Stability goes a long way. If I had to choice with 1 drive, I am still taking Darnold because the guy can make some unbelievable throws and can anticipate receivers getting open. Josh Allen still lacks that part of his game, going back to college. Allen still much improved.
I have to respectfully disagree, right now if I had to choose between the two with 1 drive to win the game, I would choose Allen, the league's leader in game winning drives
John Brown should get credit for just as many of those wins. He’s been unbelievable at getting open down the field.
I wish they were playing Sunday where it meant something. Last year in Buffalo it was a highly entertaining matchup between Allen & Darnold. Then of course week 1, although it sucked losing (one of Allen's game winning drives btw) was a good football game. We will probably see Matt Barkley at some point Sunday, ruining round 3
Sam hasn't been in a position to lead any game winning drives this year. The by the middle of the 4th quarter, Jets have either been out of the game, or leading the game. The Jets have only lost two1-score games this year -- to the Bills on opening day (two possible game winning drives, TOD with Sam throwing 4 straight incompletions, Bills punt, then Enunwa fumbles it away), and the Dolphins (Onside kick attempt fails with 19 seconds to play, no drive). In the second Miami game, he completed two big passes to get into Kickin' Ficken range for the win.
I just don't see it. I don't think Allen is that good at all. I think his defense makes him look better than he actually is Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
The dude will never be an accurate passer in the NFL. Once the Bills take the training wheels off him, they're in trouble. They're probably going to run Allen into the ground in the wild card round.
I'm curious, what measures are you looking at here. By all accounts they're fairly equal across the board as throwers. Sam throw's for more yards, with a higher completion percentage, and Allen throws less picks (although if you add fumbles and INTs, Darnold actually has less) They have the same TD%. (4.4%) They have virtually the same Y/A (SD-7.0 to JA-6.8) They have virtually the same quarterback rating rating (SD-85.1 JA-85.6) When adding in running, Josh Allen has the clear advantage, he also has the superior offensive line and head coach. Although the head coach is a bit more subjective. If you wanted to tell me that Josh Allen has had the better year I would probably agree with you. But the idea that Josh Allen is better by virtually every measure doesnt make all that much sense to me.
And Darnold is better in almost every advanced metric (EPA, CPOE, QB Efficiency, etc) out there with much worse talent and worse coaching.
Certainly. The point being, accumulating game winning drives isn't really a measure of a QB, however delightful a narrative it might produce. Mahomes, for example, is 1-for-2 in game winning drives this year (came back vs. Detroit, came up short against Tennessee). Would you take Allen over Mahomes, too?
It’s a terrible measure for determine if a QB is good or not. Not every QB has equal amount of opportunities for GWDs. Best measures are Y/A, EPA, CPOE, etc
Allen: More yards, more touchdowns, less interceptions, more wins, more game winning drives, better QB rating, head to head victory (if that matters to you), and of course more rushing yards that's "virtually every measure" I use to evaluate 2 QBs side by side.
of course not. Mahomes is better than Allen in virtually every measure you can use to evaluate a QB just like Allen is the same with Darnold. Game winning drives is only 1 measurement of many
Fair enough. I would certainly never tell you how you should evaluate QBs. I guess I just put a bit more value in the advanced statistics.
