I disagree. The next HC doesn't need to know anything about business.. just about football and coaching football. Douglas is still the GM and most of us still have hope for him. Let Douglas GM and the HC coach... our problem has been our GMs haven't been able to pick their own coach and have the same vision, and our GM have not been good GMs... we need a good GM and HC that are on the same page.

2021 go (10-6) miss the playoffs via tiebreaker. Gase returns in 2022, has an off year due to so many injuries again, so brought back for 2023. Goes (5-11) and is finally fired. 2024 should be fun though!

Sounds about right but only way we go 10-6 is if we get another weak schedule. But that I could see... isn't being a jets fan so glorious.

Probably the most likely result. There are very few shortcuts available in the NFL these days and none of them involve free agency because the only positions that could make that kind of difference, QB and elite pass rusher, never reach free agency if they are good enough to make that kind of difference.

The few notable shortcuts in NFL history have mostly been a combination of bizarre circumstance and blind luck.

The Dallas Cowboys have the 1 pick and take Troy Aikman, then trade Herschel Walker for a draft and a half worth of picks, then free agency comes along just in time for them to snag Deion Sanders, the NFL's best CB, in the short interval before the NFL fully understands free agency.

The Eagles let Reggie White get away in free agency because free agency is young and nobody understands it well - the Packers become a great team overnight (with the help of a guy named Bret Favre.) Oh, and Reggie White is as good at 34-37 as he was at 24-27 (*shakes head*)

The Chargers draft Philip Rivers and let Drew Brees go in free agency. He recovers fully from the torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and becomes the most prolific QB in NFL history. The Saints become great until they have to pay him at market prices.

It just doesn't happen that often via free agency and you cannot force it, it has to happen naturally (preternaturally?) The world is full of Dan Snyder shortcuts and none of them have worked. Ever.

Would you give big money to Yannick Ngakoue if he hits the open market? He's a 24 year old pass rusher who's entering his prime. If he's not a superstar, he's not far below being one.

And, my point was Gase might get a bigger leash than he deserves. Given that many here never wanted him in the first place, he won't get the benefit of the doubt a first time HC or a more proven one would get.

Contrary to the meme that we "impatient fans" are just looking for short cuts and quick fixes, what I want is simple competency, both in the F.O., coaching, and of course ownership (this last one is impossible as long as the Johnsons are the owners however). Basic competency would have delivered playoff appearances, if not SB appearances by now. Basic competency would've meant the difference in winning 2 or 3 more games this season, and still be in the hunt. For all the talk about whether good teams are built by FA or the draft or both, GM decisions and coaching make a bigger, more consistent difference. Yes, "players win games", but who decides WHICH players, and what schemes and plays to use? If there is a "shortcut" I'm seeking, it's replacing the HC who has demonstrated no record of winning across 4 seasons with two teams.

Not the person you quoted, but I’d back up the Brinks for him.

This team should’ve had Khalil Mack but Mac dropped the ball. This team should’ve had ZaDarius Smith, but decided to go in on Anthony Barr who got cold feet (good move dude).

It’s time to get a damn edge rusher. Sign Ngakoue and draft Thomas/Wills/Wirfs with our first pick. Beef up the OL. Winning in the trenches makes every other position better.

I don't really care if the players like him. He made the Super Bowl with a bad quarterback. And he was beat by his brother (with a bad quarterback). He's a good coach. I wouldn't call his tenure at SF a "failure" at all - the team fell apart completely after he left. He might not be able to recruit well enough to win the National Championship, but that's irrelevant in the pros.

I disagree. We have Douglas, who is highly respected and has a great background and record of experience. Douglas should get to hire the next HC and that HC should report to Douglas. Period. We don't need some egomaniacal HC coming in here with complete control and running Douglas off. The Johnsons need to stay far, far away from any decisions other than perhaps rubber stamping contract amounts. IMO the next HC needs to know how to prepare and motivate the team, how to manage the game (timeouts, being aggressive, being able to make adjustments and actually making them), and have the wisdom to hire good coordinators who will adapt their systems to the talent we have at hand, and not try to force fit our players into their system stubbornly.

We have failed with HCs and GMs because our owners have been clueless idiots when it comes to football. They've made poor hires, meddled, and refused to hire a knowledgeable, experienced football man to run the team. We've failed because for the most part, they've hired HCs who were undisciplined, ran a country club, were unable to make adjustments, and plain just not that smart or innovative. Every single one of them has tried to force the players we've had into their system rather than adapting their system to our talent, or even using a different system. Williams is the first coordinator we've had that adapted/changed his system to fit our talent. We have failed because our clueless owners hired idiots for GMs who had little or no scouting and personnel experience or came from a team where their scouting/personnel decisions were less than stellar, and those idiots missed on more picks and traded away more picks than any other GM in the league, and we've had to try to win with little talent and too many FAs.

