Not to be nit-picky, but i think what was truly overrated was the impact of a handful or star players. I didn't see many people over-rating the rest of our highly-suspect roster (maybe w the exception that some -- me included-- hoped Williams would get Trumaine to contribute more) KO: came with concerns; teams don't just give away Guards one year off of back to back pro bowls and we got him cheap. We now know why Mosley: has been hurt, but when healthy was better than advertised Leveon: i was not a fan of signing but have to admit he's better than advertised as far as attitude. He like Darnold are suffering from OL -- whether that's talent or coaching will be debated. Crowder has been good. So for the most part the stars have done as expected and what we're seeing is that the rest of our roster was crap and there's only so much the stars can do. You need a critical mass of talent, not a few stars Just like we should not overrate the roster, we should not overreact to the current situation. We just came off a brutal stretch schedule wise. It tests our fandom, just as it will test the unity in the Jets' lockeroom. We had/have several key injuries and significant but hopefully fixable concerns. Let's hope there's growth in the second half and absolutely make sure to keep Sam upright
Overrated g Williams for sure. I thought he could scheme the lack of corners but he hasn’t and his blitzes never get home, it’s like the last year of Rex when the whole league figured out his only pitch.
FYI ( some people did ) but I never over rated this roster. I thought they would be lucky to win 6 games. I knew Gase was a bad coach and posted it too many times to count. I said "where is the O line--> I wondered who was going to "protect Sam and open holes for Bell " - I thought Osemele was an over rated signing as the guy had been hurt 2 of 3 years. I questioned where the hell was the pass rush going to come from and who was our edge rusher even before the injuries it was NOT there. I said Trumaine Johnson would suck even with Greg Williams as his coach = Johnson is BADDDDDDDDD and our secondary is Badddddd. I could go on but there are already a lot of "I " EYES in this post and I don't want to come off as a selfish guy or a ME guy but I would much rather have eaten crow and been happy to do so instead = sadly I told you so.
If I was you I would check up on the last 10 years #1 draft choices of the NYJs was & where those players are today then explain to non dreamers on this board why the draft will improve us
We have to be one of the worst blitzing teams in the league, so many blitzers just run into the backs of our DL
and 1 4-12 vote and I was being generous Edit It seems I didn't vote in the poll but wrote it in the post section. Be an excuse for @Brook! to withhold the winnings lol
They don’t. The winners in March are rarely the winners in January. Bell and mosely were good signings but they couldn’t make up for the past 4 years of bad drafting. Free agency never can.
Right. And the teams with massive amounts of cap space are usually the teams that have that cap space because they haven't drafted any players good enough worth retaining on bigger deals. It's an endless cycle that always comes back to the draft. I'm glad we let Maccagnan make all the big off-season decisions before firing him two months later. It's perfect for the next GM and coaches vision.
I don't think we overrated the roster too much. We had some talent upgrades over last season, a season we were mostly competitive even in losses. We might have overrated Sams development. But the hard reality is that we wanted to believe in Gase - even those that were weary of the hire. We way overrated Gase and its easy to prove: We just lost to a winless team that was trying to tank - and it wasn't even that close of a game. Terrible game plan. Terrible motivation. Terrible leadership. Terrible coach.
I don’t know if we overrated the roster as much as we underrated how bad Adam Gase is. I don’t think many if any thought the Jets were a lock for playoffs. Those of us that thought there was a chance of playoffs(me) knew that in order for the Jets to make the playoffs Darnold had to take a giant leap and be elite AND the majority of question marks had to be answered positively. So provided that all the question marks came out negatively combined with Darnold not only not being elite but regressing after missing multiple games as well as Gase being terrible and it’s really not a surprise that the Jets are where they are.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pretty happy when we signed Bell. But I really didn't want him. I wanted Paradis more than anything. As much as we haven't had a game changer or true bell cow at running back, we've had good running games and fairly good production even out of the running back by committee approaches. Bilal Powell has been a big part of that because of his versatility in the passing game. Bell should be an amazing piece to have if we rebuild the line though.
It's common for fans to overrate their roster in the offseason. as we see with the browns though you can have a talented roster and still not win. On paper the brows were a playoff team but in reality they are picking top 10. all it takes is 1 weak link at a pivotal position or bad coaching or in their case both. In our case QB has been a weak link. sam was sick week 1 and wasn't himself. siemian lasted 2 quarters. falk is awful. sam came back and had 1 good game and has been bad since. It's the only game we won and we beat a pretty good team. If sam was playing better we wouldn't be 1-7. The other side is unforeseen injuries. KO would have been a big improvement but whether it was the injury or something else, he didn't perform and was cut over the injury scandel. mosely was a stud week 1 but got hurt and been out the whole year. avery was on IR before the season started. nobody could have predicted we'd lose 5 starting ILBs in 1 season. that has to be a record. our 3rd overall pick is injured and missed a month. O-line was a weak point which we all knew. we took a flyer on kalil and he's been awful. beechum wasn't great but got hurt so we have a RT playing LT. shell is having a bad year as is winters. They both have been solid starters for us in the past but now are below average starters. we also have bad coaching leading to poor mental mistakes. way too many free rushers when the other team doesn't even blitz. that's why you play the games. On paper the jets were a 7-9 win team, but in reality and with injuries and poor coaching we will pick top 5. We also couldn't predict herndon pulling a hammy and not playing the 1st half. we knew he was out 4 games but now it's 8 and counting. we couldn't predict enunwa would hurt his neck week 1 and be on IR. at the end of the day, it's not really our roster but mostly just bad coaching and injury bug. we don't have a playoff roster, but when healthy we have a roster that can compete with the right coaching.
You forgot that the they are averaging - are you ready - 12 pts per game. If it wasn't so sad, it would be dunny.
Meh, he’s on a good value deal considering what has been paid out to zeke and gurley. Bell is like the only player on this team that hasn’t been part of the overall problem. Sure it would be nice if he was a homegrown draft pick but that wouldn’t change his pay now so doesn’t matter. If osemele and Khalil had been successful here the bell signing would look great instead of just good.
