Don’t know if it’s the players or coaches but I’m really impressed we have a nice respectable defense this year. Not the 85 bears but it’s pleasant to see a bunch of no-names compete. even without the mouth of the south #33 today, we let up no TD’s Big “Probs” from a dark sider. Even Big Baby looked good before injury.
We are certainly set at defensive line (minus an edge), inside linebacker and safety. Even Blessuan Austin and Poole seem to be making the case to be 2 out of the 3 starters for next year. I would say that we are an edge rusher and a #1 corner and we from being a top 5 defense but that’s certainly easier said than done.
Too many surprises this year + tougher schedule next year = likely regression. Odds are we'll add a couple pieces but won't get to the next level.
I liked Rex Ryan's 'Band of lunatics', with his entire defense milling about the LOS until just b4 the snap. Offenses had no clue who was lining up where or where the pressure was coming from. Belichick had his NE squad do this exact same thing last night in the NE/KC game. It was crazy to watch. All 11 men just wandering back and forth while the Hahomes was trying to figure out what protections to call. LOL it worked better when Rex did it!
Michael Narnia stated some stats the other day in a podcast on our run defense. He said that our average yards per rush compared to the league average yards per rush is the best all time in the modern era. That is without Mosley and Williamson.
This says it all. Look at the injury report from the Miami game...most notably "Cornerback Kyron Brown left the building crutches". Who???? And then this: "The Jets patchwork starting secondary included cornerbacks Kyron Brown and Bless Austin. Darryl Roberts moved from corner to safety" All guys (except Roberts) we never heard of. Bless Austin is an oft injured late draft pick none of us thought would ever see the field. I guess "hats off" to Gregg Williams for finding a way to at least be 'respectable' with these no-names he got stuck with. I honestly dont think were making a run until 2021 at the earliest. Perhaps it will be a blessing in disguise that our record wont be great next year either for the draft pick and canning Gase. I don't think we are winning crap with him here. Seeing Rhule succeed this year and the fact we have spent $72 million on Trumaine Johnson, who is about to be cut, are prime examples that we haven't a clue what we are doing. Perhaps Douglas will fix the poor personnel decisions, but Gase can screw it up despite talent (see Leveon Bell).
Definitely impressed by how the defense has performed despite the injuries and encouraged by the play of so many younger players. As others have said, if they can resign Poole and Jenkins, and then acquire a legitimate starting CB and pass-rusher, this defense should be great. Have a feeling those rushing stats will take a notable hit on Thursday, but hopefully doesn't take away from the larger body of work this season.

That's great and all, but deceptive. As previous posters have said, other teams don't have to rely on running on us. They know they'll have lots of time for the QB to find open receivers. Also, with Mosley back next year, it should be even better. With that being the case, we don't need Williamson. He would be a luxury. If we trade or release him, we can save $6.5 million on the cap. With that we could sign a quality starting OG or CB, or maybe even an ILB who is better in pass coverage.
Remember 2003? The Jets were #2 in pass defense, #31 in rush defense.... Everyone on that team forgot how to tackle for a whole year. It was surreal.