Idzik was not hamstrung, except that he had to keep Rex. Idzik (administration, and very little personnel work) was an idiotic hire, especially after Tanny (accountant/attorney). There were great GM candidates available too, but they wouldn't even interview with the Jets because the Johnsons stupidly insisted upon keeping Rex.

The only parts of your post with which I agree, are the two bolded sentences. They are part of the problem, but the biggest part is our idiot owners, their meddling, their dumb org chart, and their refusal to hire someone competent to run the football team.

Yes, I definitely would unless it prevented us from signing a couple of OL. If we can re-sign our own players that we want to keep and sign a couple of OL, and still fit Ngakoue under the cap, I'm all for it. With him, signing a CB in FA is less important/necessary.

Obviously wasn't written by Joe. He'd have to stop complaining about the Jets on Twitter for five minutes to write about a potential replacement for Gase.

I think if we got one mid grade guard, one mid grade cb, and Ngakoue, resign our own and some depth we could be fine. I still think we could move Edoga to guard and/or keep beachum. As long as we try as much as possible to fill our holes, especially on offense, i think we cpild jabe a good team. We need a new tackle, guard, and center. Probably 2 guards but we can't hope to do it all at once. I prefer drafting a tackle and in worst case have him play guard for a year, but i would much rather have a left tackle and say bye to beachum

I didn’t like that we were looking at Matt rhule but what he did with Baylor is remarkable. He’s a good coach and looking back with hindsight I wish we hired him

Spill all the digital ink you want about hypotheticals, but without Gase's removal, this team will be hard pressed to display any significant improvement. Beware of football owners who strive for perpetual mediocrity. This ownership group is about as intuitive as the box of rocks they're selling their fanbase. Maybe you can get away with this sub-standard product in some backwater two-star town where the Jets would be the only game in town, but in a highly competitive sports market like NYC, things can get a little dicey.

No wonder Belichick took a hike to Foxboro when he found out that Hess was selling the team. Almost like he knew the shit show that would ensue. For sure, the league would have never allowed Belichick to get away with all the morally repugnant stuff they have allowed the Pats to get away with. Does it really surprise anybody that the NFL promotes, advances and rewards liars, cheaters and those of questionable moral character?

No I wouldn't give big money to a 24 year old who was not one of the two or three best at his position in the NFL. I might not give big money to a guy who was in the top three depending on how the rest of the team looked at the time.

Even giving somebody like J.J. Watt a huge free agent deal at a young age isn't guaranteed to do anything but stretch the cap and make other players look at his deal as a goal to reach. Obviously that kind of player never sees free agency unless there are picks attached to signing him via franchise tag or something else is really wrong - like a serious injury or personal problems that threaten to cut their career short.

There are no shortcuts in the NFL unless you get lucky as hell. The Jets are one of the last franchises I'd bet on getting lucky as hell with a big signing.

I don't understand how people can't see where this shit show is headed...

At some point, likely next season, there is going to be a major blow-up with, Gase. His insecurities will eventually bring out his true character, he will likely lash out in some aggressive fashion with Christopher Johnson. Things will be downplayed in the most awkward of ways, then, Gase will be sent packing..

My thing is.. Why do we need to wait for this explosion? Why can we never have a functioning crystal ball that allows for some mythical fortune to grace this team?

The writing is on the wall. I've never hated (literally) another Jets HC more. Ever. I'm usually one of the last people to give up on a coaching staff. This is TOOOOOO fucking obvious.

I'm tired of being dragged along for this shitty ride that will literally end horrifically. It's a matter of when, not, IF.

    Fuck the Johnson's.

At least I have some meaningful college football to watch today.

There are paths that lead to success for the Jets with Gase, but I agree, it is much more likely that it will end in a dumpster fire. I actually like Gase more than I liked Mangini, Bowles and post-2011 Rex. I would be fine if he was the Jets OC, I just don't like him running the show.

The primary problem with Gase is that he's a technician not a leader. It's possible that this is just the perception based on his alone time on the sidelines but it is the perception at least.

Football is a tribal sport. If the HC is going to be a technician he's got to have things organized to keep the tribe strong on the sidelines while he's doing his thing.

Belichik has the Patriot Way and strong support from his coaching staff and veterans in keeping things going while he's trying to figure out what needs to change on both sides of the ball. It took him 3+ years to get that rolling without a hitch and he had outstanding coordinators in Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel when he finally got it clicking. The Pats were a disaster early on when Belichik was trying to fix everything on the fly and his coordinators were adjusting to the change from Parcells (all control all the time) to Belichik (went missing at times as he frantically tried to work something out that was plaguing the team.)

Technician in what way? His offenses have been trainwrecks for five years. I can hook up a cable box, that doesn’t make me a technician.
