yeah the QB makes a huge difference. for example this year in the 3 games without darnold (falk for 10 quarters, siemian for 2 quarters) they were sacked 18 times or 6 times per game on average in the 12 games with sam he was sacked 31 times or 2.58 sacks per game on average. just because of sam's awareness and pocket presence we let up half the amount of sacks we did before plus our o-line is even worse now due to injuries then it was weeks 2,3, and 5 when sam was out
Is this serious? Yes, QB awareness and mobility make a big difference, but, Wayne Hunter was "credited" with allowing 9 sacks (4th most of any OT in the NFL) and 13 knockdowns (22 combined sacks/knockdowns was most of any OT in 2011), and 28 QB hurries (most of any OT in 2011), and also lead all Jets with 11 penalties. 4 different DEs who lined up across from him were named Defensive Player of the Week. He was plenty terrible.
It would seem that for just about every NFL team the backup QB would get sacked twice as often as the starter, but I'm not going to spend hours compiling the stats.

If you look at a lot of Sanchezs sacks in 2011 the man was blocked fine until Sanchez blindly runs out of the pocket into him. There is no disputing Sanchez was one of the least pressured QBs in football in 2011 but took sacks at a higher rate per pressure than QB in the league at 24 percent. I can recall many sacks where the pocket was fine but Sanchez panicked and blindly ran into a defender that was blocked well. When you have a QB who panics and runs blindly it is hard for a blocker to know where to take his man. Hunter was not the problem Sanchez was.
Funny, when I look at a lot of Sanchez' sacks in 2011, I see a lot of dudes running past Wayne Hunter and smashing him before he even completes his drop back. Sanchez sucked, though-- I am not a Sanchez apologist. Nobody should be a Wayne Hunter apologist, except MAYBE his mother.
I am not advocating inducting Hunter into the hall of fame or the ring of honor just stating that with normal QB play half of the sacks against Hunter do not happen and he goes from looking like a nuclear wastepile to not completely terrible as he had a couple of really good games that year. I can recall a couple of sacks fairly vividly where Hunter blocked his man well and pushed him out of the play but Sanchez panicked for no reason and ran from a safe pocket right into Hunters man. Sanchez was the problem and the statistics and the eye test both bear it out.
Wayne Hunter was the slowest man off the snap I've ever seen. Instant retreat mode. He made Leonard Williams look like Aaron Donald out of his stance. Wayne Hunter single handedly ruined a season for us. Blaming any of Hunter's terrible blocking on Sanchez is irresponsible. Sanchez had ok pocket presence all things considered. He just could not for the life of him get a pre snap read. We had to line our fullback out wide on every single snap and motion him into the backfield to try to help him decipher man vs. zone into his third and fourth years.
Wayne Fucking Hunter. He got that moniker because he was really good, or really, really bad. Hmmmm…..
It is oh-so-Jetsian that people are debating whether an offensive lineman was truly awful, or adequate but hampered by a truly awful quarterback, eight seasons after he last played for the team.
That kicker should have never even come in for a tryout. He was awful and blew the first game all by himself. Plus Darnold kissing skanks and getting mono hurt too. It would have been a much different season. I hope Douglass drafting expertise is better than his free agent dumpster diving.
I don't know about that. Just because the Jets have had so many awful seasons. Lou Holtz is definitely #1 in my hatred and top things I hate regardless of football. When I see that ugly mug and hear his cartoon voice I shut the TV down immediately.
Just the fact that the win sent all those flag waving, yellow panty waste Pitt fans home with they're tails between they're steeley ass legs sure was very enjoyable - and that meant something
Sanchez did not have ok pocket presence. Maybe initially, his rookie year or something. Once the league knocked him around a little bit he was scared and broken in the pocket.
Eh I never thought he was that bad in the pocket. Maybe it seemed a lot better because he barely got sacked and hit his first couple years. I think he struggled more trying to figure out where to throw the ball than he was scared of getting hit and his internal clock was fucked because of it. Neither here nor there though. He was all around garbage.
You submit. I would love to take this team to court for every infraction they've ever committed against me. In fact, I'll sue. For GERD.
Have a hard time blaming the buffalo loss just on vedvik. Mosely injured his groin. Anderson roughed the passer on an unsuccessful buffalo 3rd and 10 which led to their first touchdown. Maye dropped an INT right in his hands. Probably more than that too.
