone from sexy pre-season pick to nowhere. You are what your record is and Oakland with their supposedly "top 5" OL (not) and hotshot young RB Josh Jacobs is going nowhere (outside of Vegas). Cleveland, an even bigger pre-season sexy pick what with all their sexy skill positions (Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Nick Chubb, David Njoku, etc.) except oops!.......the ESPN ball-washers forgot to mention that they had no OL to speak of and after pissing on the Jets earlier this season they're now picking ahead of the Jets? . With all that "better-than-the-Jets" talent? ..
I didn't go into to the season with high expectations for the Jets, or Cleveland, or even Oakland. Even if the jets weren't talent deprived I think Gase is a bad coach and will cost us games. I have no faith in him. Cleveland reminded me to much of the Philly team with Asomuah and all those high priced players. Kitchens is bad. The oline is bad. Some good or even great players but a bad organization (maybe worse than us?) Oakland I had more faith in as they do have talent and Gruden. That said I also knew they had a lot of rookies that would need to step up. Then you add one of there most talented rookies going down before the season and the Antonio Brown drama. They were a fringe wildcard at best. My point with everything was we need to go - BPA at a position of need with a focus on offense but also consider trading back for more picks every chance we can and absolutely not over reach for players we think are 5 or so + spots behind us
Our OL has been criminally neglected, even with Brick and Mangold retiring. Maccagnan used 1 pick before round 5 on an OL. We need at least 3 new starters next season, maybe more. My guess is Douglas signs 2 FA's and drafts 2. @KurtTheJetsFan You are right, it's about balance. The OL and skill positions haven't been given the attention they deserve. It's been so out of whack that we need to spend at least 2 offseasons to build up the offense(OL and skill positions). We need a few above average skill players who are homegrown, which serves 2 purposes. One, they are cheap for the first 4 years and two, they can play at a high level for 5-10 years instead of the FA signing who is likely close to declining. We had 2 seasons of Marshall, 3 with Decker, and who knows how much longer Bell will be with us.
