I prefer to fire Gase if Greg Williams is the choice of HC, who looks like the reason the Browns had a strong finish last season, but firing Gase for anyone else means Williams is gone because you have to let the new head coach pick his staff. Williams is the real deal, though, so if that means Gase gets another year to figure it out so be it.
I wish I could share your optimism! I'm a little more optimistic than I was yesterday or 3 weeks ago, so maybe with a great offseason I'll be more optimistic by the time OTAs begin. I know I'd love to be proven wrong and for Gase to succeed. I just have little reason to believe that he will.
Gase didn't have to start Kalil immediately. Harrison had OTAs and most of TC with the starters. Kalil wasn't in shape or in football shape and didn't know the offense. Gase could have stuck with Harrison for a few weeks until Kalil was in shape and knew the offense. If Harrison was playing/practicing well, he could have stuck with Harrison or started working Kalil into the lineup. He didn't. Also, the blocking schemes could have been adjusted. Remember how topflight pass rushers were left unblocked in the first few games? Either the players on the OL didn't know the blocking scheme or couldn't execute it. I find it hard to believe that Gase couldn't have done something there to get a better result. Those are two ways in which Gase has to share the blame for the OL play. There may be others.
If that's true, then we're in a lot more trouble than we thought! That means almost the entire offensive unit has to be turned over.
I hear ya. I hated the Gase hire when it was first announced. Then after reading some things about some of his moves and things that were happening with the Jets, I felt hopeful and was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. For most of the season I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I now think he's a bad HC and bad OC and probably won't change, but he has to get next year for several reasons. One, he helped convince CJ to get rid of Mac and hire Douglas. That alone should give him a 2nd year. Two, he was at an extreme disadvantage with the shitty OL Mac put together and all the injuries. Three, keeping the players playing hard and going from 1-7 to 7-9 (finishing 6-2). Four, firing a HC after one year makes a team look bad. Five, we don't want to make Sam have to learn 3 different offenses in 3 years. Six, we don't want to piss off Douglas since he's a friend of Gase's. It's sad that half the reasons for not firing Gase have less to do with the job/positive things Gase did than optics for the team or other factors.
I'll agree that the OL is seemingly the major problem with the offense. It certainly needs fixing. But if those complaining about the play calling and Gase's failure to make adjustments are correct, the OL may turn out to have not been the major problem, only part of the problem. If Douglas is able to fix the OL or at least give it a major overhaul, we should see one way or another next season how much, if any, of a problem Gase's play calling and lack of adjustments are or if they go away with the bad OL.
Offseason is one day old and Gase is already causing problems. Get rid of this fucking loser PLEASE before he alienates more of our best players
I know some have an agenda, but let's be serious, it's the freaking media. BTW Gross, I just referenced a Cimini tweet.
of course, but Manish floated the bait and Gase was too fucking stupid to not bite. It was such an easy solution: don’t be a dickhead because you’re mad and have an ego. As always with Gase, it creates more problems.
Too early to tell, so you keep him I think we're in a lot better shape coming off a injury decimated season compared to the inept Bowles years. Bowles goes 2-14 with this team. Gase went 7-9
I think bowles goes 6-10 maybe more. We were given the pittsburg and last bills win... plus Sam played the best football of his career under Jeremy Bates the last 4 games last year. Our offense hasn't really improved.. our defense has a lot but this schedule was weak.
Well, we need : 4-5 o linemen 2 wide receivers At least 1 rb So yea. We need a lot. Not sure why anyone would think we don’t. The offense has been neglected for too long. A coach wasn’t going to come in and make 10 years of bad drafting go away in 6 months of practice.
Its really not that hard to just NOT say super dumb stuff. Just give a politically correct answer and move on. But Gase is a socially inept idiot, so there ya go.
I think Bowles goes more like 6-10 with this team. And the only reason we do worse is because of no Gregg Williams. Williams running the defense and Jeremy Bates running the offense may have actually been better than Gase.
People forget how terrible Bowles really was. He was next to Kotite the worst coach in Jets history. The team was always miserable off the field and fractured in the locker room. This team was more crippled injury wise and had to deal with far more adversity than any Bowles year. No way do they beat Dallas, Oak, Pitt, or even Buffalo yesterday under Bowles. They probably lose to Miami at home too I'm still not sold on Gase, but he is a legit NFL coach. Is he a good, bad, or average one? Well I'm fairly certain that you can't classify him as bad. But he's probably no worse than average. He got more out of this squad than Bowles would. And wasn't Gregg Williams somebody that Gase wanted? He needs some credit for that
