as far as our f...ing language is concerned....

part of the mystique and "privelidge" of playin in Giants stadium is the ever surprising EVENT STAFF yellow jacket guys.

At a JETS-redskins game a few years ago....a taunting skins fan several rows in front of us had an entire thing of nachos thrown at him... now im not sayin they guy shouldve had stuff thrown on him,, but the nacho cheeze and the container dripping off the side of his head was the most hilarious thing our entire row had ever seen. Guy wasnt injured.... our whole row is laughing and the guy starts yellin at us as though we threw the nachos.... along come the yellow jackets giving the JETS Fans that didnt throw anything a bag of shit as if we did it......

You would have to ask the NYJ tix office since the other stat came from them as well. However, I was one making the reverse commute from exit 117 GSP to Shea for every NYJ home game. Naturally I was thrilled when they moved across the river to the M/lands as my commute time went way down. You do realize this is now a most moot point with the NFL owners agreeing to give both us & the NYGs a 150M loan each to assist building the joint stadia

Is this true? You really saw that? Man, that's just pitiful. When I'm watching the Jets play, I'm not even thinking about fantasy.

Die-hard Jet fans live everywhere, and some could argue, the further away, the more loyal you are.

After commuting from Weehawken to E. Rutherford, I made things more difficult for myself by moving to Philadelphia 13 years ago.

I still come to most every game, despite adding almost 2 hours to my commute.

I wish the Jets had stayed in Queens, and I was hoping they'd go back to Queens, even though it would've made things even more difficult for me.

If you're a diehard fan, it doesn't matter how far away the team plays.

Let it be known since Beningo decided to go there; Joe Beningo has the filthiest mouth of all of the sports people that I have ever heard. I swear, this guy has to bite his tongue until it bleeds before he goes on the air, just to make sure that he does not go on an obscene laced diatribe!!

Reminds me of clown down here who beat the crap out of Jimmy Smith (on air) for getting caught snorting coke a couple of years back. The loser conveniently failed to mention that he smokes weed and drops acid on the regular in his private time! To me, these are just examples of media phonies. And there are a lot of those.

That used to be the case, I used to believe it.

Demographics have changed though, now just about as many Jets fans live in NJ as do Long Island.

You are right on the money with this one. A little history is in order here:

When the Jets started playing in Shea in 1964, NYC owned the stadium and the Mets were the prime tenants. That meant that the Jets in the late 60s and early 70s did not typically play a home game until baseball was over, often starting with 3 or 4 games on the road. In 1973, when the Mets played in the WS, the Jets lost a home game and played 8 road games and 6 home games. On top of that, the infield remained until October, the field was always a mess of swirling dirt and crappy grass. Shea was also a baseball stadium by design, which meant that during football season one end zone was by home plate and about 50% of the seats were in the end zone.

By the late 70's, Shea was a dump. It also was too small for football, barely holding 60,000 fans with few boxes. In the late 70s, Hess began asking NYC to build him a stadium after the Giants moved out of Yankee Stadium to the Meadowlands. NYC continually blew him off. In the early 80s Hess game the city an ultimatum - build me a stadium or I'll leave. Mayor Koch and NYC said no to Hess. With no choice, Hess then left for NJ. In those days, privately financed stadiums were unheard of.

Then came the WSS stadium situation. How do those empty railyards look now? It amazes me that NO could rally around the Superdome and their team, but NYC couldn't realize what an emotional and financial boost and boon to the city the WSS would have been. Instead, the city is stuck with Dolan, MSG, and empty prime real estate on the Hudson that will not get developed in our lifetime.

In the interim, the city decided to build a new tennis center (for two weeks a year of 20,000 a day crowds), and new stadiums for both baseball teams (with public funding for "infrastructure" equal to the amount required by the WSS). The Devils, Islanders and Nets are getting new arenas. It is only the Jets that get rejected over and over.

After the WSS was rejected, it was clear that the Giants were close to closing a deal for a new stadiuim in NJ. If Johnson did not jump in before the deal was closed, the Jets would have had four choices:

    1) Start from scratch with a new stadium plan for somewhere in the NYC area after NYC had rejected a Jet home for over 20 years- (when Queens was suggested at the last minute to save the Olympic bid, citizens groups immediately mobilzed to oppose it because it would take away Flushing Meadow Park). No self respecting person would go crawling back to a city under these circumstances.

    2) Get in on the new NJ stadiuim and share the stadium

    3) Continue as tenants in the new Giants stadium

    4) Move to another city that would want the Jets.

Be thankful options 3 and, particularly 4 were not chosen. Option 1 would have been a poor decision for a businessman when you consider the opportunity a shared stadium presented and the risks involved in starting from scratch with a new stadium.

The Jets did what was best for themselves and their fans.

    Nice post

    1) Start from scratch with a new stadium plan for somewhere in the NYC area

Isn't the current stadium in the "NYC Area"?

Option 2 was the way to go. debateable as it is, i won't think of the Jets as tennents in the new stadium. don't know why anyone else would?

I am aware of the loan. I was just wondering if the % of NJ resident season ticket holders moved over 50% (or maybe it always was) due to the fact that the stadium is in NJ. I have no dog in this fight. Sheldon Silver killed it.

Interesting responses. I myself would of liked the stadium in Queens or L.I. And Sheldon Silver is the guy who nixed the WSS correct?

And me being 19, i'm going to have some arrogance in my attitude. Although it's rough to be arrogant about the Jets:grin:. Anyway, it's just an attitude that I adapted to in terms of the trash talking I do for the Jets, Yankees, and Knicks. I get in countless heated arguments, but on Jets gameday it's alot worse. I'll get pretty rowdy, but hey, it's just how I am.

I am a "Jet" fan. They are no longer the NY Jets. NY only has 1 Team and it is the Bills.

Yeah I think by any measure of franchise loyalty the Jets have been as loyal to their fans as any professional franchise in any sport ever.

When you look at respected sports owners like Horace Stoneham and Art Modell who ditched their long-suffering and loyal fan bases for greener pastures and at sleazes like Al Davis, Walter O'Malley and Jim Irsay who exploited their way out of town despite favorable conditions you have to really admire the Jet's owners over the years for their loyalty to the community.

I wish Leon Hess's competence had matched his civic virtue, because the Jets would have won 5 Super Bowls in the last 30 years if it did.
